Coaching changes for 2005

Here is some interesting info on coaches which was sent to me in an automatic update email ... thought I would share ... apparently written by some guy named Norm Behrens

 

 

 

Arizona:

 

Offensive Coordinator, Keith Rowen has been reunited with Dennis Green in Arizona. With 22 years in as an NFL coach, Rowen has specifically worked with: special teams, O-Lines, RBs and TEs. He coached the offensive line for HC Green in Minnesota from 1994-1996, and helped rebuild the Oakland Raider run game with Napoleon Kaufman in 1997. Over the last 6 years Rowen has worked exclusively with Tony Gonzalez in the high-powered Kansas City Chiefs offense.

 

WR Coach, Mike Wilson will transition from TE coach position he held in 2004. Wilson played under Dennis Green in San Francisco in the late 80’s, and has worked with WR Tim Brown and the Oakland Raiders as a WR coach in 1995-96.

 

TE Coach, Carl Hargrave will take over this position from Wilson and is another name from Dennis Green’s past. Hargrave worked with Robert Smith and the Viking RBs from 1994-2000.

 

Baltimore:

 

Offensive Coordinator, Jim Fassel faced off against HC Brian Billick in Super Bowl XXXV as leader of the New York Giants, and now the two are part of the same staff trying to get the Ravens passing game on track. Fassel was a “consultant” last year – now he’s officially in charge of play-calling. Along with the 7 seasons as the Giants HC (1997-03), Fassel has worked as OC for: Denver Broncos (1993-94 with John Elway), the Oakland Raiders (1995 with Jeff Hostetler), and the Arizona Cardinals (1996 with Boomer Esiason).

 

Offensive Line Coach, Chris Foerster worked with Brian Billick (then OC) in Minnesota in 1993-95 as the Offensive Line coach. Helping lead the Vikes to the 2nd most total points scored (412) in club history. Foerster is no stranger to playoff teams having worked as O-Line Coach for the Tampa Bay Bucs (1996-01), and as TE Coach for Indianapolis (2002-03). 2004 was the forgettable year in Foerster’s career as he was unlucky enough to lead a Miami Dolphins offense riddled with injury and uncertainty.

 

QB Coach, Rick Neuheisel makes 2005 his rookie year in an NFL coaching position. Having coached 8+ years in collegiate D 1-A level (including 4 years at the University of Washington), Neuheisel will be working closely with Kyle Boller and the other young Ravens QBs. Early in his career Neuheisel spent 6 years as QB/WR coach at UCLA (1988-93) tutoring the likes of Troy Aikman and J.J. Stokes.

 

Defensive Coordinator, Rex Ryan gets promoted with the departure of Mike Nolan (to SF). Rex, the son of legendary coach Buddy Ryan, has coached the defensive line with the Ravens for 7 seasons and has seen continual improvement over that time.

 

Defensive Line Coach, Clarence Brooks replaces the promoted Rex Ryan. Brooks brings 12 years NFL experience coaching the D-line with teams like: Chicago (1993-98), Cleveland (1999), and Miami (2000-04).

 

Chicago:

 

Offensive Coordinator, Ron Turner (brother of Oakland’s Norv Turner) returns to the Windy City after spending the last 8 seasons head coaching the University of Illinois. Turner’s NFL career actually started with the Chicago OC position (1993-96) where he helped lead the Bears to their last postseason victory. Turner has emphasis on a hard running game to balance out an aerial attack, but will need marked improvement from all his offensive talent (and a healthy Rex Grossman) to make 2005 memorable.

 

Offensive Line Coach, Harry Hiestand comes to Chicago having worked with the new OC Ron Tuner at the University of Illinois. Hiestand makes his debut as an NFL coach with a Bear offense that lead the league last season with 66 sacks allowed.

 

Defensive Line Coach, Don Johnson is new to the NFL ranks of coaching but has contributed to many teams on the collegiate level, most recently at UCLA.

 

Defensive Backs Coach, Perry Fewell is reunited with Lovie Smith from when the two coached together for the St. Louis Rams. In 2003, HC Smith was the defensive coordinator and Fewell was the secondary coach working with the talented Aeneas Williams.

 

Cincinnati:

 

Defensive Coordinator, Chuck Bresnahan has been promoted to lead the Bengal defense. Bresnahan’s NFL experience starts with coaching defensive backs in Cleveland (1994-95), in Indianapolis (1996-97), and in Oakland (1998-99) – before taking over as Raiders defensive coordinator (2000-03), during which time Oakland won three straight AFC West titles.

 

Cleveland:

 

Head Coach, Romeo Crennel has the NFL experience that the Cleveland Browns need in this position. With 24 seasons, and 6 Super Bowl visits, and 5 of those as part of the victorious staff – there’s little doubt as to what he brings to the table. A tough defensive-minded coach who also DC’d in Cleveland under current Patriots HC Bill Belichick. Crennel’s history before the recent New England dynasty was as a defensive line coach for the New York Jets and New York Giants.

 

Offensive Coordinator, Maurice Carthon worked on the same staff as Crennel as the RB coach for the New York Jets in 1997-99, as well as the New England Patriots (1994-96), both under the tutelage of HC Bill Parcells. Carthon’s last job also happened to be with Parcells, developing his skills as offensive coordinator in Dallas. Offensive Line Coach, Jeff Davidson joins the Browns staff after 8 successful seasons working as offensive line coach or TE coach with the Patriots.

 

Wide Receiver Coach, Terry Robiskie steps back from the OC position he held in 2004 to coach the wide receivers for the Browns. Robiskie has 23 years experience coaching NFL players starting with the LA Raiders (1982-93), to Washington Redskins (1994-00), to the Browns (2001 to present).

 

Tight Ends Coach, Ben Coates worked around Romeo Crennel as an All-Pro TE in New England. Coates spent last season working with Jason Witten of the Dallas Cowboys.

 

Defensive Coordinator, Todd Grantham joins the Cleveland Browns with 6 years of defensive line coaching for the Indianapolis Colts (1999-01) and the Houston Texans (2002-04).

 

Defensive Line Coach, Randy Melvin returns to NFL coaching after spending the last three seasons coaching the defensive line at Rutgers. Melvin last worked in the NFL coaching the D-line in New England.

 

Detroit:

 

Offensive Coordinator, Ted Tollner reunites with HC Steve Mariucci to help lead the Lions in 2005. Tollner has spent the last 3 seasons with the San Francisco 49ers where he coached current Lions “backup” QB Jeff Garcia to 3 Pro Bowls. Along with many years coaching at the collegiate level (San Diego State 1994-01), Tollner has also had worked as wide receivers coach under Buffalo Bills HC Marv Levy in the late 1980’s.

 

Wide Receivers Coach, Fred Graves comes to the Detroit Lions with 4 years coaching at the NFL level working as WR coach in Buffalo (2001-03) and Cleveland (2004).

 

Linebackers Coach, Johnny Holland has been promoted to coach the young linebacker corps of the Detroit Lions. Holland has experience with Green Bay (1999) and Seattle (2001-02) in the same role.

 

Green Bay:

 

Running Backs Coach, Edgar Bennett has been promoted from player development to coach the running backs of the Green Bay Packers. This is Bennett’s first NFL coaching experience, and he’s best known as the leading rusher of the Packer’s 1996 Super Bowl team.

 

Wide Receiver Coach, James Franklin has 11 seasons of WR coaching experience, as well as minority internship roles with the Miami Dolphins (1998) and Philadelphia Eagles (1999).

 

Defensive Coordinator, Jim Bates comes to Green Bay with 15 years coaching experience in the NFL. He’s worked defenses for the Dolphins (2000-04), the Cowboys (1996-99), and was brought in to the NFL by Bill Belichick to coach the linebackers for the Cleveland Browns in 1991.

 

Defensive Line Coach, Bob Sanders comes to Green Bay with Jim Bates from the Miami Dolphins. Sanders has 15 years experience coaching collegiate defensive ends (Florida, Duke, Georgia Tech, to name a few), and 4 years at the professional level (Miami).

 

Jacksonville:

 

Offensive Coordinator, Carl Smith has been a NFL QB tutor for years and has logged coaching hours with Cleveland (2001-03), New England (1997-99), and the New Orleans Saints from 1986 to 1996. Beginning his career with the Saints allowed him to meet HC Jack Del Rio, who was the linebacker coach for New Orleans in ’86, as well as current Jaguars WR coach Steve Walters, who Smith worked with in New Orleans too.

 

Running Backs Coach, Kennedy Pola was RB coach for the Cleveland Browns in 2004 after teaching the likes of Justin Fargas (2002) and then freshman LenDale White (2003) during a 4-year stay at USC.

 

Wide Receivers Coach, Steve Walters has worked the last 6 seasons with Derrick Mason and the Titans wide receivers, and had previously worked with current Jaguar OC Carl Smith in New Orleans (1986-96) mentoring Eric Martin, Quinn Early and Floyd Turner.

 

Defensive Secondary Coach, Dave Campo brings 18 years of NFL experience to the Jaguars after spending the last two seasons as defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns and HC of the Dallas Cowboys from 2000-02.

 

Miami:

 

Head Coach, Nick Saban has just 5 years NFL coaching experience as Secondary coach for the 1988 Houston Oilers (under Jerry Glanville), and as defensive coordinator for Bill Belichick in Cleveland. But Saban’s 92-42-1 record as a collegiate HC (and National Championship at LSU) speaks volumes about his leadership ability. The Miami Dolphins are in need of a major overhaul and Saban’s in charge of every aspect.

 

Offensive Coordinator, Scott Linehan crafted the #1 and #2 ranked total offense in Minnesota in 2002 and 2003. With only 3 years of NFL coaching experience Linehan will be hard pressed to get the 2005 Miami Dolphins working in a balanced attack that has earned him such high marks.

 

Wide Receivers Coach, Charlie Baggett has 8 seasons in as an NFL WR coach, most recently with Randy Moss and the Vikings from 2000 to 2004. Baggett also tutored Antonio Freeman in Green Bay in 1999 and Haywood Jeffires and Webster Slaughter with the Houston Oilers from 1993-94. Baggett held the same role under HC Nick Saban from 1995-98 at Michigan State.

 

Quarterback Coach, Jason Garrett played for years behind Troy Aikman in Dallas – and had experience with the New York Giants, the Tampa Bay Bucs, as well as in the CFL and World League.

 

Offensive Line Coach, Hudson Houck has 22 years experience coaching NFL linemen. The last 3 seasons (2002-04) he’s spent improving the play of the San Diego Chargers. Before that he led the famous O-lines in Dallas (1993-01) and the Los Angeles Rams (1983-91).

 

Defensive Coordinator, Richard Smith has 17 years as an NFL assistant coach. He started his career with 5 seasons in the Houston Oilers organization where he was introduced to HC Saban in 1988. Smith spent the last two seasons coaching the Detroit Lions linebackers.

 

Minnesota:

 

Offensive Coordinator, Steve Loney gets promoted from Offensive Line coach after working 4 seasons under Scott Linehan (now in Miami).

 

Quarterback Coach, Rich Olson enters his first season of coaching with the Vikings after the QB coach job in San Francisco last year. Olson also guided Brad Johnson’s resurgence in Washington (1999-00), and Jon Kitna’s underrated tenure in Seattle (1995-98).

 

Wide Receiver Coach, Wes Chandler has 3 years NFL coaching experience with the Dallas Cowboys (2000-02), and has 7 years coaching NFL Europe teams.

 

New England:

 

Defensive Coordinator, Eric Mangini has been promoted from Defensive Backs coach after 5 years. Mangini has 10 years NFL coaching experience with 9 of those working with Bill Belichick: 1995 in Cleveland, 1997-99 as part of the New York Jets staff, and 2000-04 in New England.

 

New Orleans:

 

Offensive Coordinator, Mike Sheppard has been promoted from the QB coach position he held with the Saints (2002-04). Sheppard has groomed QBs for Buffalo (2001) and Seattle (1999-00). He last worked as OC for the Chargers from 1997-98.

 

Running Backs Coach, Johnny Roland has many years coaching some of the NFL’s finest running backs: Ahman Green, Emmit Smith, Jerome Bettis, and of course, 10 seasons with the Chicago Bears working Walter Payton.

 

New York Jets:

 

Offensive Coordinator, Mike Heimerdinger has 10 years experience as an NFL coach. From 2000-04 he was OC for the Tennessee Titans and developed Steve McNair and Derrick Mason into stars. Before that, Heimerdinger spent 5 seasons as WR coach for the Denver Broncos working with Ed McCaffrey and Rod Smith.

 

San Francisco:

 

Head Coach, Mike Nolan joins the 49ers staff after 18 years NFL coaching experience focusing on the defensive side of the game. Nolan had full command of Baltimore’s defense (2002-04), the New York Jets (2000), Washington (1997-99), and the New York Giants (1993-96).

 

Offensive Coordinator, Mike McCarthy comes to San Francisco after 5 seasons as OC in New Orleans. Prior to that, McCarthy has worked as QB coach in Green Bay (1999), and with the Kansas City Chiefs (1993-98) as a QB coach and Offensive assistant.

 

Offensive Line Coach, George Warhop has 9 years NFL coaching experience working as OL coach for the Dallas Cowboys (2003-04), Arizona Cardinals (1998-02), and as an Offensive assistant for the St. Louis Rams in 1997.

 

Running Back Coach, Bishop Harris has been working with running backs in the NFL ranks for over a decade. Harris worked with Curtis Martin (NYJ) from 2001 to 2004, plus he was RB coach in Buffalo, Oakland, and Denver since 1993.

 

Defensive Coordinator, Billy Davis has 13 seasons as an NFL coach with some success in the 3-4 defenses that HC Mike Nolan plans to implement here. In 2004 Davis was LB coach for the New York Giants and held the same position under Wade Phillips in Atlanta (2001-03). Davis has also worked 4 seasons in Carolina working as the Outside Linebackers coach for Dom Capers.

 

Linebacker Coach, Mike Singletary is a Hall of Fame linebacker entering his 3rd season of NFL coaching. Singletary comes with Nolan from the Baltimore Ravens where he coached the linebackers from 2003 to 2004.

 

Tennessee:

 

Offensive Coordinator, Norm Chow has 32 years coaching experience at the collegiate level. He’s mentored All-Americans from BYU (1973-99), North Carolina State (2000), and Southern California (2001-04). He’s helped win three National Championships and worked with 3 Heisman Trophy winners.

 

Wide Receivers Coach, Ray Sherman starts his 18th season coaching in the NFL replacing Steve Walters who accepted the same job with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Sherman spent the last 5 seasons in Green Bay coaching Wide Receivers and has held Offensive Coordinator/QB/WR/RB coaching positions with many other teams.
