The University of Florida has offered its coaching job to Urban Meyer, who accepted today, ESPN.com's Pat Forde has learned.

Florida papers reported the offer to Meyer, who has coached Utah to a 12-0 season and a BCS bowl bid, on their Web sites Friday morning.

"It could be any minute," UF president Dr. Bernie Machen told The Palm Beach Post earlier today. "I'm waiting for an e-mail."

When asked about the report, Utah athletic director Chris Hill, deferred.

"My position is to let the other parties in these things -- the schools and the coach -- speak for themselves," Hill said. "Any kind of confirmation would have to come from other sources."

When pressed, Hill offered no further comment.

Meyer met with his players Thursday and told them what schools are pursuing him, but he would not be specific when asked about the meeting.

"There's too many things involved right now to have any comments," Meyer said after a practice at Utah's new indoor practice field.

Florida officials were in Utah on Thursday, as were Notre Dame officials.

Meyer will replace Ron Zook, who was fired but coached the team through the end of the season.

The Utah coach has said he wants to coach the Utes in their bowl game. Zook has not yet decided whether he will coach the Gators in the Peach Bowl.

Utah is expected to consider offensive coordinator Mike Sanford and defensive coordinator Kyle Whittingham to replace Meyer.

Utah's Urban Meyer agreed Friday afternoon to become Florida's 21st head football coach, sources told The Sun.

Meyer, 40, agreed to a seven-year, $14 million contract, which was finalized Friday.

UF athletic director Jeremy Foley has been in Salt Lake City meeting with Meyer since Wednesday. Meyer also met with Notre Dame officials on Thursday.

Meyer turned down his "dream job," a chance to coach at Notre Dame. Meyer was the wide receivers coach for the Irish for five years (1996-2000) and many thought he would accept Notre Dame's offer, which was made Thursday.

As of late Friday, UF still had not scheduled a press conference to introduce Meyer. Foley is returning to Gainesville on Friday.

Meyer has a strong connection to Florida — new school president Bernie Machen, who hired Meyer when Machen was the president at Utah. The two have stayed in contact since Machen left Salt Lake City for Gainesville last January.

Meyer is widely considered the hottest young coaching prospect in college football. In his two years at Utah, he's taken a downtrodden program and taken it to heights the school had never achieved before. The No. 5 Utes are 11-0 this season and will be playing in a BCS Bowl. His overall record at Utah is 21-2.

Before taking the Utah job, Meyer was 17-6 in two seasons at Bowling Green, where his spread offense was one of the most productive in the nation

I wonder if ND would consider Dan Hawkins from Boise State? I know he has stated that that would be his dream job, just as everyone else has said. Lets see, they have hard time recruiting top athletes because of the academic requirements, they don't pay very well, and you are constantly uder the microscope, not to mention that now ND has a quick hook. Why not?

ND has very big problems, and the potential coaches know it. Thier football program is almost run like a mikitary acadamy, and thier academic standards are too high for more than half of the highly recruited high school players. There was a time when every Irish Catholic kid in the country would die just to play for ND. No more.

These highly recruited kids want to go pro, and ND has stopped producing them. Miami is a much better place to go than ND for that purpose, and you don't have to feel like you are at Annapolis while you're in school. Unless the powers that be at ND decide to change thier whole system, and not just a coach, they will continue this downward slide and end up like the Ivy league schools did.

From what I heard, ND low balled him since they thought they already had him. Florida offered him almost 40% more. When you weigh your dream job vs. dream salary. Ha Ha ND. They fire a great coach to get one guy and don't get him. What's the big deal about a this coach anyway? He has 4 years as a head coach.
