Coffeeman
Why "war eagle" when its the Auburn Tigers?
Captain Podnuh
Auburn has an identity problem. Eagles, Tigers, and Plainsmen...Oh my! They can't figure out what they want to be so they claim any of the three at any given time. shrug
PatrickL
we've never claimed to be the "eagles" get a clue. War Eagle is a battle cry, dates back to a game with Georgia in the early 1900's, things looked hopeless for the Tigers that day then an eagle started circling the field, at the same time an old civil war veteran known as a WAR EAGLE was in the crowd. people started chanting war eagle and the game turned toward the tigers favor and the cheer was forever enshrined with Auburn athletics. As far as being called "Plainsman" Auburn is referred to in a poem as the "loveliest village on the plains" and the student newspaper is called "The Plainsman" and male students at Auburn are referred to as Plainsmen. thanks.
