Moore to start with Bennett hurt

Vikings coach Mike Tice said Michael Bennett will sit out Friday’s game against San Diego with a slightly sprained neck. The move is more precautionary as the team does not want to risk its No. 1 back in a preseason game. Bennett did not practice on Monday.

But Bennett’s absence opens the door for Mewelde Moore to start at tailback. Moore has also returned kicks during the preseason, but will likely see very limited duty in that role as the starter in the backfield. That move will give Ryan Hoag an opportunity to contribute even more on special teams.

Pain in the neck

Plenty of items of interest from Mike Tice’s chat with the media today:

- Running back Michael Bennett sprained his neck Friday against the Jets. Bennett did not participate in today’s early practice (it was more of a walk-through) and Tice didn’t sound as if he expects the team’s No. 1 running back to play Friday against San Diego at the Metrodome. Tice said Mewelde Moore will get the start but made it clear Bennett remains atop the depth chart.

Most Viking fans believe MM is the better back. Now he has his chance again to showcase his talent.

Sounds like a lame excuse to see how Moore fares against starting DEFs, while allowing Bennett to save a little face.

lol - interesting theory. Could be.

Cmon Bennett, just sprain your earlobe or whatever so I can take advantage of drafting Moore....

Oh, a completely unsubstantiated theory. 100% :D But its not *that* crazy to think that someone finally convinced Tice to at least take a look at Moore against a starting DEF during the preseason. Okay, maybe its a littel "out there" to assume the neck injury was a harmless, pretextual excuse for starting Moore. But not totally.
