How bad is the BIG 12 North?

The Big XII tiebreaker rules are:

If three or more teams are tied, steps 1 through 7 will be followed until a determination is made. If only two teams remain tied after any step, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative.

 

1) The records of the three teams will be compared against each other;

2) The records of the three teams will be compared within their division;

3) The records of the three teams will be compared against the next highest placed teams in their division in order of finish - 4, 5 and 6;

4) The records of the three teams will be compared against all common conference opponents;

5) The highest ranked team in the first Bowl Championship Series Poll following the completion of Big 12 regular-season (intra-) conference play shall be the representative;

6) The team with the best overall winning percentage [excluding exempted games - e.g. 12th games such as Kickoff Classic, Pigskin Classic, Hawaii, etc.] shall be the representative;

7) The representative will be chosen by draw.

 

Rule #1 would not elimate anyone, as all would be 3-5. Rule #2 would be a case where it would be advantageous to NOT have Baylor on your schedule. In this scenario, the record of any North team this year against the South will be either 1-2 (with Baylor) or 0-3 (without Baylor). So the teams that have Baylor must have gone 2-3 in the North to get to 3-5, while the teams without Baylor went 3-2 in the North. Therefore, the teams that didn't have Baylor would have the better North division record and then the tiebreak would be between those teams. Those teams would be KU, KSU, and CU. KU would have the head-to-head tiebreaker over both KSU and CU, and would thus be the North champ.

 

Kansas would have a 5-6 record going into the BIG 12 Championship game. They would not qualify for a bowl as the North Champion with only 5 wins if they lose. If they won, Kansas would go to a BCS game with a 6-6 record as the BIG 12 Champion. :eek:

Yup ... OU plays Nebraska this weekend which will bring NU back to the pack. K-State plays Iowa State & Colorado which will bring them back. There could be a 4-way tie for the BIG 12 North at 4-4. :eek:

 

OU will most likely play Nebraska or K-State in the Championship game, they will have beaten both teams already this year.
