McCarthy headed to the 49ersNew Orleans hires Roland to coach RBs Thursday, January 27, 2005 MOBILE, ALA. -- Saints offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy has been hired for the same position with the San Francisco 49ers, an NFL source said Wednesday night. McCarthy accepted an offer on a three-year contract from new 49ers coach Mike Nolan late Wednesday night. An announcement is expected to be made today. Also on Wednesday, the Saints reached an agreement in principle with Green Bay Packers assistant Johnny Roland for running backs coach. Roland, 61, is a 26-year coaching veteran who has coached running backs at Philadelphia, Chicago, the New York Jets, St. Louis, and Arizona. McCarthy's contract with the Saints expires Feb. 15. He was given permission by team officials to speak with other clubs. He previously interviewed with Detroit and Jacksonville and was scheduled to interview with Tennessee on Friday. Nolan interviewed McCarthy, 41, on Tuesday at the Senior Bowl. He was believed to be one of two finalists for the job, along with Cincinnati Bengals quarterbacks coach Ken Zambese. McCarthy was a member of the original staff Jim Haslett assembled in New Orleans in 2000. During his tenure the Saints established numerous offensive records and had a 1,000-yard rusher each season. The Saints ranked 15th in total offense in 2004. McCarthy's unit ranked 10th in total offense in 2000 and 2001. In the 33 years before he arrived, the Saints ranked in the top 10 in total offense three times: third in 1969, tied for eighth in 1978 and fourth in 1979. McCarthy's departure is the third change in Haslett's staff this offseason. Running backs coach Dave Atkins was fired Jan. 14. Offensive quality control coach Ben McAdoo left to join Walt Harris' staff at Stanford earlier this month. Haslett has had a plan in place for weeks to replace McCarthy and has worked discretely behind the scenes this week at the Senior Bowl to execute it. While the club has not made any official hires, targets have been identified and the final staff is starting to come into focus. Saints general manager Mickey Loomis, who has assumed the role of team spokesman during the offseason, declined to comment Wednesday, saying he preferred to wait until the staff was completed before making an official statement or announcement. The top candidate to replace McCarthy is ex-Miami Dolphins quarterbacks coach Marc Trestman. Haslett denied to South Florida reporters Wednesday that he has made an offer to Trestman, but NFL sources said that the veteran offensive assistant is weighing offers from the Saints and North Carolina State. Trestman, a 16-year NFL coaching veteran, is believed to be leaning toward the job at North Carolina State. Saints quarterbacks coach Mike Sheppard also is a potential candidate for the job. He has previous experience as an offensive coordinator in Buffalo (2001) and San Diego (1997 and 1998). The rest of the Saints staff is expected to return intact. The lone possible exception is defensive backs coach Greg Brown. Brown interviewed for the LSU defensive coordinator position two weeks ago and remains a candidate there. While no official announcement has been made, it appears veteran offensive line coach Jack Henry also will return. Henry, along with McCarthy, is one of two coaches whose contract will expire Feb. 15. Not sure why anybody would hire him to do it again. 675441[/snapback] Trestman MIN - RB TB - QB QB - CLE Offensive Coordinator - CLE '89 MIN - QB (left football for 3 years) Offensive Coordinator - SF '95-'96 DET - QB Offensive Coordinator - ARZ '98 - '00 OAK - QB Offensive Coordinator - OAK '02-'03 MIA - QB He's been an OC four times with no hint of moving up. He typically gets on with a team as a QB coach, then becomes an OC for a year or two before being fired where he lands elsewhere to be a QB coach and start the process over. I have NEVER been impressed with him. His claim to fame is the OAK '02 team that went to the Superbowl. Otherwise, his offenses have never fared well. I remember him in SF where he took a very powerful offense coming off a recent superbowl and drove it into the ground. I really think he is the kiss of death. Too bad he can't be traded or cut Hell, who'd want him in a trade anyway. Maybe Vince McMahon could use him to start up the XFL again and York could have his own nickname on a jersey,' THEY HATE ME' Looks like the 2005 season could yield another high draft pick for the niners.
