charty
With Dwight and Morton, this doesn't bode well for Bethel Johnson. My, how the rich get richer. Boston Herald article........... Pats land returner: Morton picks champs By Mike Reiss/ Metrowest Daily News Wednesday, June 22, 2005 - Updated: 07:16 AM EST The Patriots [stats, news] ranked 29th in punt returns last season, so the team made two free agent moves in the offseason to address that area. First wide receiver Tim Dwight. Now running back Chad Morton. The Pats reached an agreement with Morton on a one-year, $600,000 contract yesterday, according to Morton's agent, Leigh Steinberg. The deal also includes $600,000 worth of incentives. The 5-foot-8, 203-pound Morton, who turned 28 in April, was released by the Redskins on June 3 in a salary cap move. He had visits with the Giants, Vikings, Raiders and Patriots, and Steinberg said the final decision came down to the Vikings and Patriots. ``My advice to him was that 10 years ago if you could play for the 49ers or Cowboys, you ought to take it - and now that same adage is true for the Patriots,'' Steinberg said last night. ``If a player has an opportunity to play for the Patriots and they want him and a role is there, why not enjoy that experience? In the contemporary National Football League, they are the state-of-the-art franchise.'' Morton, a six-year NFL veteran who has played with the Saints (2000), Jets (2001-02) and Redskins (2003-04), had his 2004 season cut short after six games due to an ACL injury. He visited Foxboro late last week. ``He had an incredibly positive visit there and enjoyed the vision they outlined for how he might fit,'' Steinberg said. Morton has played the running back role sparingly, with 88 career carries for 360 yards (4.1-yard average). His primary impact has been in the return game, with 174 kickoff returns for 4,172 yards (24-yard average) and three touchdowns, and 79 punt returns for 710 yards (9-yard average) and no touchdowns. The Patriots averaged just 5.8 yards per punt return last season, with Kevin Faulk [news] (20) and Troy Brown [news] (12) mainly splitting duties.
