BeeR
Mississippi BurningFlatliners ?? These are underrated? Â Â The Mothman Prophecies Not a "great" movie but yeah - good in a sort of thriller/"supernatural" kinda way - and yeah it was based on true events. weird. Â Â I just thought of another movie.... Time Bandits Excellent call. Very colorful/fun movie and classic Gilliam. Loved the ending. Â Â Malice ? That was underrated too? I thought it was well thought of. Great flick. Â Â Â "Night of the Comet" was definitely an era film (Valley Girls) but worth a watch. Pretty hokey B movie but still a fun watch also IMO. ("look - here's chuck" *pour*)Â Also there was a movie, I think called "Sleuth" where 2 guys took turns messing w/each other's heads (in an "OMG I can't believe you did that" kind of way), and the stakes get higher and higher.... myhousekey
"The Game" Freaken LOVE that movie.  That's the one I was going to suggest. Great flick.  River's Edge  "The only reason you stay here is so you can f**k my mother and eat her food. MOTHERF**KER. FOOD EATER. Chavez
Offhand my list includes Tequila Sunrise Quiz Show Memento These are all pretty f'in good.  Most of Eastwood's "no name" type westerns, esp if you count Josy Wales I dunno man, I think the Leone westerns and The Outlaw Josey Wales are all rated pretty highly. Chavez
Blow Out with Travolta, yes John Travolta, early nineties? Nineties? Â Try about 1980.
Chavez
Not sure how a movie considered by many to be an all-time classic makes this list but I'm certainly not going to argue against it being great. I think The Man Who Would Be King is revered by cinephiles but kinda just falls through the cracks when people think of "great movies" - though it's absolutely fantastic. Â I've kinda fallen in love with Twelve O'Clock High as of late, but I don't know if that's underrated, forgotten, or if everyone (even the Germans!) weeps tears of joy at the mere mention of its name. Chavez
I saw that in my film class in college. Gene Hackman is in every movie ever made. No, no, no - it's the Caine/Hackman theory - a film starring either Caine or Hackman is on at any given time, culminating with A Bridge Too Far...fortunately they didn't share any scenes or I believe the universe would have imploded. millerx
Arlington Road I can watch it anytime...truly one my favorites of all-time. very good call!  A great list is being compiled. So as not to be too redundant, I would add these:  The Duel (I think Spielberg's first?) Tremors (although it gets played more now) Frequency Pale Rider (an older Eastwood western) Edited January 21, 2009 by millerx
Chavez
Does Galipoli count as underrated? I'd think so.

Chavez
Okay, those last 2 posts were just spitballin'...my underrated list of English-language films, removing films that have already been mentioned by other Huddlers::  Zulu - another Caine movie, based on a true story - thousands of Zulu warriors attack a British outpost  Short Cuts - Altman-directed anthology of Raymond Carver stories. GREAT stuff, criminally underseen.  The Salton Sea - noirish Val Kilmer flick about meth-heads  Roger Dodger - Campbell Scott as a sleazy ad exec who thinks he's a ladies man  Miller's Crossing - we all love the Coens, but in their film ouevre, this one slips through the cracks of Fargo, Raising Arizona, O Brother... and The Big Lebowski - and it's as good as ANY of them. skylive5
Well, I have read through all the lists and I must say I am a bit surprised that the most underrated movie of all time is not listed by any of you. It boggles the mind that that is so.   Attack of the Killer Tomatoes  And absolutely outstanding flick that just seems to never make any list of movies one should see at least once a year. Chavez
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes And absolutely outstanding flick that just seems to never make any list of movies one should see at least once a year. That movie is rated exactly where it should be - it is an attempt to make the most cheez-bomb film ever, and it largely succeeds. It probably remains The Worst Film Ever Made (Intentional Category), but due to the rise of Bay/Bruckheimer beast, it has no doubt fallen in the overall classification. Chargerz
Minority Report (I know the critics liked this film, out so many of the people I talk to dislike it. IMO one of the best Speilberg directed movies) I agree. I thought this film was very well done.
BeeR
I dunno man, I think the Leone westerns and The Outlaw Josey Wales are all rated pretty highly. Â Are they? I guess it depends if we're talking popular vs critics vs a more general impression. I know they have a loyal following among Clint fans, but didn't think they were generally well thought of. Â nah, it really doesn't depend. any way you slice it those movies are classics. cult following, general public perception, critical acclaim. the only thing you could maybe say is that they weren't universally well-received when they first came out in the 60s, and spaghetti western was a pejorative term. but for the last 30 years, yeah there is pretty much no sensible way to call them "underrated". Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine - totally brilliant. Â Zulu - another Caine movie, based on a true story - thousands of Zulu warriors attack a British outpost Rorke's Drift was the battle, which followed Isandlwhana, an absolute massacre of a British brigade by the Zulus. Great movie - seen it a dozen times. Like Az said, if it depends on whether we're talking popular, critics, general impression, or Clint fans, those movies are 4 for 4. Â I don't generally like the term "over/underrated" because it's all dependent on who's doing the rating. It's very nebulous. Â On another board, I had to bring the knowledge to some foo who tried to pass off a 3 million selling album as "forgotten."
