QB -
Aaron Rodgers, Jake Delhomme - Went into the 3/4 turn knowing that there was a good chance that DO Jaded was thinking the same as me... land a top-tier QB and one of the top two TE's as well. I really like the way the GB passing game is clicking this year, and felt there was a bigger gap between Rodgers and Manning than between Witten/Gates. So, I decided to secure Rodgers, who I think could possibly even be one of the top two fantasy QB's this year, and wait until after the turn to grab one of the TE's. Best case scenario, DO takes neither one and I grab Witten... worst case, I "settle" for Gates, who I really like this year as well. Decided to roll the dice on Rodgers staying healthy, though, and didn't take a backup QB until fairly late in the draft.
Grade: A-RB -
Frank Gore, Thomas Jones, Kevin Faulk, Darren Sproles, Shonn Greene, Rashad Jennings - Having only one RB going into the 5.11 pick, I knew that I was probably in a position where I wouldn't be starting three RB's... at least not every single week. Granted, there were still some starting RB's on the board (Ward, J. Jones, Parker, Wells, Benson), but I had just missed on a few of the RB's that I was targeting (more like hoping they would fall to me) for the 5/6 swing... Rice, Lynch, Johnson, etc. Given that I felt that I had put myself in the position of having an advantage at QB and TE, I decided to take a couple of chances on guys who are very much "hit-or-miss", rather than just "chase" the rest of the league and grab one of the aforementioned starting RB's. I'm not as down this year on Thomas Jones as most others are, and I felt he was worth the risk with my 6th round pick. I feel even more comfortable with the pick, knowing that I have Greene as well... I think Leon Washington is an excellent change-of-pace guy, but it's Greene who will take the majority of the workload from Jones, in terms of carries and goal line work, if anybody does. In Faulk and Sproles, I feel I got two excellent PPR backs in that they both can be solid point producers as complimentary backs (similar to Washington). In Sproles particularly, I think there is a tremendous upside, given that his workload could increase dramatically if anything happens to LT. If not, though, I think he's still capable of catching 40-50 balls this year, making him a decent spot starter if needed. Jennings, although more of a late flier whose role is still somewhat undetermined, is sort of the same in that he could put up a few points as a situational back of sorts. I see myself starting two backs most weeks, with the occasional third RB thrown in if there happens to be an attractive match-up for Faulk or Sproles.
Grade: C+ WR -
Calvin Johnson, Donald Driver, Brandon Marshall, Davone Bess, Greg Camarillo, Kenny Britt - Going into the draft, I felt that, with the 11-slot, I wanted to get at least one top WR in the first two picks. I would have loved for AJ, Moss, or Fitz to fall to me, but was not terribly disappointed that I had to settle for Calvin instead. I debated between Gore and Johnson with that 1.11 pick, but finally decided to secure the last of the top-tier WR's, figuring that I would settle for Jackson or Williams if Gore was taken at the turn. Thus, I was very happy when Gore was still there for me at 2.2... I think he's in for a solid year in his first full season under Singletary. As I stated above, I took a chance at the 5/6 turn on both Jones and Marshall... had the news of Marshall's suspension come out earlier than it did, I probably would have gone with Anthony Gonzalez at 5.11, and waited to take a chance on Marshall at the 7/8 turn or later. Still, I'm comfortable with Johnson/Driver as my every-week starters, with one of the Miami WR's possibly stepping into the #3 role on this team. They were both money in PPR formats last year, when healthy, and I think that one of the two should pan out this year as well.
Grade: BTE -
Antonio Gates, Visanthe Shiancoe - What can I say... I got the #2 TE on the board in Gates, a guy who many think could be in for a real bounce-back year. The Shiancoe pick at 10.2 was all about value... I think he's got the potential to be a top-five fantasy TE this year, which could possibly even give me the flexibility to start a 2nd TE as my flex on bye-weeks where I'm stretched a little thin at WR or RB.
Grade: AKicker -
Ryan Longwell - Not much to say, other than that I intentionally grabbed an indoors kicker with a later bye week (9), so that I don't have to worry about filling it until all of my other byes (QB, TE, Def) have passed. I like Longwell's upside this year, in what should be a more balanced attack from the MN offense.
Grade: BDefense -
PHI - Even though they're ranked in the top 5 on most lists, I don't necessarily think I'll want to start this unit every single week. On the other hand, in this scoring system, all you really need from your D is sacks and TO's to be competitive at this position, so we'll see. I'll probably end up dropping somebody like Britt, Jennings, or either Bess/Camarillo if I feel the need to pick up a second defense and play the match-ups game.
Grade: BOverall, I like my team's chances... could have gone a lot of different directions with the 5/6 turn, and I'm fairly confident that those risk/reward picks will make or break my draft. However, I felt I had to take a chance or two at some point in this draft, rather than just be conservative all the way through. The unique thing about this team is that I'm solid at QB, TE, and defense, and not really sure where my flex player will come from on any given week. Realistically, it could be RB, WR, or TE. Ultimately, I feel that if Jones and/or Marshall are half as productive as last year, this team will be in the playoff hunt. If they both bomb, however, I'm probably looking at .500 at best. I like my chances.
