Conference Rankings

There are two group ratings, the "central mean" and the

"simple average" (also known as the "arithmetic mean")

The "central mean" gives the most weight to the middle team(s)

in the group and progressively less weight to teams as you go

away from the middle in either direction, up or down.

This tends to smooth out the effect of anomalous teams that are rated

much higher and lower than the middle team(s) in the group. The

"simple average" ("arithmetic mean") weights each team equally

no matter where they are relative to the middle.

Isn't this the same system that had the Big 12 ranked highest last year. :D

LMFAO..........now that was almost as funny as this one.

:D

Sig line bet?......I'll take the Big 10 or SEC to have a better record than the Big 12 in the bowls?

I'll take the SEC to outperform the Big 12 or Pac 10 as well.

Hell , i'll even take the Big 10 and the SEC to outperform the Big 12 and Pac 10.

Any takers??

Come on Sarge, put your sig up for grabs!! With your confindence, this is like taking candy from a baby, right?

What is one positive thing to happen in the Big 10 this yr.  Just give one.  Mich St smacked Wisconsin in the mouth, opps, then they lose to Penn St.  Northwestern smacks OSU around, opps, Northwestern sucks.  Purude was decent, then they lose 3 straight.  Michigan backed into a BCS game, but they beat Iowa.  Really what is this sad sack conference done.  experts all over the country say they suck, this computer says they suck, and I say they suck.  Suck that, Cher. That is the truth.

Im done with you.  I will not respond to you again, PERIOD.  Why dont you do the same.  My guess is you can't and yo will continue to stalk me because you have no life, Iowa sux, and you sux.

Later Loser.

Sig bet that the Big 10 and SEC, BOTH ,have more teams in the top 25 than the Big 12 after the bowl season............EASY!!

After Texas and OU the BIG 12 is the WORST confernece in football BY A MILE!!!

The rest of those cupcakes would be LUCKY to win a game in the SEC or Big 10 or Pac 10 for that matter.

When both Texas and OU lose their bowl games, we will be left again with an over rated conference as we were last year..........AGREED??

The SEC and Pac 10 should both be 1 and 2, but how in the world the Big 12 is 2 is beyond me. They currently have 4 teams ranked in the top 25, two of which just lost this weekend (Okla St. and A&M) and will move outside the top 25, which will leave only TWO Big 12 teams even being ranked . The Pac 10 has THREE in the top 25, the SEC has FIVE!!! and the Big 10 has FOUR(after OSU moves in this week) Looks to me, the author of this poll has an agenda to have OU play USC......that's all. You only have to look to #3 to see how bias this poll is ACC #3 :D .

Sarge, how can you rate a conference based on how they play each other? True there was not one dominant team this year in the Big Ten. They beat each other up pretty good, and there were some streaky teams.

But the Big 10 teams were 24-10 in non-conference play. Let's investigate further.

Non-Conference Wins:

Miami (OH), San Diego State, Kent State, Iowa State, Central Florida, UNLV, Arizona, Kansas, Syracuse, Ball State, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Marshall, NC State, Central Michigan, Toledo, Illinois State, Colorado State, Akron, Central Florida, Florida A&M, Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Oregon

Non-Conference Losses:

Notre Dame, Arizona State, TCU, Arizona State, Hawaii, Rutgers, Notre Dame, Boston College, UCLA, Kentucky

The only BCS top 25 team played was Arizona State and the Big 10 lost both games (Northwestern & Iowa).

Record vs other conferences:

Notre Dame: 1-2

Big 12: 2-0 (Iowa State, Kansas)

Pac 10: 2-3 (Arizona, Oregon, Arizona State x2, UCLA)

ACC: 1-0 (NC State)

SEC: 0-1 (Kentucky)

Big East: 1-2 (Syracuse, Rutgers, Boston College)

So against Notre Dame & the other 5 BCS conferences the Big 10 went 7-8. Pretty average.

MAC: 11-0 (Miami OH, Kent State, Central Florida x2, Ball State, Marshall, Central Michigan x2, Toledo, Akron, Western Michigan)

Conference USA: 1-1 (Cincinnati, TCU)

Mountain West: 3-0 (San Diego State, Colorado State, UNLV)

WAC: 0-1 (Hawaii)

MEAC: 1-0 (Florida A&M)

Gateway: 1-0 (Illinois State)

That is 17-2 vs non BCS conference schools. I think you could say the Big 10 dominated these schools. As expected.

In summary, the only positive thing I see from this entire analysis is that the Big 10 went 2-0 against the Big 12 this year.

Well we'll see what happens in the bowls. Iowa made the Capital One Bowl. I'm *** proud of it too. 9-2, Big Ten Champions, and are going to the Biggest Bowl of the Non BCS bowls. Considering only 8 teams get to go to the Bowl Championship Series, I'd say that is a very good accomplishment. As for Michigan backing in, yeah they backed in, the same way Oklahoma backed into the NC Title game last year. At least Michigan actually won their conference, unlike Oklahoma last year. Michigan took care of business, and Oklahoma didn't. Oklahoma is gonna go to the NC game this year and get shredded, and we're all gonna sit here and laugh because SARGE WAS WRONG AGAIN. You bring nothing to this board, other than your wrong predictions, so do us all a favor and YOU get a life. If you say the Big 10 is weak, then you're saying the Big 12 is weak as well. Bowl games is where it's at, because you get 2 to 3 weeks to prepare, and should be on your game. And for you to say Iowa sucks, is just bs. I'd LOVE to see Oklahoma go 9-2 with there top 4 running Backs on the depth chart all out for the season, after losing the outland trophy winner, an all american safety, there all american kicker, and starting their 3rd qb in as many years. Big Ten is very young this year. So despite having a down year, we still have an excellent shot at proving morons like you wrong in the bowl games, and then we sit back and laugh at Oklahoma getting shredded in the NC game by USC.

You big 10 Oprahers are hanging your hat on beatin Iowa St and Kansas vs the big 12. ... ... You are really telling me because so called Iowa beat a 5 loss Iowa St, by 7 at home,  or NorthWestern beat a 4 win Kansas team by 3 at home, the Big 10 is superior to the Big 12.  That is the most idiotic thing I have ever heard.

583447

No Sarge I wasn't telling you that the Big 10 was superior this year. Maybe my post was too long and had too many facts and you got bored and quit reading, but I promise I said nothing of the sort.

Oklahoma & Texas in the Big 12 have definitely played better this season than any Big 10 team. However the Big 10 has 7 (possibly 8 if MSU beats Hawaii) bowl-eligible teams where the Big 12 has 7, so the depth of the conference is comparable. But the Big 12 is stronger on top and, barring a repeat of last year, will have a team in the title game.

But going 2-0 against Big 12 teams does qualify as one positive thing like you asked for in your post.

And having a winning bowl record will be another.

I'll have to agree with Sarge here and say the Big10 is down this year. Take their two or 3 best teams vs. the best 2 or 3 from the Pac10, Big12, ACC and SEC, and they would not do well.

They're still much better than the BigEast, but still, not a good year overall. IMHO, no doubt about it....

Sarge,

rankings, quality wins, and how teams look

What's a quality win? Let's call it a non-conference win over a BCS ranked team. The Big 10 has none. The Big 12 has one (Nebraska over #23 Pittsburgh). So the advantage, however minor, goes to the Big 12 as neither conference really played a difficult non-conference schedule.

Rankings, I have certainly conceded that the Big 12 has the stronger teams at the top of the BCS rankings with Oklahoma & Texas. But the Big 10 has 3 top-20 teams and 4 top-25. The Big 12 has 3 top-20 and 4 top-25. So the depth of the conference is similar (but the Big 12 is stronger on top).

How teams look on the field ... that is very subjective and nearly impossible to measure so I will just say that it's pointless to argue how teams look on the field, and I won't.

As far as 7-8 vs BCS conference teams (plus ND) being average, in any set of games half the teams win and half the teams lose, so a .500 record would be, by definition, average.

The Big 12 is 6-2 with wins over Clemson, Washington State, Pittsburgh, Oregon, Arkansas, and UCLA and losses to Iowa and Northwestern. I would certainly call this above average.

The Pac 10 is 5-8 with wins over Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Iowa, and Illinois and losses to LSU, Oklahoma State, Indiana, Oklahoma, Colorado, Notre Dame x2, and Wisconsin. Probably slightly below average.

The SEC is 4-4 with wins over Georgia Tech, Florida State, Indiana, and Oregon State and losses to Notre Dame, Rutgers and Texas, Clemson. Probaly about average.

The Big East is 7-8 with wins over Penn State, Notre Dame x2, Maryland, Duke, Michigan State, Vanderbilt and losses to Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Nebraska, Purdue, Virginia x2, Florida State, Maryland. Another average result.

The ACC is 8-6 with wins West Virginia, Syracuse, Temple x2, Syracuse, Connecticuit, South Carolina, Boston College over and losses to USC, Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, West Virginia, and Connecticuit. Slightly above average.

That leaves Notre Dame at 5-4 vs BCS schools with wins over Michigan, Michigan State, Washington, Stanford, and Tennessee, and losses to Purdue, Boston College, Pittsburgh, and USC.

It looks like I miscounted a game because the wins and losses don't quite match, but in summary, for one conference to go 7-8 against the other BCS schools seems to be pretty average.

The way I rate a conference ........... how teams look on the field.

What a lying sack of shiat!

This statement goes well with all the other bull*** you speak.

...........if that's the case you would have said OU sucked last year :D

...and i don't recall you saying that, now did i?

I think some are putting all their eggs in the Bowl games, when clearly that doesnt make the season a success for most of those teams.

This must be your new philosophy :D

Beat up weakass teams, cry wolf, foul and unfair when you get beat in a REAL contest :D

...........i see your already preparing yourself for another loss this bowl season.

It's okay, you'll be the only one surprised and disappointed, as the rest of us know, OU should not have been there last year or this and it'll be proven AGAIN on the field !!

LMMFAO,  Before the Big 12 Championship game, Some Writers were tossing around if last yrs Sooner team was the best of all time, puttin 50 pts on 7 bowl teams.  Ou destroyed folks last yr. 3 top 25 teams by 35+ pts.  Then it all fell apart.  The lack of running game reared its ugly head, and an injured White couldnt get it done in the national title game, no excuse LSU was exceptional last yr.  The Big 12 Championship game was a total aberation.  OU stoned every running back it faced last yr, but Sproles in that game.

I wont have a single excuse if OU loses to USC,  as I gave LSU props last yr.  Whites injury most certainly was a reason for the offensive stuggles, but LSU had a great defense as well.  Im just curious what the excuses will be if Im right and OU whips USC, from the haters all yr.  Will I hear, *** I am stupid,  OU is the best team in the country.  Somehow I doubt it.

Sarge, I'm not the one talking up the Big Ten. Get that through your thick skull, and into that minature brain of yours. YOU'RE the one calling the Big Ten weak. I've said, that you can't call it weak until the season is over, and after the Bowl games. You also said the Big Ten was weak the last 3 years. It's simply untrue, OR you're saying the Big 12 is weak. Your own research proved that. And if you look at the pay out and the teams participating, YES the Capital One Bowl is the highest bowl of hte non BCS bowls. Big Ten #2 vs SEC #2. The Cotton Bowl gets the SEC #3 vs Big 12 #2. They are pretty equal, but in terms of pay out it is greater, which lets face it, thats all these schools really care about. Yeah teh Big 12 has 2 teams in the top 5, a very good accomplishment, but when both of them lose their bowl games, to supposedly "weaker" competition, that shows me that they were over ranked and over hyped. Just like last year, when Oklahoma backed into the NC game, and Kansas State, the team that Oklahoma didn't even deserve to share hte same field with, got beat by the Big Tens second place team. Not to mention Texas lost to an average Washington State team. Those are the results. Full body of work, and until the Big 12 starts winning some meaningful bowl games (not texas tech over navy) they will be just that conference that "looks good on paper" every year. I've said before and I'll say it again, judge conferences after the bowl games, and look at the full body of work. And I say, if Texas and Oklahoma both lose (which i suspect they both will) then the Big 12 didn't deserve to have 2 teams in the top 5. I'm not touting the Big Ten, I'm simply pointing out the facts, and yeah if the Big Ten falls on their face in the bowl games, then, and only then will I say it's a weak conference. If they are successful, then they would have beaten some very impressive teams. Same with any other conference who does well.

In my eyes, if OU wins the NC, the Big 12 is the stronger conference. If OU loses, the Big 12 is still stronger than the Big 10. End of story. The only way to fairly assess one conference versus another is if the Big 10 and Big 12 suddenly became the Big 23. (You know 10 + 12 = 23)

This coming from a lifelong Michigan fan. However, I hate the rest of the Big Ten with a passion. I almost enjoy seeing the other Big Ten teams lose as much as see Michigan win.

That's flawed logic; are you about to tell us that the WAC was the strongest conference when BYU won the title, or that the Big East was worth a crap when Miami was winning titles in the day?

Who wins the national title definitely holds sway in the argument, but it's not the be-all, end-all; heck, gimme Iowa vs the Big 12 North champion (which it could be argued is the 2nd best team in the Big 12 - after all, if the South teams are so good, why aren't they in the title game? :D ) any day of the week.

586576

Speaking of flawed logic...

I hate to nitpick but here goes anyway.

BYU is an awful example. Because of conferences being locked into bowls back in the day, they beat a 6-5 Michigan team(clearly not #1 in the country) in the Holiday Bowl and ended up the only undefeated team in the nation. Therefore, it would be ridiculous to suggest the WAC was the best conference and this comparison holds no water in the BCS era.

As for Miami and the Big East being "worth a crap"...

When the Canes won their NCs while in that conference(91 & 01) the Big East went 6-1 overall in Bowl games with wins over teams from the ACC, SEC, Big 12 and Big 10. According to the "logic" on this board that makes them pretty darn good.

Now, I'm sure there are better examples out there somewhere to support your argument but in this particular case I had nothing better to do so there you have it.
