sometimes you can find pre-packaged figs in the produce section. i imagine that it's hard to find fresh figs up there. otherwise carmelizing onions and creating pizza dough are your work.... if you get some fresh figs, i've poached them in red wine, port, and a little honey. peel and slice.
edit: if figs are just not an option, pears make a nice sub.
Funny you mention pears. I made a nice sandwich today with figs, gorgonzola and fresh pear slices. Grill it a touch like a panini to melt down the cheese...mmmmmm.
