Grimm74
A sprained neck could keep Vikings running back Michael Bennett out of Friday's preseason game against San Diego. But even if Bennett plays, coach Mike Tice said backup Mewelde Moore will get the start. Bennett, who has missed 13 regular-season games over the past two seasons because of injury, hurt his neck while blocking in the first quarter of Friday's exhibition loss to the New York Jets. He was sent for a magnetic resonance imaging test Monday and did not participate in either practice. "He could come around tomorrow and he could play this week," Tice said. "If it's sore we obviously are not going to risk it. So we won't play him until [the final preseason game against] Seattle. Personally, I don't foresee him playing this week." Chuck Barta, the Vikings' head trainer, put Bennett's status between questionable and doubtful. Bennett, however, remains hopeful. "On a scale of one to 10, I'd give it an eight," said Bennett, indicating the MRI only showed swelling. "They are just being precautious." In two games this preseason, Moore has rushed for 86 yards on 11 carries, a 7.8-yard average, to lead the Vikings. Bennett has 19 yards on 12 carries, a 1.6 average. But Tice made it clear this isn't opening the door for Moore to become the No. 1 guy. "You can write whatever you want," Tice said. "Michael Bennett is our starting running back. He's got a dinged neck right now, so Mewelde is going to get the nod this week. It's like a regular-season game. One guy goes down, the other guy gets the chance." Official decision Having seen his team called for 31 penalties in two games, including 17 Friday against the Jets, Tice plans to hire two to three officials a day to observe team work in practice. Many of the officials will come from college conferences. Tice already has talked to Mike Pereira, the NFL's director of officiating, about getting the latest information to these referees. Jerry Seeman, who lives in the Twin Cities and is the NFL's former senior director of officiating, also will assist. Two officials, one from the Big Ten and another from Division II, were on hand for the afternoon practice Monday. "We'll call it very close in practice," said Tice, who plans to have the refs around for at least a month. "We'll make sure that we point it out very close on the film and see if we can get that cleaned up." This was quoted from the Star Tribune. 1st I like how the reported had to spell out MRI instead of just saying MRI...he is so smart.. Secondly what is up with Mike Tice. Is Bennett black mailing him? Come on Tice: Bennett is playing poorly, hes hurt, penalties, fumbles, and evey coach on the team thinks Moore should start...even the O Coordinator... This guys scull is pretty dang thick.
