My thoughts on Larry Johnson

Recommended Posts

:D:D

OH, I am the guy that every fantasy owner loves to hate. My friend and fantasy rival Aaron, had the second pick.. I had the first.

He chose Priest Holmes at no.2 overall, while I without hesitation took LT no.1

Round 6 Aaron was drooling over locking up Larry Johnson with Priest holmes to be completely covered in having a sure bet for that excellent RB situation in Kansas City. Priest goes down? Oh well, just as good talent with LJ. WRONG!

I snatched LJ up in round 6 after already taking LT and warrick Dunn . But not just because I knew he would hate me for taking him did I do this: Here are other reasons:

1) Priest is aging, can often play through injuries but is still prone to them, one bad hit, LJ could take over again

2) Even with priest in the backfield, When LJ carried, he was nearly worth starting every week because they would rest priest after he ALREADY scored 2 tds in the first half, and would give the ball to LJ for him to get two as well

3) LJ hates being a backup. He will demand more carries and as an owner of LJ, I expect him to succeed in every little chance he gets to spell Holmes of every little carry

What do you guys think?

I have drafted LJ in every draft I have participated in. He just keeps looking great, and Holmes has looked mediocre. I think the Chiefs should be smart about it and make Priest the league's best change of pace back, preserving what he has left for another season or 2. I doubt he will last the year as the primary ball carrier.

I agree with your points, the problem is when to take LJ. I'd love to have him and I have the 2nd slot in a 12 team serpentine. I'd love to get him at my 6.11 but I think if I want him I need to take him at 5.02. Now that's a bit early for my liking as I could probably get someone like D. Foster, Barlow, R.Brown or Benson at the same spot. I think a lot of people (if not everyone) would love to have LJ, but how early is too early?

I grabbed him a 6.5 because last years Superbowl winner - in my division - had Holmes.

:D here's to hoping that LJ turns out being the guy in KC

No way I take LJ in the 6th. The 9th maybe, but more likely the 10th or 11th at best, IF I own Priest.

BTW, where exactly did you make that awesome Warrick Dunn pick??

Just MHO, but I just think that LJ will outperform all of those backs. Even if he's splitting time with Holmes, there are big downsides to all of the listed backs...

Foster - can't stay on the field. Why people think this will change this season, I can't figure out

Barlow - showed what he was made of last year. maybe he will be better this season, but better is a loooooong road for this guy

R Brown - Miami was one of the worst offenses in the league last year. I don't see the improvement, and with a new coach that doesn't know the pro game of today as well as he could, I am not sold on any Mia player

Benson - just getting into camp, and T Jones has been tearing it up. I can't see Lovie Smith benching a vet for this rook that just bothered to show up after the third preseason game.

Guess I should have mentioned, my thinking is based on the Huddle Perfect Scoring System (for the most part) and VERY limited bench spots.

I still disagree on the 6th round. Maybe my local drafted a little early, but I opted to wait until the 10th and take Mike Anderson. :D

I am not sure what you have been watching, but Priest has not been mediocre and it is because of the presence of LJ that Priest has an excellent chance to last the year as the primary ball carrier.

Unless your drafting with a bunch of boy scouts, ain't no way LJ should be there by the 9th round ... or 8th or 7th for that matter.

:D I've been checking out every bit of preseason action I could on the NFL network, and in every bit of KC footage I have seen of the 2 backs Johnson has looked superior.

What have you been watching? It doesn't sound like KC games.

The simple fact that Vermeil is an emotional guy, and loyal to a fault, as long as Priest is healthy, he'll be the guy. Even if LJ is younger, Vermeil will give Holmes every opportunity to be a big time producer. I don't think there's any question here that LJ gets garbage time/change of pace duty as long as Priest is healthy AND KC remains in the playoff race.

KC wants Priest to get hurt in the pre-season? :D or anytime, for that matter. Pre-season is when you show ALL your cards. :D

I took Holmes with the 4th pick yesterday in a 10 team league. I told myself going in that if I drafted Holmes (it was between Holmes and Edge), that I would grab LJ with my 5th pick. J.J Arringtion was still there at 5 so I took him hoping LJ would fall to me in the 6th....didn't happen. The guy right after me took him in with his 5th pick. Right now I wish I would've just picked Edge but we'll see how it turns out.

Priest is fine and will continue to produce at a high level during the season. Because of his patience and vision he will still be a touchdown machine. Johnson has looked great in pre-season, but I have every confidence that Priest will be solid in regular season action.

I don't know where that came from. :D

Running the ball successfully isn't exactly showing all of your cards.

One of these guys has gone 17/68/0 for a 4.0 YPC, and the other has gone 26/233/1 fpr an 8.96 YPC. They are both lining up against first stringers, although admittedly not for all of LJs carries.

Anyways, my only point is that LJ has looked far better in the preseason. We know it's preseason. We know what it means. But to not admit the guy has looked amazingly good, even compared to Holmes, is just being stubborn.

Nobody has demeaned Johnson's pre-season showing.

You seem to be a little bit touchy about this.

Not touchy, just adamant. I mean, that he has been much better has been obvious to anyone that has watched.

You yourself posted disgreement to the disparity between Holmes and Johnson. So, which are you agreeing with? That Johnson has looked like a world-beater in preseason and much better than Holmes, or not?

None of this means Johnson would make a better starter in the regular season. Nobody can know that for certain.

Yes, Johnson's stat line has been better in pre-season and he has looked great. I never disagreed with you on that. I just don't believe that Priest has been mediocre. We all know that pre-season can be misleading because of all the experimenting that is going on with both teams in the games. You are being adament about something that everybody is in agreement on.

I took Johnson in the six round, my backs look like this.

Rudi

D.Davis

Johnson

perry

w.parker

If holmes goes down, wow, Im loaded. If he stays healthy, make a trade. With him. Thinking about doing it before the season even starts.
