And my question is--what if it were possible for a monkey to get the bananas without he himself getting hit with the hose AND for him to know that none of the other monkeys will ever figure out that the reason they got the hose was because the first monkey got the bananas.

What would stop the monkey from going after the bananas?

It would depend on the genetic makeup and previous external conditioning of the banana-seeking monkey. Presuming the monkey was bred into a herd-like condition such as a colony, and had the genetic makeup of a follower, then it would attempt to fit in with the other monkeys regardless of rational thinking or logic.

Conversely, if the monkey was bred into an independent system, then the beliefs of the herd would not apply, and the monkey would go for the bananas. At that point, the physical prowess, obtained through genetic makeup, of the banana-seeking monkey would be the only limiting factor in retreiving the bananas.

Fortunately, there are mediums such as internet bulliten boards and television for the monkeys to disseminate information such that future generations of monkeys will irrationally fear bananas.

Does this qualify as an answer?

What if the monkey was infected with rage?

Look, I'm a behaviorist at heart so I think that people act out of either learned behavior or observed behavior that has been deemed useful. The monkey example fits exactly with that line of thinking. Which means that the monkey might not act out of self interest if it didn't take the time to think about its actions and relied on the behaviors it has learned previously.

Hasn't anyone else thought this through yet?
