Full Version: END THIS DRAFT!

I can't express enough how unfair I think this draft is. These are supposed to be supplemental picks meant to fill out rosters. The rest of us are powerless to stop it. We are at a disadvantage just because we have 20 players.

All the teams still picking are taking their time, gathering more information from the league as it's released. While we sit back and watch it happen. That is EXTREMELY unfair. What happens if a stud blows a knee during OTA's this week? Who's going to get the replacement? Is it fair that only some owners have that chance?

I was going to wait until the draft was over before raising a stink because this is the way it's set up this year, but this has gone on long enough.

I won't even get into how unfair it is that a trade was made for picks back in the fall, and now the owner who gave up those picks actually gets handed a make up pick AND gets access to info that I can't use to choose a player.

End this draft today. I won't play in a league that is not fair to all involved.

Eric,

I hear you. From the conversations I've had with you and other owners on this topic over the past week I expected to address this issue after the draft. Since we all entered this year with the rules in place, however, I cannot summarily end the draft today. I can (as I have been doing since the draft started) try to move the draft along as fast as possible and then take care of the problem once the draft is concluded.

There are several simple solutions to this situation, including lessening the time clock for draft picks, awarded a defense to an owner instead of skipping his pick, etc.

We'll discuss this more I'm sure.

The Hammer
I agree with Eric this draft should be long over by now. The 24 hour clock should be down to 1 hour per pick by the time the supplemental picks come out. I place no blame on Matt and realize how hard he works to keep this thing moving, but as pointed out it is unfair to eliminate teams from the draft once they reach a twenty man roster. The right option would have been to have all the teams draft until all the teams had a minimum twenty players and those greater than twenty would cut down to twenty man rosters. The point being lets end this debactle by putting a freeze on trading picks and reducing the time limit to an hour starting tomorrow and wrapping this thing up asap. If not the other teams should be allowed to pick as well.

Sorry but I disagree. I am new to Dynasty leagues so when I joined I looked at the rules carefully and asked questions about supplemental picks last year. I purposely signed players to 1 year contracts so that I would have multiple picks (beyond 5).

The only thing that I would change however is the start of the draft. I would prefer to see it start in August and limit the amount of time people have to make picks.

Eric is the man, but I also disagree here with him. After looking at his roster, I see he passed out some bad contracts to guys like Jacoby Jones, M. Muhammed, Dem Williams. Watching this draft slowly move along is a small punishment for risking 2 year contracts on unproven players. If these guys had turned out to be studs, I would think that Eric would not be complaining, and maybe I would...haha. I wouldnt mind moving the draft along anyways, I do agree with that. We should vote next year to get together for a supplemental draft.

Does anyone not understand how much of an advantage this suppplemental draft is for the players in it?

One owner is apparently bored. Another is throwing jabs at previous contracts he feels are bad.

Kudos to Carlos for appartently reading and understanding the rules better than anyone else. Keep searching out those loop holes, I'm sure there are more! Johnnie Cochran, Robert Shapiro, and F. Lee Bailey would have been proud.

My team stinks. I admit it. But I'm doing all I can to improve it within the rules and with a reasonable amount of integrity. Without a solid, fair league, my crappy squad becomes irrelevant. My first thoughts are always to make sure the leagues I play in are run and played with honor and integrity. It's the only way the lague will be fun and succeed.

So, wake up, focus on the problem, and let's get this fixed before this league folds.

All leagues go through growing pains... this is just one of them; just so everybody knows, we have three good deputy commissioners each of whom has already made recommendations on how to address this issue... we'll work this out;

Besides this issue, there's more things I'd like the league to discuss, such as expansion... as of today, we have two good owners who want to join the league... right now we have no framework in place to expand so I'd like to hear everybody's thoughts on the issue.... when the time is right I'll post a new topic on the issue so we can discuss it;

I think next year we should have an internet supplemental draft that is done with one sitting. Just like a normal draft... As far as this being unfair, there are things that could have happened during ota's and things like that, but for the most part we got lucky and have avoided that, and we should make sure to fix it before next year. If with these extra picks I have, I draft a player like John Carlson and give a 3 year deal and he sucks his whole career than what kind of bonus pick was it really? I will be forced now with so many picks to make too many decisions and it could go either way for me.Should my team be punished because I gave out less contact years than other teams...NO. By holding on to less talent for longer years i am able to pick up more this year, but that could be good or bad. I only bring up players that are bad who have been given longer contracts because that is mostly on the owner. For example, I have cadillac for 3 more years, and I wish I could just drop him, but I am stuck. I also gave lots of years to guys like brady and fitzgerald cause I thought like cadillac that they would be good. Out of those 3 I am 2 for 3. If this is a legacy league than some people will have bad teams over stretches of years, but they will be rewarded with top picks and eventually be able to draft a brady and give him a nice contract. With my extra picks I am getting guys like amani toomer and backup tight ends, I could care less and would rather not pick at all from this point on, but the rules state I should have 20. I would gladly trade my last 3 picks for guys on other rosters, but they keep those guys because they decided to give them contracts. The guys were drafting now are bums and unproven....I would have loved to had a top 3 pick and gotten Ryan Grant, but I was 4th and missed out on the proven talent and got stuck with a rookie back, but I know that it is what it is. I dont want to argue here, but I think we can fix it for the following year.

well said Ted...

One last thing for this discussion.... if we are going to change rules I want to know before I pass out new contracts, because if we do it Eric's way, I am going to give the max years to all my players and keep them from entering draft pool while I still have the same picks as others and will end up with 30 players. If we do it the way we have now, than I will give lesser contracts out and hope that the guys I hand out small deals to, do not pan out to be superstars and I will have my draft picks reloaded.
Agent Orange
Ugh. I'm not arguing the point that Carlos read the rules and understood them better than anyone else ( thereby putting more players on one year deals ). The point is what is happening RIGHT NOW! Carlos has the only picks available in the draft. Which by fault of Matt for not being a supercomputer and coming up with every possible scenerio for pushing the envelope, has put the league in a precarious position.

Carlos, make your picks. You have your choice of ALL available players in the league and no one can stop you. You know the intention of the rules was to end the draft as quick as possible with the last player picking no later than 24 hours after the next to last pick. It doesn't say that, but you know that is the meaning.

I've been playing fantasy football for 20 years now, most with many of the owners in this league. We've seen all sorts of people try to skirt the rules. We learn, create a new rule and move on. Congrats. Welcome to "The Carlos Rule". We will learn and move on. I will move on with a crappy team, but with my dignity, my ethics and my morals. I will share this league with my 15 year old son and explain to him why my team stinks, but also why I don't like what's taking place. Sportsmanship, integrity, being a man that will look you in the eye, those are the things that matter and are sweeter when you win.

Sit down with your son, Carlos, and do the same. And look him in the eye.

This has gone on long enough - loop holes or no loop holes. Eric's rule change proposal is actually too lenient in my eyes, but for the sake of getting this draft done I will definitely vote YES.

Abuse in any league should be dealt with swiftly and strongly. Would recommend a reprimand and the second offense is expulsion. That is, abuse period - not just for Carlos.

Would also propose an ammendment that after the 20 days is up ($50/day X 20) - filling out the roster with the worst defenses, kickers or TE's depending on the team's situation (not the best as previously mentioned by other owners).

As an owner you have the responsibility to do the right thing.

For the sake of rising blood pressure, I will leave it at that...

I have been unavailable until today and just made my last two picks. Didn't realize this would cause such an uproar and people thinking I'm cheating and even making suggestions on how to raise my kid ( thanks for the advice). I am curious as to which of my last 5 picks everyone was so worried about ( Indi D, TB D, Brodie Croyle, Chris Parry, Jacob Hester or Shaun Suisham)?

Again, when I drafted I signed many players to 1 year contracts so that I could have multiple picks and yes if a stud got hurt in preseason I would have a shot at picking up the backup ( if still available). The chances of that happening however are very slim but one I decided to take. What did I give up? I signed players like Jerry Porter, Jeff Garcia, David Garrard and Ben Watson to 1 year deals. Look at my last 5 picks and the players I signed to 1 year deals which ones would you rather have?

Many of you think that what I did was "unfair" and a "loophole" in the rules. I could make the same argument about teams that currently have more than 20 players on their roster. One team has 24 "players" is that fair? ....Sure it is because the RULES allow it.

Regardless, I made the picks and ended the draft. The rule everyone is voting on is BULLpoopy. I have no problem if we make that part of the rules but the fact that people were trying to make it effective in 2008 is TOTAL BULLpoopy.

The point was not who was previously on your team, or who you actually picked, or any othe BULLpoopey you're trying to spread through the league to take the heat off your BULLtooshy.

If we thought you were cheating, you'd be out of the league. We DO, however, think you used the rules, or lack there of, to an excessive advantage. The odds of those picks making a difference were long, but the precedent you were setting was detrimental to the league. On top of that was your outright lack of sportsmanship and disregard for general fair play.

Don't try to spin your BULLpoopey, making yourself into a martyr. You were available, you did intend on taking advantage of a loophole, and you would have held those picks until August if we didn't step in.

I'm willing to bet no fantasy league, in any sport, since the start of time, has allowed one team an extra week (much less six weeks you would have taken) to make picks while the rest of the league watches. The rule change was needed, will pass, and will be in effect come next years' draft.

"The Carlos Rule" est. 2008

Now let's get to the game.

Hey Orange,

ted@cava
Thats why I dont have kids, I can cheat and dont have to answer to anyone...hahah. I am kidding. I hope this gets resolved, its a good league and gives me something to do in june/july. We should take a hard look at all the rules before september and make sure we offer the commish our ideas and let him bring votes to fruition. I think teams holding their own votes is not good for the league. Why dont we actually make an effore to come together for a couple hours for a supplemental draft. This will allow teams to meet each other and talk trades, rather than the same teams trading over and over because they know each other better than other guys do.
