Full Version: The Off Season....what off season?

Several things will go down this weekend, primarily:the division realignment will take place.

The 3 Division winners:

Hammer of the Gods
The Color Purple
Hurricane Lombardi

are defending the Dutch Clark, Indian Packing Company amd Winter Park divisions respectively. As Division Winners, you 3 are allowed to rename your division to your liking. Homerism, as in mandatory.

Secondly, although roster moves were frozen after Week 15, I think everyone should understand they were frozen for PICKUPS and NOT to prevent IR moves. I inadvertently set the site to freeze ALL moves so I will create roster space for those of you who have players on the IR still on the active roster.

That brings up a secondary point: when do these guys get pulled from the IR? Just on my team: Delhomme is hoping to BEGIN throwing in a month, and Irons hopes to begin running in JULY. Clearly, this will have to be a case by case basis, but for the time being it appears that players IR'ed in 2008 are pretty much still in that status.

Other things we need to decide:

1. No free agent pickups after kickoff of the first game of the week (regardless of day).
2. Starting lineups allowed to be changed until kickoff of each players game.

These two suggestions started a bunch of talk so they'll definitely be put to a vote.

Two other things I can think of are this: dealing with the Taxi Squad in the off-season, and the off-season schedule itself.

Regarding the Taxi Squad, this was approved in our rules last year:

http://forums.thehuddle.com/index.php?s=&a...t&p=2007393 :

QUOTE
10.2.2 2007 to 2008: Draft orders will be based on 2007 results. One week prior to the 2008 rookie draft, taxi squads are locked and cuts and/or promotions will need to be made if any franchise wants to make more room on their taxi squad. These can be made at any point during the off-season. Prior to the 2008 Veteran Draft, all Norris franchise rosters must be cut to meet a total of 9 to 11 players on the franchise's roster.

Example: Ditka's Demons during the 2007 season elevated 2 of his 7 taxi squad player's to his roster. He traded a third player to Titletown's taxi squad. This leaves him at least 3 spots to draft NFL rookies onto his taxi squad. Of his roster of 18, he decides to cut his 2 PK's outright and elevates 2 more taxi squad players to his roster. He is now able to participate in 5 rounds of the Rookie Draft, bringing his taxi squad total back up to 7. Then, prior to the Veteran draft he selects 10 players to keep (one under the max) but he has ZERO obligation to keep the 2 players he elevated from his taxi squad earlier in the year.

Here are some of the votes. Look closely at link #’s 2 & 4.

That's actually kind of vague, but given that Taxi Squads were new last year, we didn't have a handle on them long term. That's something we need to address.

So, votes on roster deadlines, weekly free-agent cutoffs, IR tracking/definitions and Taxi Squads.

The final discussion is the final off-season schedule.

Last year our off-season moves went like this:

QUOTE
1 - Scrub Draft end of April 07 – same week as NFL rookie Draft.

2 - Rookie Draft on Monday, June 18 2007 (I think we had travel conflicts that pushed it into June, many had wanted end of May).

3 - Vet Draft was in mid August, after July 31st 2007 cuts to 4-6 keepers.

4 - promotions and further trims to meet the 18 active and 10 taxi player limits for the first game of the 2007 year on Thursday night.

I see no reason why we shouldn’t do this again, assuming, of course, some type of Srcub Draft takes place.

This year, Labor Day is on Monday, September 1st this year. The Kickoff Game is Sept 4th. It would seems like we should start the Vet Draft around August 18th. We might actually be able to do it later on the 25th, given that it's only going to be around 9 rounds. We should be able to get through that in 2-3 days, especially given the crop of players we'll be sifting through.

We should be able to wrap this up in 2-3 weeks, leaving more than a month before any potential round of player pickups. Let's say we'll have all votes by Friday, March 21st.

Sorry for the long winded post, but there's no rest for the Dynastic Owners. Fer cryin out loud, the Pro Bowl was weeks ago!

Regarding this rule...

I think it is VERY important to make this following change so that we aren't actually making Taxi Squad cuts and promotions until we've done everything else. So basically, during the off-season the size of our Taxi Squad is kind of in limbo. From an earlier thread...

QUOTE(Savage Beatings @ 12/1/07 11:42am) *
I agree, and want to emphasize... very important... I think that we shouldn't have to make our cuts and/or promote anyone to our active rosters, until AFTER we have declared our keepers for next season and AFTER we have done the Vet draft.

So the order of events should be something like this...

1) Scrub Draft (are we doing another one of these?)
2) Rookie Draft (all players go onto your Taxi Squad which is temporarily expanded to fit all current Taxi Squad players plus all new rookies/scrubs)
3) Declare Keepers (all non-kept players go back into the pool for the Vet Draft)
4) Veteran Draft
5) Promotions & Final Cuts (Taxi Squad must be brought back down to 10 players at this point)

I think that this particular sequence of events is very important... it allows you the greatest amount of freedom at each step of the way, to evaluate the talent of the players on your roster, and then to devise a strategy for which players to go after in the next step.

QUOTE(Pope Flick @ 12/1/07 11:28pm) *
Unless I'm mistaken, this is the order last off-season went and I dont see any reason to adjust THAT. Hell, it seems we can boil this down pretty quick: we keep last year's set of rules. We only need to decide how many spots to expand the TS by (14 was based on last year's 7 Rd Scrub and 7 Rd Rook draft) and whther or not to do a scrub draft again. If it does happen, I can't see it going 7 rounds again, but I digress.

QUOTE(CaP'N GRuNGe @ 12/1/07 11:42pm) *
I agree with all of this, plus I don't think we need to go through the effort of a scrub draft.

Wurd.
