Brewer
Any of you old timers remember the pre 1976 version? If so have you compared it to the current brew? Just thought that it would be interesting to hear any comparisons between the version that they are now offering and the old version that I remember alot of my friends fathers, my uncles, etc. drinking when I was younger. Rovers
I did drink it in high school, but I can't say I remember how it tasted. They claim to be using the exact same recipe though. One beer that I clone brewed that was a throwback, and really good, was the "original" Ballantine. It was an early version of an American IPA. I think it used Nugget hops, and had some maize in the recipe to give it a dry finish. I would expect that they are using some maize (flaked corn) in Rheingold too, for the dry finish it has. The Rheingold does finish dry. I hadn't bothered with it until the local shop had a special on it. $6.96 for a twelve and a pint glass. Thought what the hell. First batch of brew in awhile is going together next weekend Rovers. Gonna do an old pale ale recipie that was my staple.
Rovers
Can't go wrong with a nice pale ale! Brewer, what hop variety (ies) do you use in your pale ale? man, it's been a long time since I conjured up a homebrew.... but my health is getting better, and I think in another month or two.... I'll get the burners fired back up! That old Ballantine recipe was pretty good.... I can did it up if you want. A little maize makes some of the IPA's and pale Ales interesting..... ever used it? No flavor, really, just more alchohol with a drier finish. Don't need much either... maybe 3% of the grain bill... up to 7% tops. Most 2 row base barley's will have enough enzymes to convert it, even a Munich. Edited April 10, 2005 by Rovers
