1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

Published in 2005 by Cassell Illustrated. Selected & written by 90 leading international critics, general editor Robert Dimery. In chronological order 1955-2005. Year of release only given here, when considered absolutely necessary. Where there were differences in UK & US (or other) releases for artists, such as the Beatles & the Rolling Stones, the original country of release edition can be taken to be the one listed, unless indicated otherwise. (ie: for the Rolling Stones’ Aftermath & The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night, the UK editions are the ones listed). No compilations were allowed, though, the odd one (The Hives’ Your New Favorite Band, for example) did creep in!

pretty exhaustive.

Smashing Pumpkins' Gish is missing

Jah Wobble – Rising Above Bedlam - has about two good tunes. Same with

Dee Lite - World Clique

United States of America is kinda hard to get through as is a whole ELP cd, let alone two.

In total, 219 of the 1001, I kind actually put my hand on somewhere in my house.

Conclusions gleaned from this list:

The list is VERY British. 3 Dexy's Midnight Runners albums? I could die now having only heard "C'mon Eileen" & be fine with it. On the other hand, there wouldn't be that much 80's metal on an American list.

I have WAY too many cd's that I don't listen too very often.

My wife is the big Beatle's, Bowie, & Elvis Costello fan. She also has too many cd's she doesn't listen to very often.

The Pixies were awesome.

Big Black: Atomizer - Hell yeah! Must listen to that one again IMMEDIATELY.

I am clearly out of the mainstream in the 2000's, as I have bought virtually nothing important in the last 6 years.

What, No Supersuckers? :D

What an utterly useless, piece-of-trash list.

First of all, the list is WAAAAY too long. Am I going to live to be 200 years old? If not, then there's no way I'll get through 1,001 albums before I die. Plus, there isn't a single person on earth who would enjoy all of those albums...so what's the point?

Secondly, if the list is going to be THAT big, any omission is just glaring. No Tool, no Blind Melon, no Jackson Browne, no Van Morrison, no The Who...I mean, I could go on and on.

Zero credibility, in my opinion.

Where to start?

1000 hours to listen to all that... maybe a tad more. Heck, I own more albums than are listed. (Vinyl=album)

Van Morrison is on there countless times... as is The Who.

I have a fair portion of those albums on vinyl. A fair portion on cassette tape. And a goodly number on CD.

As far as one person 'enjoying' all the music listed... of course not. Each has his taste. However..... there is no doubt in my military mind that there is an amazing number of people that have 'listened' to 95% of all that music.

Whoops...my search method (CTRL + F) was flawed. I searched for "The Who" and "Van Morrison", like a moron. :D

Well, I feel a little better knowing the Who and Morrison are on there. Leaving off Blind Melon is still unforgivable, though, on a list that large.

As for my first contention that there's no way I could listen to all of those albums before I died, I guess it's possible. It's just unlikely. If I were to sit down once every two weeks and really take in an album, it would take me 40 years to get through 1000 hours. By that time, there will be four more decades of music to absorb. :D

I wouldn't say I've listened to 95% of it, but a few of my faves mentioned on the list include Megadeth, Anthrax, Sinatra, Ellington, Buck Owens, Dwight Yoakam, Tom Waits, and The Chemical Brothers. :D

I'd say there are PLENTY of people who would enjoy most of the music on that list. I think it was Dizzy Gillespie who broke music down to two types - good and bad.

I DO agree with Swiss that 1001 is a pretty worthless f'in list, as it's too darn big. 100 would be more wieldy and have more pull, as it's more selective.

I'd at the VERY least remove these inessential albums from the list - they range from "far inferior to that artists best/most influential work" to "highly derivative" to "pile o'crap".

Oh, I put Tom-Tom Club on that list because their contributions can mostly be boiled down to the single "The Genius of Love" (sorry, Tina and Chris)
