TimC
2 weeks..... I worked in industry for 4+ years. Air conditioned??? Yeah, I forgot, most machine shops and steel fab shops are air-conditioned....we opened the overhead door! My point is there are alot of hard workers out there for less pay. For some reason in the past decade or so, teachers now feel we should worship them. They have an important job, but no more important than others. I personally wouldn't do it because parents are so crappy now compared to the past where they really cared about teaching their kids. But hey, if teachers want to put themselves up on a pedastal for all to see, who am I to dispute it?

peteteacher2001
You think babysitting a bunch of spoiled kids and following a text book is harder than other jobs in the workforce? Puh-lease. Try digging a ditch for 2 weeks. Try building a house for 2 weeks and see if the air-conditioned job you enjoy is still as difficult as you think. I have been working since I was 11 years old. Bailing hay and straw, roofed for a few, framed houses, and was the foreman on an asphalt crew for 3 years. None of these were all at the same time of course. BUT, I earned my stripes. Ask if I have ever worked hard in my life before drawing conclusions and pointing fingers. AND I HAVE dug a ditch as well, it sucked! I'd much rather deal with the heat and sweat of any of those jobs than deal with some of the problems that arise in my current profession. If you don't like what we do, fine, but don't insult me and call me a glorified babysitter. Fair enough?

AtomicCEO
unions seriously hamper the auto industry's ability to compete. I disagree. Never have I looked at new cars and decided against the American car because of it's labor source, or because it's price was a few thousand dollars higher. The auto industry's inability to compete has to do with it's product design. When I think of American cars worth a crap, I think of trucks and retreads of famous cars from the 70s. evil_gop_liars
Now there once was a union maid, she never was afraid Of the goons and the ginks and the company finks and the deputy sheriffs who made the raid. She went to the union hall where a meeting it was called, And when the boys would come up to her Oh this is what she'd say Oh, you can't scare me, I'm sticking to the union, I'm sticking to the union, I'm sticking to the union. Oh, you can't scare me, I'm sticking to the union, I'm sticking to the union 'til the day I die. Now this union maid was wise to the tricks of company spies She'd take the dare, she didn't care, she always organized the guys. And she always got her way when she asked for better pay. She showed her card to the National Guard Honey this is what they'd say Oh, you can't scare me, I'm sticking to the union, I'm sticking to the union, I'm sticking to the union. Oh, you can't scare me, I'm sticking to the union, I'm sticking to the union 'til the day I die. Now you girls who want to be free, just take a little tip from me; Oh get you a man who's a union man and you can join the ladies' auxiliary. Because married life ain't hard when you got a union card, And a union life is a happy life when you got a union wife. Oh, you can't scare me, I'm sticking to the union, I'm sticking to the union, I'm sticking to the union. The auto industry's inability to compete has to do with it's product design. When I think of American cars worth a crap, I think of trucks and retreads of famous cars from the 70s. Sounds to me like both the unions and the product designers need to be given the heave-ho. Ah, but what if those designers are given very strict budget $ guidelines that totally tie their hands, based on a short-term focus on profits versus the long-term quality focus? Then maybe its the top leadership that needs a shakeout instead? Uh-oh, sounds like we should just shut them all down, let the foreign carmakers build more plants here and buy all our (superior quality) cars from them. Decisons, decisions.... BTW, I think teachers should make more money but without a union, and without the 'tenure' (i.e. guaranteed employment until retirement gig) somehow. We need to get better, smarter people to choose that as a profession, but those people would require a better ROI for it - as they should.... Now I'm a union manAmazed at what I am I say what I think That the company stinks Yes I'm a union man. When we meet in the local hall I'll be voting with them all With a hell of a shout It's out brothers out And the rise of the factory's fall. Oh you don't get me I'm part of the union You don't get me I'm part of the union You don't get me I'm part of the union Till the day I die, till the day I die. As a union man I'm wise To the lies of the company spies And I don't get fooled By the factory rules 'Cause I always read between the lines. Oh you don't get me I'm part of the union You don't get me I'm part of the union You don't get me I'm part of the union Till the day I die, till the day I die. Before the union did appear My life was half as clear Now I've got the power To the working hour And every other day of the year. So though I'm a working man I can ruin the government's plan Though I'm not too hard The sight of my card Makes me some kind of superman. Oh you don't get me I'm part of the union You don't get me I'm part of the union You don't get me I'm part of the union Till the day I die, till the day I die. billay
I disagree. Never have I looked at new cars and decided against the American car because of it's labor source, or because it's price was a few thousand dollars higher. The auto industry's inability to compete has to do with it's product design. When I think of American cars worth a crap, I think of trucks and retreads of famous cars from the 70s. I'm no expert, but from what I've read, the benefits that GM employees enjoy are, in large part, responisble for that company's inability to turn a profit. GM has been referred to as a health insurance provider that just happens to make cars. Don;t think it's bad? What did Daimer pay for Chrysler? 85 billion? What did they sell it for? 7 billion? You think they would take that kind of hit if the long term prognosis wasn;t bleak? GM pays for full benefits for more retired employees than they presently employ. I would say that as a whole, GM employees have it better than any other american labor (lower case "L") union out there. Now, in the midst of globalization, they want a guarantee that future GM cars will all be made in america, so they strike? It smacks of greed. Would they rather that GM goes under instead of them taking slightly less away from the table? Ford/GM took care of it's employees since it's inception. They're being sucked dry. As for design and forward thinking, you're right. I'll never forget watching Lou Dobbs the day oil hit $70 a barrel for the first time in who knows, and the first commercial into the break was for GMC's newest, "biggest SUV ever." I vividly remember thinking, man, these guys are so far behind the curve, it's pathetic. Edited September 26, 2007 by billay
