There have been some trades over the past few weeks in which players have been traded for draft picks. I thought that at some point, the league had outlawed trading players for draft picks, but wasn't sure. So I did some research and came up with the following:

trades are a little complicated, because we havent had pre-draft trades before and don't have any specific rules for them. my feeling is...trades of players straight up for other players (1-for-1, 2-for-2, etc.), either before the keeper deadline (from your whole roster) or after (from your keepers) is fine. i'm against allowing players-for-picks trades, just because it really complicates things.

I think we should revisit this policy (or lack of policy) so that we can get things straight going forward and firm up the rules for future reference.

well, for one thing, that thread is from 4 years ago, when we were severely limited in this respect strictly because we were running the league through yahoo.

i know we have also allowed actual player-for-pick trades in seasons past, with no objections from anyone. we've never voted explicitly to allow them, but we've certainly never voted to disallow them either, and we have, in fact, allowed them -- which sorta seals the deal. so i think it's a no-brainer that any from this season are allowed to go through.

you're right though that it should be clarified and spelled out in the rules exactly what can and can't be traded. I would say we should make picks for "the next upcoming season" tradeable. in other words, before the 2007 draft, 2007 picks are tradeable. during the 2007 season and up until the 2008 draft, 2008 picks are tradeable. i think this would reflect what has essentially been an unwritten rule in the league for at least the past couple of seasons.

FWIW, trading picks for an upcoming season needs to be contingent on dues for said upcoming season having been paid, IMO. Just in case someone bails.

Your call but it might be a useful safety net.

Also, as a relative newcomer, I think it would be helpful to consolidate all of the league rules into a single pinned thread.

And we just instituted this rule in DOH, future (1 year) draft picks may be traded but the following year's dues must be paid before the trade will be processed.

Yep -- no-brainer.

Too new to this league to voice too much opinion, but if it were put to a vote, I'd vote against trading future year draft picks. A bad team can tank the year, bolstering a team in a playoff run. It's just a bad idea in playing the game, as I'll draft to play this year against teams drafted this year, and could lose just because someone decides to tank next year in exchange for a SB win this year... it's sorta cheating. Draft picks are ok as long as it's before the draft in that year IMO.
