WOW, i've been gone from TheHuddle so long i did not know there was a forum for photography ... very cool. I storm chase and have just this year tried to get better photos. I'm learning ... slowly. I have a Nikon D40 and my main focus after a few tornados is lightning at night. I've taken a lot of photos of storms this year but if you look at my blog linked below you will see a few photos. I have more on my facebook account.

Link to my blog with a few photos.

I also have a youtube that shows video of some tornados i shot this year if interested.
Link to my YouTune channel if interested

I'll check out the post on this forum and hopefully i learn something to get better.

I actually shot a few of some dairy cows by Garden City KS that got hit by a tornado. Sheet metal was all over the place and the tornado threw the metal into the cows cutting them up very badly. Over 100 kills were killed or had to be put down ... very sad to see.

Storm chasing kicks ass ... i love it ... but you see people and/or things at their worst sometimes.

Excellent!! This is one of my retirement dreams -- leave the safety of Vermont and spend a season in storm country chasing the incredible. Looking forward to it!

Awesome pics. I especially like the lightning photos. So, your homework for tonight is to enlighten us laymen on what exactly is lightning and what triggers it? Why more in some areas than others? TIA.

Hobby ... not yet.

Photographing lightning is about as hard as catching it in a bottle. What's your secret/settings/techniques/lenses/etc.? Inquiring minds want to know.....
BTW, absolutely fantastic shots. Are you shooting in RAW?

You just got an 'F' in photo terminology.

i was just checking the Gear List thread and noticed you didnt list your gear....would love to know what you are shooting with.

oh and you really need to try and shoot RAW...RR was the one that got me to finally convert and man I dont know how or why I ever shot any other way(I actually shoot jpeg/raw but still)

RAW gives you more editing options correct?

Many more. It's like manipulating a photo negative. You can change exposure vs brightness/contrast, white balance, and more, but it's totally lossless, no compression. Downside they are very large files and need special s/w (usually comes w/ the camera or PS/PSE) to manipulate and view. There are plugins available for MS Viewer and Explorer.
