AtomicCEO
Did you answer my question? No, you didnt. Yes, he did. Your question included "or is it only the looney left who likes to burn the flag?". I think we've proven in this thread that, in fact, nobody likes to burn the flag since it's only happened 40 times in 200 years. So, yeah... even though your question was retarded, he did answer it for some reason.
WaterMan
Burn people. Not flags. Flags can't run around screaming.
Retrograde assault
Desecrate your flag if you must, but do us both a favor and don't do it in front of me.
SuperBalla
Oh wait, those were nonsensical issues raised by President Clinton in election years. It's a ridiculous assertion to pin such antics solely on Republicans. DemonKraps must like to burn the American flag.
Jimmy Neutron
That vote was too close for comfort. Ya know, my blood has always boiled at the sight of someone buring Old Glory, but if an amendment like this is ever passed, I'll be the first one getin' riotous with some gasoline, a lighter and that same flag! suppasonic
The first amendment protects freedom of expression within limits. You cannot yell "fire" in a crowed theatre, "bomb" on an airplane, or post a giant picture of porn on your storefront window. I believe burning a flag falls under this. It incites a negative result without accomplishing anything. If you want to challenge the government, run around with "Screw Bush" signs or "Stop the War" posters all you like. But please, please, dont burn the symbol of our nation, the thing that unifies democrats, republicans, immigrants, and born and bred Americans alike. A constitutional amendment to burn a flag? Sounds great. I'm not about to go make petitions to get one passed, but I'll surely agree with it.
Randall
The flag is a symbol of this once great country. Noone has desecrated the flag in real terms more than Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld. Fixing elections while pretending to like democracy overseas, torturing prisoners, many who did nothing wrong, ignoring the rule of law, illegal wars. Our rule of law and love for justice made us great. It meant more than physical power. I have faith in the founding fathers and believe we will be a great country again because of our people. Make flags out of inflammable materials.
Furd
I believe burning a flag falls under this. It incites a negative result without accomplishing anything. Without accomplishing anything? Are you kidding me? They are trying to amend the f*cking constituion of the United States because of it. There is no more powerful form of protest in the entire world than burning the Amercian flag. You allude to so-called "fighting words." Burning an American flag could amount to this in certain circumstances if it was done mainly an a personal insult or to provoke a breach of the peace. The First Amendment protects unpopular speech, as popular speech doesn't need protecting. Think now. How many times in your life have you witnessed someone burning the American flag? Or even saw it on television? How many times do you think that it has happened this century? A couple. I don't think I can recall any. So, in reality, we are talking about, not an act, but an idea. To amend the constitution because of an idea is particularly repulsive to me. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Constitutional amendments such as this one are being attempted in order to distract attention and to galvanize the flag waving wing of the Republican Party. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.....
AtomicCEO
I believe burning a flag falls under this. It incites a negative result without accomplishing anything. I disagree. It seems like the perfect protest to the government trying to amend the constitution to abolish flag burning. It's an absolutely perfect example of unpopular speech against the government which the constitution specifically protects.

Clubfoothead
I've got a Meet the F*ckers t-shirt. Except my t-shirt has no star in the word F*ckers. It's got a picture of the Coward-in-Chief, Condi and Dick. Some people nag at me because of the word F*ckers. I usually tell them to blame the F*ckers. You can't handle it? It's not like flag burnings are rampant. Find some recent examples on US Soil. I'll wait. When it happens, you are free to think, say, or carry a sign declaring that the person who did it is a total ass. Blackball that person. Kick them off your property. Refuse to service them at your business. You have those rights.
SuperBalla
The First Amendment protects unpopular speech, as popular speech doesn't need protecting. The popular voice needs protection because the unpopular voice is always attacking with lawsuits and in some issues eating away at what the majority of people feel is right or moral. What happened to something just not being right? Instead of fixing the issue to become right...we are just made to feel bad for being on a certain side of an issue. If I am pro-life I called a communist Chinese radicalist, hardly the case, or if I feel the pledge of allegience should be recited in school...I am a bible bashing snake handler. Somethings just ain't right... If flag burning was outlawed the act of igniting one would speak alot louder than it does now. I agree it doesn't happen often and I have never seen it. It would repulse me if I did...however I agree that voices should be protected...evenly. Some issues provide a middle ground that the opposing parties could meet eventually...some you can't meet in the middle on and in those issues lies the division of America. godtomsatan
People who advocate changing the Constitution over something as petty and ridiculous as this don't deserve the protections offered in the document. bushwacked
Our elected officials in congress need to waste time and money passing ridiculous amendments that would never come close to passing muster in the most conservative of courts because the overwhemingly popular opinion is oppressed by the the minority and their lawsuits?
