Computer Problems, Part Deux

OK, background. Kid comes over and installs my wireless router. He's done in literally 3 minutes. Then he goes on to fix my Mozilla issues (although we still can't get Firefox to run correctly). Anyways...

First week or so of using the wireless router - with my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop with internal wireless network card - was fine. Fast, no issues.

I left for Louisiana for Christmas and turned off my modem/computer. I used my laptop in Louisiana (found a stray wireless signal and off I went... :D) ... Came home, turned modem/computer back on (and after like a half hour of trying to log on to my DSL, as I had in the past, finally realized the router was handling the login, something the kid computer consultant didn't tell me)....

Ever since I got back, my wireless connection is screwwy. I get "timeout" or "firewall" warnings on Firefox. My Pokerstars stalls out. At first, it was very intermittent. Now it's doing this all the time.

On Dells, "function" and "F2" activates the wireless "wi-fi". If I toggle it, the connection resets and everything is fine... for a minute or so... or less... or a little more... :D

I have a D-Link wireless router. It doesn't have an on/off switch. How should I "refresh" it?

Any other troubleshooting tips?

Thanks guys. :D

There is a small reset button in the back of most Linksys routers. If you press that while it's powered on, it will restore the factory defaults. This will remove WEP encryption and any other settings (should be any) that you have configured. That would be the first step. Once it's reset you should be able to find it no problem. The connection will be named "linksys". Let me know.

Yeah there's a reset button on it... but will that reset ALL the settings? If so, I don't know if I want to do that. I am not as computer savvy as I once was, so I don't know the first thing about setting up a router, hence the reason I had a "computer consultant" come out in the first place. What would the setup entail?

Thanks for the response.

Yo, tonorator, wanna come up to OC and fix my chit? :D

The reset button will do nothing more than discard the encryption key that is probably preventing you from accessing the network. When I say ALL THE SETTINGS, it sounds bad, but it's really not. Most people have 2 settings configured:

1. The name of the wireless network (default is linksys)

2. WEP Encryption Key (to prevent unauthorized access)

It's very easy, no need to be saavy, try it, I'll walk you through any issues you may have.

Do you have DSL or cable?

Do you have a desktop hooked up to the router with a wire? Does it work fine?

Resetting it will wipe all passwords and such, if you have DSL you'll need these to re-configure your PPPOE.

DSL. Desktop's hooked up via USB, and works fine.

I'm going to check my connection when I get home to see if it was maybe just a one-time thing.

Thanks h8.

If the desktop works fine, then it ain't the router, or at least it makes the probabilty of the router being the culprit very slim.

I would say there is something in the laptop hindering connection.

Have you run the spyware gammot?

we have a similar problem occaisionally in my office. Things just drop usually after a power outage in the area (even though both devices are on UPS).

Instead of resetting, which clears all your WEP security and all, i unplug the modem and router, wait a minute or so, then plug the modem in first, let it cycle up, then plug the router in. Restart the machines and bingo.

Beats resetting all the firewall and security settings.

Edited to add: this works on a Belkin Pre-N (office) and a Linsys router (home) too, both with Comcast

Here's what you need to do:

1. Clear out the chrome caniculator valve.

2. Add some 30 weight oil and some ball bearings. It's all ball bearings these days.

3. Calculate the hypoteneuse of the woofoo and adjust accordingly.

4. Stop looking at gay porn.

That should take care of it. If that doesn't work send a PM to puddy to get the name of his AAA guy.

Does anyone ever notice that all these computer problems start with basically the same sentence..."my Dell computer/laptop was working just fine until..."  :D

Until the power went out

Until I went surfing a Bulgarian prostitutes web site

Until I dropped it from the fifth floor of a parking ramp, along with my sammiches

Until I loaded up this really cool screensaver

Until I installed a new game my buddy burned for me

Heard 'em all. :doah:

Actually, these things do not come up until after a couple hours of troubleshooting...then they said "Oh, you know what, I did...."

Or you find a shucks load of crap on the machine and point it out to them.
