whomper
So I go to a BBQ yesterday and the host has 2 chickens standing upright on the grill. He tells me its beer can chicken. You take a beer drink half and leave the can half full then he added some sort of barbeque sauce that fills up the rest of the can.He placed the chicken over the can and slow cooked it on the grill for 3 hours. The chicken fell off the bone and was delicious.. Edited May 30, 2005 by whomper

Puddy
My neighbor has done that before. Swears by it. It better be good if I'm using some of my beer on it.
frenzal rhomb
I'm having difficulty visualizing the setup here. Does the chicken rest on the can, does it go on the top rack and doesn't the heat do some kind of damage to the can where toxins can play a role. I'd like to try this but need some help here. We bought a can/chicken holder at the store that works great. We have also done it with an orange soda and an orange marmalade basting sauce. Very good way to do chicken Edited May 30, 2005 by Grits and Shins

Any rub or recipe you'd like really....don't forget to generously salt the cavity too...you really cannot oversalt chicken. Blitz has it right....just make sure it is indirect heat. If you have a gas grill with 2 zones...light one zone and put the chicken over the other zone. Briquettes? Get them white hot....make a ring with them around the outside and put the chicken in the center. Easy. Oh...and forget the "ad for a poultry roaster" at the top of the page.....LOL. MikesVikes
The bad news is the host needs about 4 hours of bathroom time to get enough of the required bbq sauce.

Big F'n Dave
Good Lord, it's drunk chicken. Not like the guy discovered a cure for the common cold or something. I'm amazed that those of you who reside in places other than the South have managed not to starve to death. Kid Cid
One of my favorite ways to do chicken on the grill. Be creative. Different beers add subtle (or not so subtle) flavor differences. I personally like a somewhat Cajun rub, but there are many, many rubs that work. 16 oz cans work the best. They are tall enough to support the chicken but not too wide to not fit in the hole. Of course you can spring for one of those contraptions. Allows you to try it with other things (wine, soda, etc.).
