Pittsburg State vs. Northwest Missouri State

My alma mater, Pittsburg State University, is facing Northwest Missouri State tomorrow at Arrowhead Stadium. This is an NCAA Division II matchup. Both teams are 10-0. Pitt State is ranked #1 in the nation, and Northwest is #2.

 

Both schools have great tradition in NCAA Division II, and both have won national championships.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The anticipation for the Fall Classic III at Arrowhead has been building all season, as week after week Pittsburg State (10-0, 8-0 MIAA) and Northwest Missouri State (10-0, 8-0 MIAA) kept up their winning ways.

 

And here they are -- the Gorillas, winners of 10 in a row, ranked No. 1 in the American Football Coaches Association Division II poll and No. 2 in the NCAA Division II Southwest Region ranking and the Bearcats, winners of 13 straight games dating back to last season, No. 2 in the AFCA poll and No. 1 in the NCAA-II regional list.

 

The winner of the Saturday (Nov. 6) match-up receives the MIAA championship, a likely bye in the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs, and the rights to say they were the victor in the first D-II regular season finale to feature a pair of undefeated teams and the first regular season meeting between the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked squads in Division II history.

 

Of course, I'll be there with a group of my college friends. 72 degrees and sunny.

 

Pittsburg State (63.4 ppg) and Northwest (49.1 ppg) are 1-2 in the nation in scoring. The Gorillas are the No. 1 team in Division II total offense (654.2 ypg), while the Bearcats are ranked eighth (480.4 ypg).

 

Northwest also features the nation's No. 2 rushing defense (56.1 yapg), while Pitt State has allowed only 285.5 total yards per game -- just 99.7 of those on the ground.

 

This match-up also was set up by the upset of Texas A&M-Kingsville, which lost to Abilene Christian (Texas), 17-10, last week. The Javelinas were the No. 2 team in the AFCA poll last week and No. 1 in the regional ranking. Kingsville tumbled to third in the region and ninth in the nation.

 

More than 17,000 advanced tickets have been sold for the game, which in the previous two appearances at Arrowhead have drawn crowds of 26,695 and 20,324.
