My alma mater, Pittsburg State University, has advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship game with a 31-19 win over North Dakota.

Game will be live on ESPN next Saturday at 4:00 EST.

Pitt State is the highest scoring offense in NCAA history -- all divisions. They average 59 points per game, though that average will drop a little after today.

:bigshock: Shows what I know about Div II (or Div I for that matter) ... What the heck is it doing over there? I guess that kind of explains your Chiefs flag now that I think about it :D

Okay, I'm a doofus. :doah: :D Why doesn't it call itself Pittsburgh of Kansas like Miami of Ohio to protect the geographically impaired?

The area was a big coal mining area back in the old days. The name Pittsburg was drawn from the coal mining areas of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In that area of southeastern Kansas, they did strip mining for the coal, and left big strip pits behind. These pits still exist around the area, and actually are now filled with water and provide great fishing.

I'm really not sure why they dropped the h at the end; my guess is they wanted some distinction for their town.

By the way, the mascot for Pittsburg State University is the Gorilla, the only one of it's kind among universities.

The school has a long tradition of football powerhouses, and won the national championship in 1991. I was there at the time, and it was awesome.

Gregg Easterbrook at NFL.com has been bemoaning Pitt State for much of the year - not that they aren't good, but they go out of their way to run up the score (passing in the 4th quarter when up by 40 points, for example).

The football gods must be asleep at the switch, such blatantly poor sportsmanship is in need of smiting.

And forget the Gorillas; best college mascot is the UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs.

With all due respect, this team averages 373 yards per game ON THE GROUND. So they run the ball. A lot. This team historically has always been a running team, and critics have pointed out that come playoff time, they are one dimensional. They have passed more this year to HELP them come playoff time, and it has really proven true this year. This team also plays their backup quarterback a lot, and you can't expect him to come in and NOT perform.

Ah, makes a little sense then.

I recall a powerhouse program here getting crap for "running up the score" on a team; the coach was in the paper and pointed out that they had ALL backups in, were running the ball, up the gut every play - and everyone who got a carry was told NO bouncing it outside - and even the opposing coach had no problem with it. Some have the view that it's MORE embarrassing if a team up big starts taking kneeldowns.
