THE SIX KINGS
It sounds like he has no choice but to show up The Courier-Post Saturday, August 6, 2005 The Eagles notebook It appears Brian Westbrook will be reporting to Eagles training camp within the next few days, because it appears he has no other choice. Westbrook, the Eagles' running back, has been boycotting camp in a contract dispute even though, as a restricted free agent, he signed a one-year tender worth $1.43 million in June. He can be fined $6,000 a day for skipping camp and so far he's missed five days, worth $30,000. But he stands to lose a lot more if he holds out past Monday. That's because of an article in the collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the NFL Players Association. Article XVIII, Section 1 says that any player under contract who doesn't report 30 days before the first game of the regular season will lose a year of credited service. That would affect a player's pension, but in Westbrook's case, it also means he would not be able to become an unrestricted free agent in 2006. If he reports in time - and Monday is 30 days from the Sept. 12 opener at Atlanta - and plays out his contract, Westbrook would be free to sign with any team next season. But if he doesn't report, he'd lose a season of service and still be a restricted free agent - and be in the same boat he's in now.
