The Big Flippin' Game of the Week
Mr. Big (0-3) vs. flipcups (2-1).
Before we break down this Sunday's match-up, it should be pointed out that flipcups is no longer the same team as of just last week. Management has made some major wholesale changes after just their first loss of the season. Gone are the former flipcups' starting QB Kurt Warner and his backup Matt Leinart replaced by David Garrard. Gone are running backs LeSean McCoy and Fred Taylor in exchange for Marshawn Lynch. Gone is the injured wide receiver Laurent Robinson in exchange for Domenik Hixon.
All in all, it seems that when Frank Gore went down with an ankle injury last week, flipcups may have pushed the panic button prematurely. The only way I can explain this trade is that management has completely lost faith in Kurt Warner. Why they think David Garrard is a better option than Kurt Warner is beyond me. Sure, Warner hasn't played terribly well, but he still has the weapons and the potential to be a top ten quarterback. One can't play the age card for dynasty purposes because if the Jaguars don't win this year, then they may be looking for a new coach and a new QB in next year's draft. The real prize in the trade that seems to have been sought for by flipcups is Marshawn Lynch. Last year he was was the 13th best rusher in the NFL. Still, Lynch hasn't proved anything for this season. Furthermore, Lynch now has to share the rock with Fred Jackson. Why not just keep LeSean McCoy who has run extremely well in Brian Westbrook's absence? McCoy has run so well that they are now considering a running back time share in Philadelphia. If Lynch re-establishes himself as the premier runner in Buffalo, then it's not a bad move for this season and beyond. Trading Robinson for Hixon is at least getting someone who will possibly contribute this season. Long term, I don't like Hixon, as the Giants have better up and coming options with Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks. All-in all, I think the trading partner Shiz Another Day (3-0) got the better end of this trade with two future starters in McCoy and Leinart. Plus, Fred Taylor is emerging as the primary back for New England. Shiz is even more of a contender for this season.
The trade I did like for flipcups was grabbing Glen Coffee for his 2010 #1 pick from The Man With the Golden Ginn. It's a bit pricey for an unproven backup, but considering how hot this prospect is this week, flipcups had to pay a premium. Hindsight is 20/20, but considering Gore's injury history, flipcups should have been in negotiations much earlier to grab a handcuff at a lower price. This deal is really the only trade that needed to be made.
Now on to the position match-ups.
QB Battle
Philip Rivers vs. David Garrard
Phillip Rivers is the better QB here going against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 15th best defense against the pass so far this season. The passing game is where the Steelers can be exposed and Rivers has the arm to do it with awesome weapons: Vincent Jackson, Antonio Gates and Darren Sproles. David Garrard is coming off a decent game against Houston, where he didn't have to win the game because MJD was more than enough against a pathetic Texans run defense. Garrard will face the Titans' 29th worse passing defense. With the emergence of receiver Mike Sims-Walker, this is a golden opportunity for Garrard to shine. Still, I have to give the edge to Rivers because he's proven himself to be more consistent than Garrard.
Edge: Mr. Big
Running Game
Matt Forte and Mewelde Moore vs. Ronnie Brown, Glen Coffee and Marshawn Lynch
Matt Forte totaled over 100 yards last week combined with rushing and receiving. However, Forte has yet to put up stud numbers. This week Forte faces the Detroit Lions, the 16th worst rush defense in the league. It would appear, if Forte is going to emerge as a stud this year and prove himself worthy of the #2 draft pick, then now is his time to shine. However, these Lions were able to shut down Clinton Portis last week and eek out a win. Furthermore, Detroit's passing defense is even worse, which could create more opportunities for Cutler to look downfield or to bigger targets like Greg Olsen. I see Forte having a good game, but not a stud game, which is what Mr. Big so badly needs.
If Willie Parker can't go, then I see Melwelde Moore as the best option against a Chargers run defense that Parker gashed last year. The Chargers defense is better, but I think Moore can put up some points in the passing game. The problem is that he might not get going until the second half, especially if Tomlin decides to give the underachieving Rashard Mendenhall a shot. The potential for a very good game is there for Moore, but the best one can hope for is RB2 numbers.
The Saints defeated Buffalo last week by running the ball with Lynell Hamilton and Pierre Thomas racking up three touchdowns. I expect Ronnie Brown to have much success in running the ball down the Bill's throat this week as well. Brown has not delivered consistently this year, but I expect to see Brown deliver stud numbers in this game after being just adequate last week.
Folks have been hard on Glen Coffee's poor relief showing against the Vikings defense, but give him a break - he's not a stud, or even a Tashard Choice, and that was a tough defense. Coffee gets to prove whether his pre-season was a tease or whether he can produce RB1 numbers against the 27th worse running defense in the league. Still, Clinton Portis didn't get the job done against the Rams, but maybe that was due to injury. I like Coffee's chances of producing a good game.
Marshawn Lynch looked really good in the preseason. He looked a lot better than Fred Jackson. However, Jackson has looked great during the regular season, so now they both are going to share the touches. Miami has the third best rushing defense in the league, so I don't expect Lynch's return to be anymore than adequate.
Edge: flipcups
Receiving Game:
Dwayne Bowe, Kevin Walter and Jacoby Jones vs. Brandon Marshall and Chad Ochocinco
Dwayne Bowe took snaps with the first team today, so there's a chance he plays this weekend. The match-up is against the number one passing defense in the league. Still, Bowe is said to be running with speed and explosion, so you gotta start him cause he's good enough to overcome any D and even a bad QB. It's not ideal, but you hope for decent numbers opposed to stud numbers.
The idea with the Houston vs. Oakland game is that Nnamdi Asomugha will shut down Andre Johnson, leaving both Kevin Walter and Jacoby Jones (smart waiver wire pickup) free to run wild against the remaining secondary. It's a good strategy for this week, and Walter looked good last week. I expect solid WR2 numbers from Walter and solid WR3 numbers for Jones.
Last week, Brandon Marshall finally had a good game, and many expect that to continue this week since Dallas will most likely shut down the run trying to force Kyle Orton to beat them in the air. This strategy means more opportunities for Marshall who may return back to a true WR1 form. I like the upside here.
Chad Ochocinco has such a good match-up against the Browns that flipcups must have been salivating, when he set his line-up. Carson Palmer and Ochocinco have displayed adequate, but not superstar numbers, thus far. I heard an interview with Ochocinco last night about how his thought process was wrong last year, and how he wasn't focusing on the right things. I'm all for visualization, and this week I see Ochocinco living up to expectations and producing like a true fantasy WR1.
Edge: flipcups
TE Matchup
Chris Cooley vs. Kellen Winslow
Tampa Bay hasn't allowed a TD to a TE this year, but who cares. They are the 21st worse defense against the pass, and this match-up is prime for Chris Cooley to get in sync with Jason Campbell as they light up the Bucs.
Josh Johnson is a a pretty good athlete, and he's mobile. Johnson can get the ball to Kellen Winslow, who is explosive and can produce. Still, it's a crap shoot with any Tampa Bay offensive players so far, and with this being Johnson's first game, it's hard to predict what will happen.
Edge: Mr. Big
Josh Brown vs. Jay Feely
I got a feely that Jay Feely's Jets are better than Josh Brown's Rams. My gut feely is that Jay Feely prevails.
Edge: flipcups
Defensive/ Special Teams Battle
Indianapolis Colts vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Colts's passing defense is pretty good and they should keep Seattle in check. The Jaguars are the worse against the pass and overall give up the 25th most total yards as opposed to the Colts at #12. Give me the Colts.
Edge: Mr. Big
Summary
Mr. Big has the edge in the QB, TE and D/ST. flipcups has the edge with the RB, WR and PK. flipcups is not that far behind in the QB match-up due to Garrard's good match-up. All in all, I see the RB and WR game producing the most points in this event. Ultimately, Mr. Big comes up short, and the victory goes to flipcups.
Predicted Winner: flipcups
Who do I want to win?
Mr. Big. Nobody wants to see a fellow Huddler go 0-4 (unless they were playing me). Plus, I want a bigger lead in my division.
damn dude, solid writing there.
Yeah, I'm resigned to sucking this year. I don't think my team was that bad, but whatever.
