BCS outlook for USC and OSU

In the car today I was listening to ESPN's resident BCS expert on the Mike and Mike show. He had some very interesting insight into who will get that #2 spot at the end of the year.

Naturally, if either OSU or USC lose, then the other is clearly in the driver's seat. However if both those teams run the table, then this expert thinks OSU's chances of leapfrogging USC in the BCS are "above average".

For OSU, the key will be to pick up a BCS point by overtaking LSU in the AP and Coaches polls. A pair of wins over Purdue and Michigan may be enough all by itself, but a loss or even an unimpressive win by LSU would certainly clinch this outcome.

For USC, interestingly, the key is for Wash St. to win out, so USC's QW points don't disappear. In fact if WSU manages to climb a bit in the BCS then the real beneficiary is USC, via the QW component. Ironically, by beating Mich, OSU would improve USC's QW number, since in that case WSU would pass Mich in the BCS. At the same time OSU would lose potential QW points by Mich's drop out of the BCS top 10.

Regardless of the above, OSU stands to gain ground on USC in SOS in the final two weeks.

Bottom line, if OSU wins out, then it appears likely that enough of the other factors involved will break in OSU's favor and allow them to pass USC for the #2 spot.

Of course the shame of it is that LSU and WSU have as much to do with the final outcome as do USC and OSU.

Yeah I said that almost 2 weeks ago, that if OSU can get to #3 they will pass USC.

As far as depending on the results of WSU & LSU, the SOS and computer rankings depend on the results of everybody on the schedule all year. OSU has benefitted greatly from non-conference opponents NC State going 7-3 and BGSU going 7-2.

FWIW, ESPN is projecting that OSU is going to jump USC in tomorrow's BCS poll.

I still think Ohio State will lose to Michigan. I may be wrong but I think Michigan is just a better team at this point. I am however continually surprised by Ohio State and how they pull out wins, it would not surprise me if they did it again.

BTW, another title is on the line on Saturday ... I'll be at the Kansas State/Missouri game on Saturday hoping for a Wildcat win and another BIG 12 North title. cool_thu

I also hope KSU pulls it out. All yr I have been praising them as the team to beat in the North. Ive stated on many occasions they would probably waltz right through the Big 10. I still believe that to this day.

I hate all this trash talking! It is the same thing Miami fans did last year. Let it be played out on the field.

The Big 10 and Big 12 are both great conferences.

OSU and OU both have tremendous coaches.

I think they will be playing for the National Championship.

Here is the question - If Oklamhoma goes in undefeated and would lose to OSU OR USC who would be the National Champ. OSU and USC have both lost to unranked teams and Oklahoma would lose to #2. In my opinion Oklahoma at the worst should share the title.

HUH? Then why even play the game?

Whoever loses should finish no lower than second, assuming it's a close game. But leaving number one in first after losing to number two is ludicrous.

The winner of the game will be the National Champion. Think of it as a 1-game playoff.

National Champion doesn't mean most talented team all year. Oklahoma certainly has demonstrated they are the most talented team throughout the season.

National Champion today in the BCS era means you demonstrated success to get to the top 2 BCS rankings, and then you won the championship game.

Sarge, what on earth do you base this? Your Ouji board?

KSU was 4-1 in their non-conference games. They even beat two 9-win teams. McNeese State (9-1) and Massachussetts (9-2). By the way, why aren't we hearing all about these 2 terrific teams? Because they are Division 1AA!!!

Against other non-conference Division 1 teams, KSU went 2-1 and again (like Texas) they did NOT beat a winning team. They beat Cal (6-6) and Troy State (5-6) and lost to Marshall (6-4).

If they can't breeze through this schedule, why should I believe they would breeze through the Big 10?

By the way, I've now looked up 2 Big 12 schools (Texas and Kansas State) and neither won a non-conference game against a team with a winning record. Who should I check next?

Coffeeman:

OSU looked pretty lame with no offensive TDs vs. Purdue AT HOME.  What do they think will happen in the Big House??

Go Blue and Go Trojans!

Defense.... it's not sexy...kinda like taking the ugly **** to the prom...she's not pretty but she's good for a score and alot better than going alone.
