Video replay for college games?

A possibility this fall. What bothers me is no use in the bowl games or playoffs below Division I. If you are going to use it all season, shouldn't it be carried through ALL games?

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- An NCAA committee on Wednesday recommended that permission to use a video replay system tested last season in the Big Ten be expanded to all schools and conferences for further study during the 2005 football season.

 

The recommendation by the Football Rules Committee will be considered by an oversight panel Feb. 24 and, if approved, will be put in place for the regular season this fall.

 

"The response to video replay nationally and in the Big Ten was overwhelmingly positive," said Chuck Broyles, the coach at Pittsburg State and chairman of the rules committee. "When we have the ability to correct a potentially game-changing error, and we have the technology to do so, we feel this improves the fairness of the game and directly improves the student-athlete experience."

 

He said many conferences have asked permission to try the replay system for the 2005 season.

 

The Big Ten in December said replay was used in 28 of 57 conference games last season. Of the 43 calls questioned, 21 were overturned. Games where replay was used averaged three minutes longer than games without replay.

 

Under Wednesday's recommendation, any conference that wants to use video replay must confirm its plans with the rules committee by June 1.

 

"The preparation, training and educational effort needed to properly administer a system of review requires a commitment from a conference to make it run successfully," Broyles said. "There certainly is interest in the Division I-A level and our committee wants to encourage developments that will help the game."

 

The video replay would not be used in post-season bowl games or in NCAA championships below the Division I level.

I heard this on the radio today. Not sure how I feel about it. It will be interesting to see how they implement it.

im in the minority on this one, but I hated it for Big Ten games this year. It slowed down the game greatly, a lot more than the NFL system does. Not only that, but sometimes they review the most pointless plays, plays that would have no bearing either way.

 

I'm a proponent of instant replay, but they should fix it up a little bit if it is to be used for everyone.

Yeah, definitely some growing pains. There was a ball spot challenge in one of UW's games this year that literally took 7-8 minutes. It was ridiculous.

I think it would only work in a bowl game if the conferences that the two teams were in both used it. I don't remember which Hawkeye game it was this year (It was non-conference) but it wasn't being used because the other team was not Big Ten. Which makes sense because the other team had no point in knowing when to use it or whatnot. The rules were different than the NFL. I think the NCAA needs to get on the same page and have all conferences or none do it. We could go on for three years in this "trial" stage.
