Connecticut Huddlers

...can see me doing one of a couple things:

1. Reading from my book.

2. Discussing my book with other sports authors on some kind of panel.

3. Sitting in a tent waiting for people who have bought the book to get it signed.

4. Sitting in a dunking machine while people throw baseballs at a target and try to dunk me into a vat of battery acid.

Honestly, I have no idea what they have planned for me, but I'll be one of scads of authors appearing at the "Books, Boats and Brushes" festival, New London, CT. Mike Lupica is the "headline act" I think, but where I fit, again, no clue.

Having been born in New London and grown up in Mystic, here are a few suggestions for your leisure time:

1) Do not eat at Mystic Pizza. I know the movie says it's a slice of heaven, but Angie's Pizza on Route 1 in Mystic is the place to go. Their grinders are great too.

2) Can't decide which casino to go to? Foxwoods is way better than Mohegan Sun.

3) Visit the Mystic Seaport. It'll take you back a few hundred years, and you can hop aboard some old whaling ships.

Having grown up in Northern CT, having a wife from New London, and having been there last week, here a few suggestions.

1) Do not eat at Mystic Pizza. In fact don't eat pizza at all. Go to Captain Scotts. It's a walk up window with outdoor dining, but its hands down in one of the best seafood joints you'll come across. Anywhere. I highly reccommend the Lobster Bisque. You'll have to ask one of the locals how to get there, maybe even take you as this place is burried on the docks and most likey isn't on any map ever made.

2) Foxwoods may have more star power and better shows, but Mohegan Sun is the "better" casino. The environment is a little less harsh than Foxwoods. The best thing at the Sun may be the Martini Bar under the planetarium sky.

3) Mystic Seaport is cool, but probably too far out of the way for you. Stick to the casinos. Other than that, there isn't jackAthena to do out there.

Dang, Mark. I could have come and seen you today if I had checked the Huddle earlier in the day. I live about 5 minutes from New London.

Hope everything went well. At least you had some good weather today.

Edit: I think the Mohegan Sun casino kicks a$$. I don't gamble much, but I do go there for the concerts and to eat once in awhile. There's a nice irish pub in there called the Dubliner.

Mystic Pizza: Meh. No big deal.

The Mystic Aquarium is really cool. Gotta check out their Titanic exhibit.

It was fun. Did a goofy little reading to about 15 people -- 4 of whom were my parents, wife and sister -- and then signed a few books. Nice little event. Sadly, no Mohegan Sun gambling followed.

:D

Having lived in CT for 9 years now, moved from NY, I can say this:

1)Mystic Pizza tastes just like it does in Stop n Shop's frozen aisle: liek a frozen pizza. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find any decent pizza in this cess-pool of a state. Wait, Artan's in Shelton makes a great pie and so does NY Pizza in Bridgeport. Plus the chicks who work there look nothing like the 3 hotties form the movie.

2) Foxwoods... Mohegan... Debby... the car... Debby... the car... They're casinos, without the Vegas hookers. Each is very nice, you can go to them and lose your money equally easy as the other. But the new Mohegan is a nicer joint to go broke.

3) Mystic... geez... what else can I say besides... geez. I mean, it's a nice little town, there's a nice little harbor park... a nice little Aquarium... bored within 3 hours. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice joint (I proposed to my wife in the park) but if you're a dude it's just... geez.
