In any sport, at any time, anywhere, for any amount of money? They are the only D-1 programs in the state and UAF refuses to play.

This sound chicken shet to anyone else on here?

Yep. We have a similar situation here basketball-wise - Marquette University refuses to play Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Why? Well, yeah, chicken-sheet is a good description, but it's due to the risk/reward being highly skewed towards the negative - if the big program plays the small one, it's great for the small program, unless they get flat out demolished over and over; for the big program, unless they constantly demolish the smaller one (like they are presumably supposed to), they can suffer immeasurably in perception from barely winning or losing to a mid-major (read:"scrub") school.

They will not play Arkansas State becasue the last time they played, in case you do not remember, Arkansas, under new coach Nolan Richardson, nearly got beat in the NIT. Arkansas needed zebra help by looking the other way as Stephan More, elbowed Steve Weidower and nearly took his head off, in the last minutes of the game After that non call, Moore was on the sidelines being patted on the butt, by the never rascist Nolan Richardson. Arkansas won that game, but had to win it ugly. They will never play again because it took years for the school to get over the stigma of that game.

Two Words: Frank Broyles.

I think that pretty much sums it up. Once he dies, I think you might see some changes. It says a lot about Broyles that he will let Louisiana-Lafayette have a home game when they play the Hogs in Little Rock next year so they won't lose D-1 status. but he won't help out an in-state school.

There may be some changes once he croaks, although there is a good chance he's like Mr. Burns and will never die.

Responding to the enlightened

Posted on Wednesday 11 February @ 14:40:51

If ignorance is bliss, why aren’t more Hog fans happy?

While skimming a few boards devoted to UA athletics I remain astounded that the bliss that should accompany the opinions put forth is lacking.

Some ASU fans though might enjoy a few morsels, I encountered.

HOG FAN: Scheduling ULM wasn’t about ‘helping’ Louisiana Monroe, it was about making money for UA .

Interesting. Some ASU fans call Frank Broyles the “Old Liar”. Apparently this Hog fan agrees because according to a direct quote attributed to him in the official University of Arkansas press release announcing the series he says “This was a great opportunity for us to establish a long-term series while helping Louisiana-Monroe retain its Division I-A status.”

Which is it? Is the fan correct that it is about money and not helping ULM, or should we believe the STATED motive of the man who signed the contract?

HOG FAN: It is ASU’s goal to play UA in LR every year and split the seats and the gate revenue. This is based on what an ASU booster told him.

Well I’m on the Indian Club Board of Directors and have had extensive conversations with every athletic director from Lacewell to the present. This goal has never been revealed or alluded to at any of the booster club meetings nor in conversations with Larry Lacewell, Charlie Thorton, Brad Hovious, Barry Dowd, Joe Hollis, Paul Griffin and Dean Lee. I’ve even visited with presidents of ASU and Eugene Smith and Les Wyatt have never hinted at this plan.

If this is the plan we are apparently only revealing it to Hog fans while keeping it from our boosters.

HOG FAN: ASU can’t talk, they won’t play UCA any more.

Well we played two more in-state opponents in football in the last decade than Arkansas has since World War II. Who has the right to talk? The truth is that ASU-UCA was a scheduling fluke. We ended up having late openings on our schedule thanks to expansion of CUSA. ASU had a choice play at Kansas State or host Indiana State who was demanding the largest guarantee ever paid by ASU. Our athletic director had an idea and cleared it with the president. An offer was made to UAPB to come to Jonesboro. They refused (they had also refused an offer from Larry Lacewell years earlier). ASU then contacted UCA who accepted.

How many times has UA played in-state schools in basketball since WWII? A lot fewer than ASU who has played the past two years: UALR, UAPB, Arkansas Tech, Harding, Lyons College, and Williams Baptist.

For the past few years ASU has had difficulty scheduling due to the turmoil created by the formation of the Sun Belt and its later expansions. An opportunity arose to play an in-state but that didn’t work out (see below).

The fact is that the NCAA has changed the I-A criteria and ASU now finds itself in the position of likely not being able to schedule a non-I-A opponent again in football.

HOG FAN: Let ASU play UAPB first

Not like we haven’t tried. Larry Lacewell offered them a game, Barry Dowd offered them game, and Paul Griffin offered them game. Believe me Paul Griffin wanted to play in 2002 because it would have fixed a scheduling problem created by the league scheduling.

HOG FAN: ASU needs to drop back down so they can get the fans back.

ASU drew better last season at 5-7 than they did as a 12-2-1 I-AA national runner-up.

HOG FAN: ASU needs to drop back down to save money.

ASU was losing $1.2 to $1.8 million per year in I-AA. Take that deficit and adjust for inflation and ASU’s deficit is exactly the same. Taken as a percentage of the university budget it has fallen. The difference though is that deficit of today includes two sports (women’s golf and women’s soccer) that we didn’t play back then. ASU is offering more sports while the gap between spending and revenue has remained constant.

HOG FAN: UA doesn’t owe ASU anything

Well you still owe us 300 tickets you ripped us out of at the NIT game, but I digress. When the University of Arkansas deigns to use a facility that the taxpayers of Arkansas built, maintain, and rent to UA below actual cost to help a university funded by the taxpayers of Louisiana, then yes you do owe it to the taxpayers of Arkansas to extend similar gratuity to another institution in Arkansas. By the way for the benefit of Hog fans deigns means stoops or condescends, I add that since many seem unclear as to whether UA is playing ULM or LMU (the latter being incorrect).

I was never a proponent of the idea that ASU and UA needed to play. I’ve always been of the opinion that market forces would eventually make it happen. Today though, the Athletic Director at Arkansas is on the record stating that he intended to provide welfare to support what the good folks of Louisiana haven’t supported. ASU doesn’t even need that level of help, the Tribe met the attendance requirements last year.

HOG FAN: ASU should make it on its own.

Hey we are. Compare us to our peers in the Sun Belt, MAC, and WAC. We’re doing as well and unlike our peers we are doing it WITHOUT playing an in-state opponent in football.

HOG FAN: UA will lose recruits to ASU

OK. Jonathon Adams went to ASU. Who else? Let me rephrase that. Who else that was slated to be eligible at Arkansas? Whoops short list. Think of it this way. You are 18. You have a choice. Go to Arkansas or ASU who just beat Arkansas. OK, I know Arkansas is struggling so I’ve got a shot to play. At Arkansas I get to play an 8 game schedule home and home vs. SEC schools. I get 2 or 3 more games at home against ASU caliber schools. At Arkansas I get to be on national tv four times or so per season. If Arkansas finishes 6-5 or better I get to go to a bowl game. At Arkansas the crowds will all be 50,000 or more. Or I can go to ASU where I get 8 games vs. Sun Belt schools. One or two games vs. SEC caliber schools. I might be on regional tv once or twice per season. If we don’t win the conference I don’t go to a bowl game. I’m looking at playing some games in front of fewer than 20,000 people. But hey that win last year by ASU when I was in high school is enough to sway me. Yeah right.

HOG FAN: UA cannot afford to play a weak school like ASU because it will kill our chances at national rankings, or a national title

OK, Arkansas has three non-conference games next year. Texas? Fine. New Mexico State? They lost at home to ASU last year. ULM? They lost at War Memorial to ASU last year. If playing will hurt your strength of schedule what will playing two teams that ASU BEAT do to it?

HOG FAN: ASU fans HATE us because we won’t play them. I’m tired of hearing ASU fans wanting to play ASU

Humm, what would cure that?
