I'd like to be optimistic about his abilities, since I think he was pretty much on the same par as Brees when coming out of college. I'll need to look at their numbers to see if I am nuts about that.  :D

I got bored so I went ahead and got the stats for both.

First, Orton.

Now, Brees.

Lots of ways to interpret this. Basically the same offense that got a bit wise and began running the ball some more. The stats don't match up, but not much of a change if you equal them out in attempts.

59% completion percentage to 61%

Probably not as many TD's or yards, but less INT's.

"On par" isn't exactly right, but close enough. Thanks for running those numbers! :D

I was a season-ticket holder in the Brees era and also watched most of Orton's games, and it was pretty obvious to me that Orton is not on the same level as Brees. Brees played on an offense that couldn't run the ball to save their lives, his defenses were terrible, and he was a stud after only one year in the system. Orton played on teams that had much better defenses (especially in '02 and '03), ran the ball a little better, and he was benched towards the end of last season for poor play.

Orton was in a much better position to win (better wideouts and MUCH better defenses), yet it was Brees who won the Big Ten and took Purdue to the Rose Bowl. Brees was put in a Peyton Manning-like position and won shootouts while operating in a complex (for college) offensive scheme. When he was drafted, there was no doubt in my mind that he would eventually become a legitimate NFL starter, as he did just about everything that was asked of him and succeeded admirably. Despite playing in an overall better situation, Orton hasn't accomplished what Brees has at the collegiate level and I have my doubts about him being a successful NFL starter.
