Muck's Mock (v. 1.0)

...and now for something completely different...

1. San Francisco: Braylon Edwards, WR, Michigan

Ownership is cheap, and they know they will save SERIOUS coin taking a non-QB at #1. Further, they're not that convinced that there's a huge dropoff between the top two QBs (Rodgers and Smith) and guys further down the list (Frye, Campbell, etc.).

2. Minnesota (via Miami): Mike Williams, WR, USC

With the moderately suprising pick in SF, Miami suddenly has serious bargaining power with several teams angling for "one of the top two WRs", and their phone is ringing off the hook.

Saban has been telling everyone of his wish to pile up the number of picks...and he gets his wish. Minnesota sends their 1.07, 1.18, 4.19 and next years 2nd rounder in exchange for 1.02.

Gruden is not happy. His face locks in "Chucky-mode" for the next 45 minutes.

Meanwhile, Minnesota makes their first pick two years in a row within the alloted time.

Oh yeah, they picked the sticky-handed Mike Williams.

3. Cleveland: Derrick Johnson, LB, UTexas

The top two QBs are still on the board. Cleveland needs a QB. They also need some help on their defense...so, they go for the best defensive player on their board (and the top player on their board overall).

Weeping and gnashing of teeth can be heard from everyone in a Butkus jersey...

4. Chicago: Antrel Rolle, CB, Miami

After having spent a very high pick on Rex Grossman in the very recent past, plus some nice coin on Thomas Jones last offseason, they are reticent to go with a QB or a RB. And, with Cleveland sticking a dagger in their heart, they can't snag a great compliment to Urlacher.

No "top two" WR.

No "stud LB".

What to do? What to do?

At this point, Chicago would love to trade down...but there are no takers.

So, they swallow hard and take Antrel Rolle...and immediately look to find a new home for RW McQuarters. "Hello, is Carl Peterson there?"

5. Tampa Bay: Cadillac Williams, RB, Auburn

Chucky is thankful that Chicago at least allows him to get one of his top three guys...and his #2 rated Williams... Cadillac fills a major need in Tampa.

6. Washington (via Tennessee): Aaron Rodgers, QB, Cal

Snyder can't stand to simply wait his turn. He also can't stand to do something lo-key. So, he makes a big splash (again) and snags a QB to do battle with Ramsey (again) in training camp.

Tennessee is more than happy to move down a couple of slots because they have so many holes to fill. They can feel pretty good about their chances to get a very good CB a couple picks later. Tennessee takes Washington's 1.09 and 4.11 in this years' draft and their 2nd round pick in next years' draft for 1.06.

7. Detroit (via Miami (via Minnesota)): Alex Smith, QB, Utah

Saban continues to stockpile picks, trading his newly acquired 1.07 to Detroit in exchange for their 1.10 and 3.08.

Mariucci really liked what he saw in Alex Smith, and has never been a big fan of Joey Harrington. Besides, he doesn't believe that Denny Green believes Warner is more than a one or two year solution...and McCown is NOT the answer in Arizona...and, so, didn't want to risk losing out on the future signal caller in Motor City. HIS signal caller.

There is going to be "open competition" for the starting QB role in Detroit next year, and Mooch is going to give the new guy every opportunity to be successful.

8. Arizona: Ronnie Brown, RB, Auburn

Not expecting Ronnie Brown to still be on the board, Denny Green gets the braintrust in Buffalo on the phone and gives them the following proposition -- either -- Shelton for Henry and a swap of 3rd and 4th round picks ... or ... Shelton and 1.08 for McGahee.

Buffalo passes on both deals.

Denny Green then calls his friends in Miami (whom he has clandistinely been calling over the past few days) and offers Shelton and his 4th rounder for Patrick Surtain to shore up a very suspect CB corps. Saban readily accepts, beefing up his draft picks and his offensive line in the process...and getting rid of a salary cap headache.

It's rumored that when the trade sending Surtain to Arizona was announced that, in the Chiefs War Room, Carl Peterson actually punched Lamar Hunt out of frustration.

Arizona takes Ronnie Brown...and is immediately a threat to make the playoffs.

9. Miami (via Tennessee (via Washington)): Adam Jones, CB, West Virginia

Saban now trades up, knowing that there is a very good chance that Tennessee will take Pac-Man, he doesn't want to risk out losing his #1 rated defensive player...and Floyd Reese plays this threat to the hilt.

So, Saban takes the 1.10, plus the newly acquired 4.10 from Arizona and the 4.19 acquired earlier in the day from Minnesota and shoots them to Tennessee for 1.09.

Tennessee needs all sorts of help, and, besides, they weren't really looking at Jones anyhow...so, they were more than happy to take the picks to fill holes on both sides of the line.

In the first couple of hours of his first draft, Saban has turned the 1.02 and Patrick Surtain into 1.18, Minnesota's 2nd round pick for next year, Adam Jones and LJ Shelton. Wayne Huizenga can be heard saying, "So, this is how a competent coach conducts himself during a draft..."

10. Tennessee (via Miami (via Detroit)): Alex Barron, OT, Florida

Not really much to say, other than, should Barron be the kind of player Floyd Reese thinks he is, this should fill the largest of many cap-related holes in Tennessee.

11. Dallas: Shawne Merriman, DE/LB, Maryland

His versatility should allow Parcells to use him in all sorts of ways in a defense that needs help putting pressure on the QB.

Several GMs had been calling about this spot, but Parcells and Jones would have none of it...

12. San Diego: Mark Clayton, WR, Oaklahoma

Keenan McCardell isn't getting any younger. Antonio Gates intimidates the hell out of teams, and LaDanian is consistent, explosive and a threat every time he touches the ball. SD needs a solid young WR to complete the offense. And Clayton may be the most polished route runner in the draft.

Drew Brees is thankful for this pick this year and Phillip Rivers is thankful for the next decade or so...

13. Houston: Jamaal Brown, OT, Oklahoma

Capers considers Williamson, but decides that there are too many needs elsewhere to go with a WR here.

Besides, Carr still needs help, and the RBs need better lanes...getting a very solid OT is the best bang-for-the-buck pick that Houston can make here, and Brown is a big man who should help out immensely.

14. Carolina: Thomas Davis, S/LB, Georgia

The versatility that Thomas Davis brings to the table (he can play safety or OLB) gives the kind of flexibility that Carolina believes to be important in regrouping for another run at the playoffs.

Look for a guy like Vernand Morency to be given a very long look in the 2nd or 3rd round.

15. Kansas City: Carlos Rogers, CB, Auburn

With the trade that sent Surtain to Arizona, Peterson's hands are tied.

He added some help to the DL and LB corps, but, didn't add a CB in the offseason. Best CB on the board is the only way he can go...which is unfortunate, as Troy Williamson would have looked real nice in red and gold.

16. New Orleans: Troy Williamson, WR, South Carolina

Dante Stallworth has been a bust. Joe Horn is not getting younger. Boo Williams regressed significantly last year. The Saints need to stretch the field and give defenses something to think about besides Deuce McCallister.

17. Denver (via Cincinnati): Marcus Spears, DE, LSU

With lots of draft picks to use, Shannahan is suprised to see Spears fall past KC and New Orleans, and so decides to scoop in and trade 1.25 and 2.24 to Cincinnati for the rights to Marcus Spears. Marvin Lewis is only too happy to comply...which should allow him to find a few more pieces for his (hopefully) playoff bound team.

18. Miami (via Minnesota): Cedric Benson, RB, U Texas

Saban is a smart guy, and knows that Ricky Williams isn't a smart guy...even if he does come back, there is no guarantee he won't flip out down the road...possibly when the team can least afford his shenanigans and mental instability (see "Barrett Robbins").

With the trades earlier (adding Shelton from Arizona and drafting Pac-Man Jones), Benson is a very very welcome addition to the fold and makes Miami a team to be taken seriously.

19. St. Louis: Kalif Barnes, OT, Washington

No brainer pick. Bulger, Holt, Bruce, Jackson and Faulk all breathe a collective sigh of relief that Martz didn't do something whacky.

20. Dallas: DeMarcus Ware, Troy, DE/LB

As with their pick at 1.11, several GMs had been calling about this spot, but Parcells and Jones would have none of it.

After he turns in the card, Parcells twirls his hands and belts out a sinister laugh as he imagines Ware on one side and Merriman on the other...sometimes both on the DLine...sometimes both as LBs...or one at one and one at the other...

Needless to say, opposing offensive coordinators are NOT looking forward to these two guys up front with Roy Williams bludgeoning people in the secondary.

21. Jacksonville: Erasmus James, DE, Wisconsin

Del Rio wanted to trade down a few spots to pick up an additonal second or third round pick to help out his defense, but, found no takers. He's very tempted to take a CB here, but the upside allowed in James is the clincher.

22. Baltimore: Marlin Jackson, CB, Michigan

No real value at WR at this stage of the draft. Newsome and Co. want to get a young CB on board to learn from Deion (to the extent he'll be around) and McCallister.

Besides, the name "Chris Henry, WR, West Virginia" is already pencilled in their 2nd round card...

23. Seattle: Shaun Cody, DE/DT, USC

Lots of needs on defense; no real value at LB and no trading partners interested in moving up. Cody can fill a couple of spots on the line, and with the lack of depth on the d-line, the flexibility Cody brings to the table will be well worth the pick.

24. Green Bay: Justin Miller, CB, Clemson

GB needs all sorts of help in the defensive backfield. Despite their primary need being at safety, the Packers take the best d-back on the board in Miller, hoping that one of the safeties he's eyeing will drop to the 2nd round (at which point he'd consider trading up).

25. Cincinnati (via Denver): Travis Johnson, DT, Florida State

Marvin's trade with Shannahan plays out perfectly for the Bengals! Surprised to see TJ still on the board, Lewis does not hesitate getting his card to the desk. Johnson adds a very solid punch to the d-line...picking up Denver's 2.24 pick in the process...for a player he had evenly rated with the guy Denver took at #17.

26. NY Jets: David Pollack, DE, Georgia

San Diego has obscene amounts of cap space and could use some assistance on the pass rush (especially given the high octane offenses they'll face twice a year in OAK, DEN and KC).

So, prior to the 26th pick, Bradway and Edwards call and want to know if they're interested in trading for Abraham.

Schottenheimer says they are.

Bradway and Edwards offer and they offer 1.28 in exchange for John Abraham straight up.

The deal is done.

San Diego dramatically upgrades their pass rush and the Jets get rid of a headache, and will use the "aspirin" they acquired to partially offset the loss of produtction with David Pollack.

Besides, after the TE-related fiascos in Atlanta in prior years, the possibility of the Falcons taking Heath Miller are believed to be pretty low...but, they don't think that Pollack will make it past the pro team in his backyard.

Pollack can put some pressure on the QB and drop back in coverage. Besides, Edwards likes his attitude. So, the DE from Georgia is the pick here, with fingers crossed that Atlanta won't take this opportunity to back up Alge Crumpler.

27. Atlanta: Barrett Ruud, LB, Nebraska

Arthur Blank has made a pretty big deal about trying to bring in "solid character" guys, and the background of some of the other highly rated LBs (in particular Channing Crowder, LB, Florida) is "sketchy". Besides, Ruud is a pretty d@mn solid player.

28. NY Jets (via San Diego): Heath Miller, TE, UVa

Chad Pennington has a new weapon...who hopefully will compliment the fleet footed Lavareneus Coles.

Bradway and Edwards breathe a sigh of relief.

29. Indianapolis: Fabian Washington, CB, Nebraska

He's fast. Indy's CB are bad (to say the least). This is a no-brainer pick.

30. Pittsburgh: Matt Jones, WR/TE/QB/etc, Arkansas

Pittsburgh has had success taking college QBs and turning them into solid players at other positions (Ward, Randle El and even King Goiter for a while)...and with the need to replace the newly departed Plaxico Burress Cowher decides to try it again...

31. Philadelphia: Roddy White, WR, Alabama-Birmingham

Pinkston = pink slip.

32. New England: Darryl Blackstock, OLB, UVa

Rebuilding the linebackers is job #1 in NE. And, given Blackstocks' background (coached by Al Groh at UVa) and solid motor (he excels at pressuring the QB), NE figures Blackstock will be a nice part of this solution.

24. Green Bay:  Justin Miller, CB, Clemson

GB needs all sorts of help in the defensive backfield.  Despite their primary need being at safety, Sherman went with the best d-back on the board in Miller, hoping that one of the safeties he's eyeing will drop to the 2nd round (at which point he'd consider trading up).

Sherman (aka Peterson wannabe) is no longer GM. So we are not expecting more "huh" moves. (not a reflection on your analysis).

Yeah, that. That's what I meant.

Interesting, especially since you've gone against the grain on so many picks. However, as much as I dislike Joey Harrington (and that's a lot) I don't think that the Lions would (or should) take Alex Smith at 10 if he were there, let alone trade up to get him. We'll see. Stranger things have happened.

The Falcons won't take a LB in the first nor would anyone have to worry about them taking Pollack. I don't see him going in the first round at all.

I havent looked closely at the draft yet but the Falcons biggest needs are:

1. OL

2. DB

3. WR

4. DL

They seem to think that the WRs will get better in their second year in the offense and their tendancy hasn't been to draft OL early. This year they desperately need it though, so I'd say OL or DB in the first round... not knowing who's available.

I won't argue with Clayton at #12, but where are you coming up with the Jets-Chargers deal? :D That's just too bizarre for words! The selection of Pollack at #26 fills another need for the Bolts and is a good one. :D

I doubt the Ravens take a CB with their first pick.  McAllister and Rolle are at least top 3 CB pair in the league, possibly top pair.

774371

I don't think there's any doubt that McAlister and Rolle are the best CB tandem in the league. I'd say the Vikings' and Cowboys' would be a distant 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

Good job on your mock! This situation could easily happen and you are the first one to post a Mock where I agree with the Bucs pick. Yes, Gruden wants Mike Williams but there is a good chance the Bears will snag him first. If that happens, Gruden will either trade down or settle for Caddy.

Although any player taken at 4 is going to help my beloved Bears, I just don't see a CB being their choice here. They are running 4 deep at CB, with McQuarters being the odd man out at this time. Tillman, Azumah, and Nathan Vasher (who had a very decent rookie year) are the top 3, and forced McQuarters to play some FS last year eventually.

They will find a new home for RW, and it may be one of those "sign a new deal or get cut" things.

In this mock, the two need guys are gone, and the LB that I know they need is gone. With all the RB's available, I see a move for Benson in this spot.

this is the most pathetic mock draft i have ever seen. The trades make absolutely no sense and the picks are even worse. Nice waste of time. Oh and the bears have so much cb depth that if they took a cb it would be like the chiefs drafting a first round runningback.

True or not .... at least he adds something to this board.

Anyone that has watched the draft in previous years knows that anything is possible and you will be surprised with a few of the picks and trades.

This mock was intended to spur conversation, not to represent what I think will happen.

Everyone seems to have these consensus opinions about what will and what will not happen in the draft ... and as we all should have learned from watching drafts in the past is that there are ALWAYS surprises...and those surprises have a cascading effect!

So, consider this a mock draft involving lots of surprises (that, frankly, aren't that much of a stretch).

If you consider yourself to be a knowledgable football fan and don't consider all the possibilities (like Indy drafting Edge over RWilliams...or...New Orleans drafting Deuce McCallister in the first round...or Buffalo drafting Willis McGahee...or...San Diego drafting Eli Manning and promptly trading him to the Giants) you're more a moron than a savvy fan.

[Forrest Gump]And that's all I have to say about that.[/Forrest Gump]

Does anyone honestly think the Vikings would package 4 draft picks to move up 5 spots?  I mean come-on...is anyone that stupid??  Oh wait, that would be the Minnesota Vikings.  I hope to hell it doesn't happen. :D

774259

The Vikings are dynasty builders. Unfortunately for their fans, they build other teams into dynastys. As a Dallas fan, all I can say is thanks. :D
