Are you saying that they would not offer the same amount of respect for her culture as they demand for their own? Personally, I think she was stupid to make the dress and wear it, but if this should not be allowed, should african americans be allowed to wear their multicolored robes and such to school activities?

Are you saying that blacks are intolerant of other cultures and heritages? Can they expect others to respect their cultural heritage and identity if they refuse the same to others?

African Americans shouldn't be allowed to wear multicolored robes if they discovered a new country and used slaves to build it, out of respect for the people they enslaved that are now living there.

Got to say, you'd assume someone along the way would quietly tell her when to use "I", "me", and "myself". Hey I'm not above a whole bunch of punctuation, spelling, and grammatical errors, but I know as heck, I'd get that puppy proofread many times before sending it off to the Southern Legal Whatever.
It kinda makes you look, well, dumb when you are making tons of mistakes while defending your right to attend an event celebrating your EDUCATIONAL achievements.
The other two salient points are that
1) you started "saving" for the dress that you were going to make yourself for 4 years? How much can that material possibly be worth?
2) I do think it is another moment of total overreaction. It's a friggin dress. It's not like she came in holding a flag. The dress is clearly not a flag, 'cos if it was she would be in deep trouble even from her advocates. But she is full of sh*t, as are the people who are expressing their 'outrage'.

She is obviuosly a backwoods neck from Kentucky. What kind of idiot would want to display the stars and bars on their dress? That said, what was the motivation for them denying her entrance into the prom? Her clothing was not in violation of the dress code at the school. I actually heard this story on our local news this morning. Her lawyer made some pretty good points. It really boils down to he principal just trying to be politically correct. He actually had the police remove this fat neck from the prom, when she hadnt violated policy. I smell lawsuit..

That dress is really ugly.

Most of the time the dress code policy is very vague and includes "...deemed to be appropriate" or some other coverall phrase. I would be shocked if that weren't in there somewhere.
I'm sure the dresscode doesn't specifically say that I can't wear a suit covered in dildos, or a shirt that lights up and says "Kentucky is for Morans" but I'm equally sure the dress code has a way of making both those sartorial extravagances illegal etc...

The Stars and Bars stood for everything right in this country. You Yankees twisted it around to make it all about slavery because the European countries were about to recognize the blessed Confederate States of America. In turn, the homosexual Abe Lincoln said he'd free the slaves. Most Northerners didn't even agree with this.

German Americans and Germans both have very strong pride in the cultural heritage. My mother in law was born in Rensberg and I have been there with my wife and in-laws to visit their family there. If you think the Germans arent proud of their German ancestry, you havent a clue. Of course, they all claim to hate Hitler, but everything else they embrace. That goes for German Americans and Germans..

I believe that slavery is absolutely wrong. I also know that practically every race, if not every race, has been enslaved at one time or another, and some still are today in other countries. I guess my question is, when will enough time have passed, that this is no longer an issue that is brought up in politcal conversation? Should I be seeking reperations from the Romans, and use it for an excuse for poor performance?

As to the last part of my earlier post, what is stupid about it. Most slaves in the United States were treated much better than their counterparts in Africa. The fact of the mater is that most slaves were treated very well here, because they were viewed as a valuable asset. While I totally disagree with slavery, if I had to be a slave, I'd much rather be one here than in Africa.

Why shouldn't I be proud of my heritage. Contrary to popular belief, very few Southerners actually owned slaves. Southerners have every bit as much right to be proud of there heritage as our northern brothers.

This is all so amazingly idiotic. Anybody who is actually offended by a Confederate flag is either an uptight windbag just looking for something to fight over, or a 150 year old freak.

I ask because I never feel the need to brag about my northern heritage. Frankly, I've never heard anyone around these parts feeling the need to display Northern Pride.

Considering the only people who ever bring it up is people who seem to insist it's the excuse blacks use for everything, perhaps you address them with that question.

The one difference in your example I'll throw out from a purely logical standpoint is that the Roman Empire has been dead and gone for about 1600 years. We are still governed by the Constitution which was initially written, and legally interpreted until more or less a generation ago, to exclude blacks from many basic rights supposedly provided to our citizens.

I'm not saying slavery is a legitimate excuse for poor performance on anything (not that I've ever heard anyone use such a thing), but the institution of slavery and the subsequent systematic treatment of blacks in the 80 or so years after abolition is the blackest (pun not really intended) part of the American experience.

Look at it like you pissed off someone for 400 years, it might take 100 years of buying them flowers and taking them out to dinner to get them over it.

I'm from the South and the only people I see who display pride are, for lack of a better word, rednecks, who aren't fond of black people to begin with.
