Giants Grade on Draft

Mel Kiper's rating from a pervious post:

New York Giants: C

Cornerback Corey Webster was slowed by nagging injuries last season but is a tremendous cover man when healthy and had a top-10 grade after his junior season. Justin Tuck is an OK end in the third round but should have gone back to Notre Dame; Brandon Jacobs should carve a niche as a power back; and end Eric Moore is also an OK pick. The Giants just did not have enough selections to make a big impact on their football team.

I think with free agent agency you have to grade the whole offseason. I think the Giants get an A for there offseason transactions. We address our needs at WR, OT, LB, CB, and DL with very good players. Considering that the Giants very rarely get production from their first round pick anyway I was very happy. Webster and Tuck were quality guys and should be productive in the NFL. Webster would've been a first round pick last year. Tuck had a chance to go back to school and possibly go late 1st or 2nd round. So I look at it as we got a 1st and 2nd round this year. Heck, as a Giants fan I want them to trade their #1 every year for the other teams current #2 and next year's #2. This way we would have 3 #2's every year starting in the 2nd year. With their track record they would save money on signings and get more productive players.

Just a my $.02.

Bree22, I agree, it's been an amazing offseason for us. I couldn't be happier going into mini-camps. There's still some positions to address, but right now we look good.

I'd give their draft a solid B, because they made the most of the picks they had and got the players they were targeting.

I guess this TimD guy is new. I haven't been on the boards much the past couple of weeks, but it seems we have some new entertainment around here. :D

He's dropping something, but it aint knowledge! :D

I think Tuck could develop into a pretty good NFL DE. Not sure I agree about that big RB though, I've read that he is easy to trip up due to his size and because he runs too high. That is probably less of a problem at the goal line and short yardage situations though. I think he is strictly a short yardage specialist in the NFL.

ron dayne doesn't drop weight.  He does drop passes.

But more frequently, he gets dropped behind the line.

As Los said, Dayne couldn't even get to the line. He'd dance left or right, take one hit, and fall backwards. So happy to see him gone. Enjoy Shanny!

With that said, there is concern that he is too tall, but he'll be coached to run behind his pads. He's by no means a sure thing, but it can't be denied that the dude is big and it will be interesting to see what he can do for us.

I agree, but he was a 4th rounder. How many 4th rounders work out for any team? If he can carry the rock 4 or 5 times a game on short yardage then he was worth it. Remember with a salary cap a team has to manage it's money. 2nd rounder on down don't make alot of $ in their first 3 years or so and have alot to prove to make the $$$. You only have to pay for the ones that do make it. All in all we spent a little more in FA but saved on the draft. We basically got 3 starters and 2 quality backups that hopefully will grow into starters. Keep building each year like the Eagles and Patriots and you will remain at the top.
