I wanted to get this one nailed down first because depending upon the results it could really change the way this league works. Currently, we can keep from 0 to 3 eligible players each year, and for each player you keep you lose a pick off of the top of the draft. Keep 1 player = lose 1st round pick. Keep 2 players = lose 1st and 2nd round picks. Keep 3 players = lose 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks.

I'm going to throw out two additional options to vote on which could obviously change keeper strategies each year:

Option A will be to keep it as it is. This has worked pretty well for us so far, but it might be too expensive. Changing this might be an incentive to keep more players.

Option B will be: Keep 1 player = lose 3rd round pick. Keep 2 players = lose 2nd and 3rd round picks. Keep 3 players = lose 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks. This will definitely encourage people to keep more players, but it might be too cheap.

Option C will be: Keep 1 player = lose 2nd round pick. Keep 2 players = lose 1st and 2nd round picks. Keep 3 players = lose 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks. This could be a decent compromise between what we currently have and the possibly too cheap option B.

Personally, I kind of like the way we have it currently. It is supposed to be a bit of a sacrifice to keep someone on your roster without anyone else getting a shot at them. But I really don't mind if you guys want to make it a little easier to keep players either.

I have never been in a keeper league before. Ho do other leagues do it? Can we have it where if you keep a player that was drafted in the 7th round, you lose that pick? Or is that too hard to manage?

I have not voted yet.

I guess my question would be, are you (or anyone else) particularly unhappy with the way the keepers have worked so far? I'm wondering why you want to change it. If you are unhappy with the way it's working, please try to articulate what about it isn't working for you... then we can try to form our discussion for rule changes around making it better.

Your example would pretty drastically change the entire layout of the league. I think we should table anything like that for now, and maybe we can all discuss it in person at our draft this year (and then vote to change it for next year).

Here's a scenario to consider... let's say this year you draft rookie RB Chris Wells in 6th round, and then he outperforms everyone and becomes the consensus #1 pick for the following couple of years. That would be quite a major steal for the following 2 years in a row to only have to sacrifice your 6th round pick for the consensus #1 overall pick. I know some leagues will have you give up a pick that is at least one round higher each year than a player was drafted. So if you draft Wells in the 6th, then you would give up a 5th to keep him the next year, and then a 4th to keep him the year after that.

We could discuss something like that if you like.

I kind of like that, you can keep a player in the later rounds that you like without having to sacrifice the number one pick. You would almost need someone just to manage this. I think running the league and this might be too much for one person.

UFF-DA Rule changes must have the approval of at least 8 of the 12 owners in order to be enacted.

Looks like for this year, we will be keeping this the same as previous years (draft picks come off the top of the draft). But we should definitely discuss it at our draft for future possibilities.
