NY Jets IDP Outlook

Recommended Posts

Points are based on the DWII IDP scoring system, available for viewing in the League Forum.

Linebackers

Jonathan Vilma, MLB

2004 Scoring: 217

Second year pro out of Miami. 6'1", 230 pounds, 23 years old.

Took over the starting MLB spot from Cowart during game 2 of 2004. One of the best MLB's in the NFL, especially in dynasty leagues. Finished at #20 in scoring amoung all LB's and has a chance to finish in the top five in 2005. He is a three down LB. Upside: Hugh. Points projection: 245

Victor Hobson, SLB

2004 Scoring: 82

Third year pro out of Michigan. 6'0", 252 pounds, 25 years old.

Missed 5 and a half games in 2004. Would have projected out to about 150 points. Hobson gets pulled in the nickel and dime and his numbers reflect that. Hobson is a solid run defender. Upside: What you see is what you get. Points projection: 160

Eric Barton, WLB

2004 Scoring: 210.5

7th year pro out of Maryland. 6'2", 245 pounds, 27 years old.

Picked up as an UFA from Oakland after the 2002 season, he led the Jets in tackles in 2003 with 125. Solid stereotypical Weak side linebacker who usually stays in for the nickel and goes out on the dime defense. Upside: Not much, but he was #23 in all LB scoring in 2004, so expect more of the same. Points projection: 215

Barring injuries, these are the Jets full time backers, and none have any serious threat to take thier starting jobs away. Kenyatta Wright is the primary backup, and does see playing time. Mark Brown filled in for Hobson last year, but was disappointing.

UPDATE- 8/14- Barton sat out the first preseaon game with a knee, which is reported as tendonitis. This bears watching, as tendonitis is what caused Barrow to miss all of the 2004 season. McGlover started, and promtly broke his ankle. Brown filled in at the WSLB spot.

Defensive Line[/b]

John Abraham, DE

2004 Scoring: 126.5

6th year pro out of South Carolina. 6'4", 256 pounds, 27years old.

A first round draft pick with an awesome pass rush, not good against the run, and so far very injury prone. Missed 5 games in 2004, but still was the #26 highest DL scorer. Not attending OTA's or the mini camp because he refused to sign the Franchised player contract the Jets tendered. Past and continueing character issues. When he wants to play, he is awesome. If only the mood struck him more often. Points projection: 180 if he stays healthy. He wont, even though it's another contract year. Another underperforming 150 or so.

UPDATE- 8/14-

Abraham continues to refuse to sign the tender. Bryan Thomas has played well in his abscence as has 2nd year man Trevor Johnson out of Nebraska.

Shaun Ellis, DE

2004 Scoring: 136.5

6th year pro out of Tennesse, 6'5", 285 pounds, 27 years old.

12th overall pick in 2000, he has developed into a team leader on defense. Missed one game in 2004. #19 in scoring for DL's in 2004. Led Jets in sacks the last two years, with 11 in 2004. Strong against the run, a solid every down IDP player. Points projection: 145

Dewayne Robertson, DL/Technique 3

2004 Scoring: 104

3rd year pro out of Kentucky, 6'1", 317 pounds, 23 years old.

4th overall pick in 2003, is a future pro bowler. Very solid against the run, and maintains his lane in the pass rush, producing 3 sacks in 2004. Many more QB pressures. The anchor of the Jets D line. Will only improve, and may become a dominant tackle in the NFL. points projection: 140

UPDATE- 8/14-

Robertson was held out of the 1st preseason game with a degenerative arthriitic knee condition. This is the same condition Foster and Davis had which eventually resulted in microfracture surgery. He has little cartilage in this knee, and this is a situation that bears watching for dynasty leagues. He is expected to be able to play through the pain this year.

Slant nose/DT

This is the position Ferguson left open with his departure to Dallas. I think that for 2004, it will be filled by committee. I think the kid out of Utah, Sione Pouha will be the starter, but will not play half the game. James Reed will spell him, and newly signed Lance Legree will see time there as well. Legree also knows the technique 3 position that Robertson holds down, so he will see some "blow time" at that position as well.

Defensive Backfield

Erik Coleman, Free Safety

2004 Scoring: 211

2nd year pro out of Washington State, 5'10", 200 pounds, 23 years old.

This kid was a HUGH surprise, being a fifth round pick that stepped up and has a lock on his starting job. Finishing at #11 in DB scoring in 2004, he is a ball hawk and can tackle. Good upside. He will be a starter in the Jets D backfield for a long time. Points Projection: 215

Strong Safety

This position is somewhat up in the air. Reggie Tongue is the old incumbant, after filling in for Jon McGraw due to injury. Kerry Rhodes may also find some playing time at SS this year, but as a rookie, his time will be limited. Stay away from this position on the Jets.

UPDATE- 8/14- Oliver Celestin has been practicing with the 1st team defense for two weeks, but was unremarkable in his first preseason game, as was Coleman. Rhodes came in and was very impressive, going up for a Garcia INT and making several other notable plays. If this trend continues, Rhodes may steal the job. McGraw having been traded to Detroit is obviously no longer a Jet.

Corner Backs

David Barett, CB

2004 Scoring: 171

6th year pro out of Arkanas, 5'10", 195 pounds, 27 years old.

picked up as an UFA from Arizona, has been a very pleasant addition to the Jets. Not a big playmaker, but good enough to be in the top 50 DB's in the NFL in fantasy scoring. A solid bye week DB.

The OTHER CB

This is very much up in the air. Justin Miller, the rookie may challenge for this spot, as might Ray Mickens, not to mention the Jets' continued interest in Ty Law. Derrick Strait, it would appear, is strictly a nickel package DB.

UPDATE- 8/14-

With the signing of Ty Law, he obviously becomes the starter. Mickens was released, so Miller becomes the #3 CB. Based on the current situation, Celestin is probable the 4th CB, given the depth at the safety position. Strait remains the nickel back.

Summary

Defensive Scheme

The Jets use a base 4-3, but will have an occassional 3-4 look, with Abraham up. They don't use the 3-4 as much as they had hoped, as despite his speed, Abraham hasn't been vey good at his attempts at dropping back into coverage like an LB. He has the tools, he just doesn't like to do it. The Jets also employ the cover 2. This is a fairly complex scheme, and the Safeties have to know it. It is much simpler for the CB's, which is why Justin Miller has a shot at the open CB position. This is also true for the nickel and dime packages. They are complex, and other than the CB's, the DB's really have to understand what thier responsibilities are. Both Mickens and Strait know this system, and for better or worse, they get pidgeon holed into these part time formations, which hurts thier playing time and opportunity to generate IDP fantasy points.

Back ups and Players to Watch[/b]

Kerry Rhodes-DB, ST specialist

After the Jets drafted Rhodes, they got a call from Parcells who said he was Dallas' highest ranked ST DB in the draft. He has the tools to be a starting FS/SS down the road, but is a project, as the cover 2 defense takes some time for a rookie to learn. I project him to be a starter at SS or FS in 2007. He could be a stud DB down the road, but is by no means a sure thing.

Sione Pouha-DT

This guy is HUGH! (That means huge for those new to the Huddle) at 6'3", 325 and not at all fat, he blew every other draftee at the combine out of the water on strength tests, by a wide margin. He comes into the NFL at the ripe old age of 26, but with a great character-work ethic reputation. He got tired in college and reportedly took plays off, due to his size and the fact that he was almost always double teamed, but Edwards compared him to Robertson in his rookie year (who looks to me to be a lock as a future pro-bowler) saying that he has stamina issues just like him. However, as a slant nose in the technique 3 defensive line scheme, it is unlikely he would ever become an IDP FF stud. He will see at least 20 plays a game in his rookie year, however, as my projection.

Lance Legree, James Reed, DT's

Legree was a fill in DT ofr the Giants last year, but knows the technique 3 LDT spot. That makes him Robertson's primary backup, but he will see time at the slant nose as well, until Pouha can show he can play every down without tiring. Jame Reed is insurance for the slant nose spot, behing Pouha. Neither deserve IDP consideration.

I agree... Abraham still has to prove he has the will to play a full season.... whether it's his health or his attitude. Vilma is a complete football player, from head to toe. While Ellis may not be the flashy DE, he may actually outscore Abraham, unless Abraham stays healthy and keeps his head on straight.

The sleeper here is Justin Miller. If a league awards return yards and special teams TD's for IP's, he should be a stud from week one. This kid is raw, but is a risk taker and a ball hawk. He could quickly become a top twenty CB in the NFL. In a dynasty league, I think he is under the radar at this time. He has upside.

I never mentioned Donnie Abraham.... and that is because he is not in the Jets plans. He will be a June 1 cut.

I'd love to see other homer reports like this for IDP purposes. It took me a couple hours to write this up, but I asked for an IDP forum, and said I'd be a regular contributor. I will attempt to do the Giants in the next day or two for comments and info.

Great idea, Rovers. I am going to start/pin a thread so people can sign up to be "Team Correspondents" with respect to IDPs. I may have these people, if they agree, keep this "position" for not only the off-season and draft time, but for the entire season, as to keep the Huddle Nation apprised of changes, trends, etc.

Yea, but no one else knows..... OK, I agreed to tally the votes for the Huddle Annual Awards this year for Hugh One and rajncajn. Well, I used all sorts of tags n stuff to make the thing look all purty..... and the site left all these tags open. When I tried to edit it all out, it just got worse. I ended up typing the whole thing out like three times. I aint gonna mess with my Jets report. let someone else who knows how to do it without screwin it all up fix it! How come these stinkin tags don't werk right in the first place? :D

Some don't work well with others & I believe you can only use so many codes on one string of text. For instance, you can change the size of a font & change the style & color, but you can't bold it or italicize it. Not sure which ones work together & which ones don't, but i believe that may be your problem here.

Well, becuase I know how touchy those tags are, I only used the size tags. Still, those brackets showed up, not in the post preview, but when I posted it. After that awards thread fiasco, I am NOT gonna mess with a post that took me hours to write! :D

The latest news on the Jets' D front is the fact that last year's starting CB, Donnie Abraham has decided against retirement. This comes as a HUGH surprise to this Jets fan. A look at what's happened so far:

1. Abraham is not invited to the may mini camp. Rumors are he will retire.

2. In a post mini camp press conference, HC Herm Edwards says he hasn't spoken to Abraham, and is reluctant to do so, because it will be a very "difficult conversation" for both of them.

3. Abraham announces he will be at the next team OTA, prior to June 1.

My take: Edwards, and the Jets were not happy with Abraham last year at all, despite the good game he had against the Steelers in the playoff game. I believe, but am not sure, that it would help the Jets cap situation if Abraham retired, instead of being a June 1 cut. So, I'm not sure what the cap and finacial situation is, and I think this is at least part of the story. Ol Hermy has a soft spot for players, and I think he caved into Abraham when he insisted on having another chance. I expect Mickens and rookie justin Miller to fight for the starting CB job. My guess is that Mickens will start, and move to the nickel, when Miller will come in as the CB in passing defensive situations. Abraham will be cut on June 1.

Well, all signs now point to me being wrong about Donnie Abraham. It seems the Jets are willing to bend over backwards to get Abraham to play this year. Last year, it was no secret they weren't happy with his play, and now, there appears to be a complete about face taking place. He will be excused from Monday meetings to go home to Florida during the season. Plus, his cap hit this year is pretty big. This whole thing is a head scratcher. I think that the Jets would be much better off cutting him, and letting Mickens and rookie Justin Miller share duties at CB, but what do I know? Pay a guy 2 mil when he's not even sure (still, even now) that he wants to play? He got burnt more than my toast did last year, but Hermie seems to love him. Apparently, this retention of future pro-bowler Donnie Abraham has taken the Jets out of the Ty Law bidding. :D Sometimes I think Herm Edwards is sniffing glue. If they cut Abraham, they have enough cap to get Law. Makes no sense to me, but that's how it's playing out, apparently.

Hey Rov-man, what's the word on Miller? I notice you mentioned him in one of the earlier posts here. I have him in a dynasty league and was hoping he'd win the CB position outright. I'm VERY deep and good at DB, but was hoping he'd get into a position where I could trade him for help elsewhere. Thanks! :D

Well, I spent some time at some of the Jets' homer board today. There are rumors circulating that the whole Abraham thing is a smoke screen. Why? So when they cut him on June 1, they can sign Law. Now, this is all absolute unconfirmed info, but there have been two reports so far that insist it's true insider info. One of these two guys had the Blaylock signing a week before it happened...so....? What to think? It's speculative at best right now. Mainstream media has the Jets out of the Ty Law sweepstakes, but they held thier cards close to the vest like this on the Nugent draft pick too..... after Herm repeatedly swore Brien was the 2005 kicker.

Darin, Miller is a starter, but it's a question of when. It doesn't look like this year though, either way (Abraham or Law) Miller WILL be the kickoff and punt returner, no doubt about that. If it's Abraham, I'd expect to see Miller get some playing time at corner. If it's Law, Barrett may or may not respond well to being the new target of the Jets D backfield. That could get Miller some playing time too. This situation is very much up in the air now. If it were up to me, I'd play Mickens and Miller at the open CB spot, and forget these 30+ year old CB's. But, my name ain't Herm, and I wouldn't change that if I could! After the June 1 cuts, the table will be set. Until then..... it's anyone's guess!

Sweet write up Rovers, as a fellow Jet homer I cant really argue with you on any points made. Only thing I will add is that if anyone has Donnie Abraham, drop him like a ton of bricks. Once the thought of retirement sets in, you're heart is no longer in it. He has personal issues combinined with his age and production. I personally dropped or will drop him in every league I have (3rd CB in all). Herm is a "players" coach but IMO gives his players too much rope. I believe they save a significant amount of cap $$$ if he retires, but I also believe the cap savings is more the closer your are to the season. I think you are right on with the Law scenario as I have heard that as well. As for Miller, I love that kid, had him #4 overall CB on my draft list and was very happy when he fell to us @ 2.25. He also is a returner. Worst case this year he sees spot duty an adjusts to the speed of the game. Hopefully he can lock down that CB spot for years to come. I personally drafted him in 2 leagues (real late, 7th round, CB's not a real good point guys FF wise) and I will prolly spend a PS spot on him. Solid D, homer and ff wise, if Johnny A gets his head out of his ass, combined with Vilma and Coleman. We need the young guns to step up. Getting closer ROvers, almost there, but the O/Penny/line scare me, but that is for another thread......... I'll check back from time to time to make sure you dont f*ck anything up, but me thinks you have a handle on it :D

House of Pain, thanks! Nice to know the Jets police approve! :D I have to update the main body on all this CB uncertainty. Donnie should be cut loose, period. I agree, his heart isnt where it needs to be to play in this emotional game. Miller doesn't have all that much to learn as a CB in the cover 2, I really wish they would let him play. I think he will get burnt some, but likely can take it to the house just as often, if not more so. Coleman worked out just fine as a rookie last year, why not give Miller a shot too? I'm not worried about the loss of Ferguson, between Pouha, Legree and Reed, I think we'll be fine.

As for the offensive RT spot, it seems they believe Jones can handle it, but picking up Ethan Brooks as an UFA from the Ravens makes me feel we at least have a fall back plan if Jones falters. Everything rides on Chad's shoulders, so to speak! I don't think the team is good enough to win if Fiedler has to step in for any length of time. :D

Well, things change, and my initial report on Kerry Rhodes, while optomistic, I still may have underestimated his potential.

Rich Cimini, who is a NY Daily News regular, and a Sporting News PT'er reported that Rhodes is turning heads in the OTA's. What I didnt mention was that the Jets traded up in the 4th round to get Rhodes. Rhodes is 6'2", 210 lbs, has 4.5 speed and a 42" vertical. It's early, with no pads yet, but Rhodes may even win a starting job this year. The Jets are down on Reggie Tongue, and McGraw, while he has all the measurables, and is a ferocious hitter, has so far not been able to stay healthy, after being a second round pick two years ago.

I think now, there is even a chance that Tongue gets released. The safety positions would then become a little muddled. Last years' rookie phenom, Eric Coleman, can't really cover TE's. The Jets D scheme makes for little difference between the FS and SS positions. They tend to interchange coverage and run support responsibilities. If a TE goes in motion, and there is a blitz on, Coleman becomes the opposing OC's target in a size mismatch. So..... there is a possibilty now, with Rhodes emergence, that there could be a rotation of McGraw, Coleman and Rhodes. There is even a very outside chance that McGraw and Rhodes are the two starters. They can both play SS and FS, interchangably. This interchangablilty is what the Jets D coordinator, Donnie Henderson loves to use.

It's too early to tell at this point, how it will fall out. My gut feel is Tongue gets cut, and McGraw starts at SS, Coleman at FS. If Coleman gets victimized by TE's in the pattern, there could be a mid season change. In the end, it's nice to have all three of these guys, McGraw, Coleman and Rhodes on your IDP roster, but it's risky right now to count on any one of the three as full time starters. Each of the three are young, and McGraw and Rhodes have the measurables. Coleman is an instinctive player, whose on field performance surpasses his measuables.

I would say having any of the three in a dynasty league is a no lose proposition. For this year, there are some questions.

:D:D I'm smarter than I even thought I was! :D Today, the Jets cut Reggie Toungue. This solidifies 2nd year man E Coleman to return as the starting FS for the Jets. I expect McGraw to win the starting SS spot. McGraw absolutely lays people out when he hits them, and in part is why he gets hurt so often. With this roster move, the rookie Rhodes should be the primary backup for both the FS and SS positions. Another rookie, Maddox is also in the mix, and is known as a big hitter as well. Rhodes may be a more natural FS, but the Jets like to use the FS and SS positions interchangably. It's more like a left safety and a right safety.

From a football perspective, Tongue is an addition by subtraction. He did not play well last year, although he had a big INT for TD against Pittsburgh in the playoffs. This also raises the question of Ty Law again. If the Jets also release Abraham, there might be cap room for him.

I will update the main thread to reflect the new changes.

Some comments from darin3's secret Jets source:

I think the loss of Jason Ferguson means that rookie Pouha will allow more tackles to be taken by the Line Backers and DB's (hopefully not too many by the DBs!). I expect a drop-off from Robertson, who will get double teamed a lot unless Reed/Pouha make quick progress. I also think Abraham will be signed to a long-term deal and will be a monster this year. I think David Barrett was amazing during the playoffs and will be a much improved player this year. Vilma = Ray Lewis II. Trust me.

:D discuss?

First, I have to say that it seems McGraw has had a recent (undisclosed) surgery. There is a very good chance that the starting SS for the Jets this year will be a rookie. Of the two, Maddox is the more natural SS, and Rhodes a FS. However, I think Rhodes now has the inside track to be the starter at SS. This is a situation that could change once the pads are on, as Rhodes is not the physical tackler that Maddox is. I can't count McGraw out yet, but it does seem like he is on the outside looking in at the moment.

darin, the loss of Ferguson, is IMHO, very over rated. He was an average slant nose/DT until last year, when he stepped up his game a notch. Pouha, on the other hand, has been under rated. Herm Edwards loves this guy. He had 32 reps at the combine. From http://www.900footballlinks.net/jetsframe.htm

Pouha is a player with unlimited potential. He did not play up to his athletic talent in college, so the Jets staff will need to get Pouha to follow coaching, and not try to get by on his athleticism alone. If the succeed, they could have the best defensive line in football (also assuming Abraham doesn't hold out).

As I said, Herm loves him. He has taken him under his wing.... he likes that Pouha, while 26 years old, is a dedicated family man and quite religious. Pouha will get special attention, way beyond what most players would ever get. Pouha has said all the right things. He has brute stength, and is just a beast, at 6'3" and 330 pounds, and NOT fat at all. Tell me if this guy looks fat?

http://www.spimag.com/Sione_Pouha.htm

He is explosive off the line. It all depends on two things. He needs to learn technique and how to use his brute strength to his advantage, and stop relying on his athletisism to get by. That is a pure coaching issue. The other thing is he gets tired, lacks stamina. Edwards said Pouha reminds him of Dwayne Robertson his rookie year (2003). He said in the fourth quarter, Robertson was next to him on the sideline because his tank was empty. So, I think Pouha will be getting at least 20 plays/game, starting in week 1. If Robertson gets doubled, Pouha has both the power and speed to cause havoc. I am more concerned about when Pouha is not in the game. Lance Legree was a career fill in for a bad Giants D line. James Reed is worse. When they are in, things could get a little ugly. If there is an increase in LB stats, it will be because of these two, not because of Pouha.

Pouha will take his lumps, like all rookies will, but by next year, Jet fans won't remember who Ferguson was. It all depends on how quickly Pouha can learn and improve his stamina. He has the size, speed (a 5.0sec 40 time) and power (he can squat 675) I don't expect to see a big increase in LB tackles, but some small increase should be expected in the center of the field. It really depends on how many snaps Pouha can take before he turns into a rag. Vilma's increase in tackles will come from the outside, as he learns not to over persue this year.

I think what Barrett did last year is about what he will do this year. He's a solid WLB. Vilma's numbers should go up.... he only started 14 games last year, and he's smart. He was still learning last year. This year he should take better advantage of his sideline to sideline speed. He sometimes bit on outside and mis-direction plays last year. He'll be better at those things this year.

More tackles by the DB's? I don't see it. Other than the fact that Tongue forgot how to tackle, the SS's number should go up. The new Jets D backfield will be very young. FS Coleman, second year, SS McGraw (3rd year) or rookies Maddox or Rhodes at SS, Barrett has been around a while, but Miller may still beat out Donnie Abraham for the other starting CB spot. I would expect teams to try and test this youthful D backfield as much as possible.

darin3 is full of shucks. LOL @ secret source. Did you hear a clip of my dear ole GM Pat Kirwan ???? On the $$$ again Rovers, you get a passing grade once more :D...... McGraw IMO is nothing more as breather at this point due to his inability to stay on the field. I do like the green colored glasses you wear, it's almost like you are trying to convince yourself of something. Pouha has done shucks and combine #'s = a pile of dog shucks. The big difference I see this year is we finally have depth @ key positions on D. I'd rather have Rhodes, who is a natural FS as the SS. Maddox can spell. I overall like the way the D is shaping up, but it is early. Put the f'in pads on, let's f'in go and we will see. It's been a long time since they had this much promise, and by the looks of the O (which I dont like at all), they could be on the field ALOT.......

House of Pain is not named after a bunch of whiggers jumpin up and down @ the Paddy's Day parade video, it comes from my mood in the late 90's. One of my daughter's 1st words were, "flipin Vinny"........

HoP, Yeah, I am the eternal optomist, but I wouldn't want it any other way. You have to admit, Pouha has all the measurables...... but is he a football player? I'm not as worried about the D line as I am at the CB spot D Abraham is penciled in at. Rhodes has to prove he is a better tackler than his reputation indicates. The upside is, whether it's McGraw, Rhodes, or even Maddox, we will have a big speed upgrade over Tongue. I am hoping Miller steps in. I think DRob will improve some more this year, his third. Our LB corp is solid, and has depth. Hobson should get his starting job back, and Brown, while I wasn't impressed with him last year, most others seem to like him.

The O line is more worrisome.... Fabini was't good last year, Mawae is old, Jones is an untested second year guy. But, this is an IDP forum! :D

J Abraham is expected to sign the franchise tender, with the agreement he can't be tagged or transitioned next year, like the S Alexander deal. He's expected to report tomorrow.

Ty Law rumors are getting hot and heavy now. Clayton reported he expected Law to sign with the Jets within the next few days, but this is still in the rumor stage.
