Gopher
Just wondering what any fans of either side have to say about this. I heard someone who was at the game say that, because of the wide disparity in talent between the two squads, it's hard to even consider these teams to be rivals anymore. Kind of hard to believe, but I was just curious what some of you Trojan/Bruin fans might think.
davearm
Coffee could probably speak to this question since he's a USC fan and lives in LA. I have a similar, but broader question: just how big is college football in a place like LA? It seems like every time the NFL explored the possibility of expanding or relocating a team to LA, the majority of Los Angelinos were overwhelmingly indifferent to having pro football in town. Just curious if this same mindset pervades the college scene too, especially this year given USC's season. Fans in the SEC, Big Ten, and elsewhere are pretty rabid, but you rarely hear much from/about Pac-10 fans on the West Coast.
Coffeeman
Yes, its' still a rivalry. Suffering through an 8-game loss streak during the 90's at the hands of the Bruins, I'd say we're just getting started at 5 in a row. And with the **** Domers winning/tying 13 in a row against us, the last 4 (or is it 5 now?) have been pretty sweet - 9 more baby, at LEAST 9 more! I hate the fans of those teams more than the teams themselves. But it is true - the last 3 vs. UCLA have been so lopsided its not quite as fun. Our 8 losses were never by that much, so I can't imagine what being a Bruin fan feels like right now... As you know, I'm of the more logical persuasion, not given to the rabid tendencies of some fans, but the rivalry is still big here. In most big offices like mine, you can draw a line right down the hallway and watch half of the workers come in on Monday totally jubilant, while the other half has their tail between their legs. Some are seen pissed off paying bets, like shaved heads, dyed hair or wearing cardinal and gold - love it! You don't get THAT kind of stuff unless your biggest rival is right in the SAME TOWN. And people wonder why we have riots out here... It was never similar between the Rams and Raiders because they didn't usually play each other, so the big rivals for Rams fans were the Niners and for the Raiders it was/is everybody - Bolts, Broncos, Chiefs, etc. (You are either a member of the Raider nation or you just hate them! I'm a Niner fan.) We are ambivalent when it comes to the NFL because we have lived without it for awhile now, but you can NEVER take the USC/UCLA game away from us - someone will burn down the city again! coach All year long, whenever the USC band plays "Tusk", we all shout "U-C-L-A SUCKS!" at certain parts of the song, to which the Director always frowns (he's so uptight!) but we don't care. If it REALLY bothered him, he just wouldn't play it so often, would he? Hmmmm....

Coffeeman
It's personal, going back to the mid-90s. Comments made to me and my family by some punks as we left the Rose Bowl one night after a close loss to UCLA, and then again by some Domer fans outside the Coliseum the following year. It is our turn now...
