There have been some trades over the past few weeks in which players have been traded for draft picks. I thought that at some point, the league had outlawed trading players for draft picks, but wasn't sure. So I did some research and came up with the following:
http://forums.thehuddle.com/index.php?showtopic=34151I think we should revisit this policy (or lack of policy) so that we can get things straight going forward and firm up the rules for future reference.
well, for one thing, that thread is from 4 years ago, when we were severely limited in this respect strictly because we were running the league through yahoo.
i know we have also allowed actual player-for-pick trades in seasons past, with no objections from anyone. we've never voted explicitly to allow them, but we've certainly never voted to disallow them either, and we have, in fact, allowed them -- which sorta seals the deal. so i think it's a no-brainer that any from this season are allowed to go through.
you're right though that it should be clarified and spelled out in the rules exactly what can and can't be traded. I would say we should make picks for "the next upcoming season" tradeable. in other words, before the 2007 draft, 2007 picks are tradeable. during the 2007 season and up until the 2008 draft, 2008 picks are tradeable. i think this would reflect what has essentially been an unwritten rule in the league for at least the past couple of seasons.
