Suspicious powder gives library scare

GRAND RAPIDS -- A powder made for a baby's backside caused a scare at the downtown Public Library today.

A library worker discovered white powder while unloading new books from a box on the fourth floor just before noon. Fearing the powder was anthrax, library officials called 911.

Fire trucks and police blocked the front entrance at 111 Library St. NE. Firefighters kept about a dozen employees on the fourth floor, fearing they could spread a potential deadly virus if allowed to leave, Battalion Chief Kevin Sehlmeyer said.

Within minutes, firefighters wearing masks and rubber gloves used a portable computer known as "HazMatID" to determine the substance.

It was "Johnson and Johnson baby powder."

You had me scared there! Right down the road in G.R. Good thing they went through all that trouble. I guess if you are that close to anthrax, you are already screwed so you might as well get close and smell it. Baby powder has a pretty distinct odor, it probably wouldn't be that hard to identify it as baby powder.

People have been scared stupid... or they were already stupid, one of the two.  What interest would a terrorist have with screwing with all of the cheap Hollanders in Grand Rapids?

My department chair's 12 year-old daughter got very concerned about terrorism after 9/11, but he told her that she had nothing to worry about as she would die of old-age before the terrorists ever found their way to Grand Rapids.
