Not saying there's not enough shame to be spread around about race relations in this country by any means.
However, the North didn't secede from the Union to protect the institution of slavery. And the North wasn't en masse on a sectionalist level doing everything it could to prevent segregation from ending (to the point of abandoning both major political parties as recently as 1968).
