New IDP dynasty league, Need Help!

Recommended Posts

I'm drafting in a new 16 team dynasty league right now. We are through 27 or so rounds. First time IDP owner, longtime ffl player. Here is my defensive players so far. We have a 45 man roster. The 46th - 50th round is the rookie draft. You can start either a 3-4 defense or a 4-3 defense. 2de, 1dt, 3lb, 1 flex(LB,DT), 2 cb, 2 safeties. Naturally, I'm looking at going with the 3-4 most of the time.

LB

Mike Peterson

Zach Thomas

Al Wilson

Dat Nguyen

Derek M. Smith

Larry Foote

SAFETY

Sammy Knight

Sean Jones

CB

Jerry Azumah

Phillip Buchanon

DE

Adewale Ogunleye

Richard Seymour

DT

Dewayne Robertson

Albert Haynsworth

I feel like my LB crew is very solid. I feel like my DE's are weak. Who should I target at this point. Most of the top 25 guys at each position are gone. Any deep sleepers out there like they target on the offensive side of the ball. (players coming off injuries, young guys drafted high not given oppurtinity yet, etc.) Especially on the defensive line, were I feel I need the most help. You can take a look at my draft overall and give me some ideas if you want. It would be greatly appreciated. (I'm Mitch Bush) http://football.myfantasyleague.com/2005/home/74827

I have a feeling the bones are going to be picked clean. The defensive side of the ball is where I am a little (lot) weak at, as far as up and coming young talent.I know the rookies pretty well (Davis, Johnson, Thurman), just not the one and two year guys. We are in round 30 now. So I have 15 or so rounds left. I need to get some young backups on offense also, how far should I push them down the list? Guys like J Payton, J Wells, T Romo, J Sorgi etc.

Your DL isn't the only spot where you need some work as you are weak at Safety and CB as well. At this point you don't have much to work with but beggars can't be choosers. You have to forsake youth and grab players that will contribute for the next couple of years for you. You can still grab some youth. Below is my assessment of who might be worth a pick and the reasons why:

Defensive End

Derrick Burgess - DE - Raiders - Derrick has been injured each of the last 3 years so there is an issue on his ability to stay healthy. If he is able to get past this, Derrick is a good to great player. In his rookie year had an average of over 1 sack per game in the games he played. In the playoffs against the Falcons he had 2 sacks and was a key component to shutting down Vick for the Eagles. This guy is worth the chance. If he has a full year playing he could have 10+ sacks and be in the top 30 or better.

Antwan Odom or Travis Laboy or Bo Schobel - DE's - Titans - All 3 of these guys are 2nd year players and 1 or 2 of them are expected to step up. Kearse left for the Eagles last year and this year they lost Carter and Hall to FA. These guys are young and they have the opportunity. Now one or 2 of them have to step up. It might be worth taking them later in the draft.

Ty Warren - DE - Pats - Ty was drafted as a DT but was moved to DE solely because the Pats play a 3-4 Defense and he looks to be a good fit for that scheme. He is young and has promise and could be drafted later in your draft.

Linebackers

Landon Johnson - LB - Bengals - Johnson took advantage of an injury to Webster and played MLB last year for the Bengals. He led the team in tackles with 133 and it is now his job to lose coming into this year. He is entering his 2nd year and has promise. Definitely worth a pick.

James Harrison - LB - Steelers - Harrison played well on special teams and ended up playing LB towards the end of the regular season. Harrison won't start this year unless there is an injury but he is the next LB in line to play. Jackson has been a disappointment and Harrison hass passed him to be next in line to start.

Antwan Peek - LB - Texans - Peek is a speedy outside LB who is entering his 2nd year. He is slated to start on the outside and looks like he may be a rush specialist. He has plenty of upside and could be your starting LB in a year or 2. Again he is worth a pickup.

Cornerbacks

Nick Harper - CB - Colts - Harper played through injuries last year but when he was on the field he was a fairly good FF scorer. He isn't young but you would get a couple more years out of him. Your CB's aren't anything to write home about and he wouldn't be a bad addition.

Fred Smoot - CB - Vikings - With the Redskins Smoot wasn't a very good fantasy player because he WAS the shut down corner. On the Vikings this is a different story. Winfield is not only the shut down Corner but he is the hitter in this CB corp. Because of this I see Smoot being run at and I see him being tested through the air. This could be the year Smoot breaks into a solid FF CB.

Andre Dyson - CB - Seahawks - Entering his 5th year and signing a nice contract with the Seahawks makes Andre happy. Again he isn't the shut down corner here so he will be tested more often then not. That bodes well for a FF CB as points should come his way.

Safety

Tebucky Jones - S - Dolphins - Tebucky has always produced fairly well as a FF Safety and I don't see this changing. He won't get you interceptions as his coverage is mediocre at best but he is an active safety who likes to hit. You are weak at safety and he isn't a bad possibility.

Mike Minter - S - Panthers - Minter's ability is declining but as with Tebucky he will get you some decent FF points. These are points you will need with your weak DB's.

Will Allen - S - Bucs - Allen is entering his 2nd year and will be battling for the starting spot with the Bucs. I like his upside and will be worth a pickup for the future. He might even get you some points this year if he wins the job outright this year.

Lastly, since you have 4 rounds at the end of the draft for rookies...I would shoot for Davis and a DE with one of the last 4 picks. Also look to pickup a few rookies that might be able to help defensively in FA as there are certainly more then 64 rookies worth a pickup on Defense.

Jared Allen has some real potential and can get after the QB but he is battling for a starting job with Carlos Hall due to his poor show vs. the run ... I would imagine there are some better opportunities out there this year than a part time DE -- I like both what you have and Burgess better FF wise this year IMHO ... I would however grab him if you have some taxi squad rights and room available ...
