2005.01.06 BCS To Implement 'Oklahoma' Rule

MIAMI (SP)-- Following two dismal performances in national championship games, the BCS announced today that it would institute the “Oklahoma Rule” during the off-season. The rule states that if there is a three-way logjam at the top of the BCS poll at the end of the season, the two teams "not named Oklahoma" will play in the national championship game.

Oklahoma was trounced by USC 55-19 in Tuesday's Orange Bowl championship game. The following day, the phrase most used by sports commentators was “national embarrassment.” In 2004, the Sooners -- a controversial pick after losing 35-7 to Kansas State in the Big 12 championship game -- were beaten by LSU 21-14 in the BCS Championship Game at the Sugar Bowl.

"I'm sure Oklahomans are nice people, but we finally realized that the real problem with the BCS was Oklahoma," a BCS official told Sporting Press.

In a related story, national college football writers dust off their 1978 Bo Schembechler Bowl Game joke books and replace references to Schembechler with Bob Stoops. For instance: Q. Why does Bob Stoops eat his Cheerios on a plate? A. Because if it was in a bowl he’d lose it.

Ouch. That's gotta hurt! Funny though..

But they do lose some credibility for doing it over and over again. The LSU score from last yr was also a bit mis-leading. I never felt like Oklahoma had a serious shot at winning it. They got down early and then LSU kinda decided to lean on its defense to win. There was the KSU blowout as well. Even in 2k2 they were highly ranked before losing big to Okie State and A&M IIRC.

Stoops is still a great young coach but he's gotta figure out a way to get his teams to play better in the biggest games against teams not named Texas.

Real good teams just don't get blown out like this.

So either:

a)His teams haven't been that good the last 3 yrs to begin with.

b)They aren't well-coached to be disciplined enough when they can't just flat out bully someone.

c) A combination of the above.
