DMD
My son has been playing guitar for a couple of years now and when we chat, I realize how very little I know about guitar players. My understanding is that Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton were/are considered premier guitar players but I don't know much else. My son is turning 15 soon and already convinced that he has somehow gained all the knowledge of the world over the last year so my looking uninformed about good guitar players is just further proof for him. I am mostly considering electric guitars here but who do you think ranks as the best guitarist of all time?
Bill Swerski
I'm not a guitar expert, but you can add Eddie Van Halen to the list of rock guitarists. I think some of the blues musicians might be the best. Stevie Ray Vaughn was incredible. And I'm sure there are a ton of others that I'm not even aware of. whomper
Most may say Hendrix and its very hard to argue with that..IMO its Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Chargerz
My personal favorites (in order) are Jimi Hendrix (man, the sounds that he could make come out of a guitar!), Eric Clapton (best live concert I've ever been to), Stevie Ray Vaughan (great blues guitarist too), Jeff Beck, and, of course, Jimmy Page. jelap1
On top of the two you've already mentioned I would have to include, in no particular order: Duane Allman, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page and Carlos Santana. I also can't leave out the virtuoso guitarists - Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Eric Johnson. JSMHO

Chargerz
...and in the female top guitarist category, I can only think of two: 1) Joni Mitchell (folk guitar) 2) Joan Jett
jaxfactor
Really depends on what genre of music you're looking at, although I think in your son's case it would probably be rock. Hendrix tops my list as he was way ahead of his time. I agree with Chargerz in that Clapton was absolutely amazing live. Not rock, but don't forget Les Paul and Al Demiola(spelling)

jaxfactor
All of the above mentioned, plus Ry Cooder, Mark Knopfler, and Frank Zappa. Forgot about him. Most people think silly when they think of Zappa, but he was a remarkable guitarist. I'll add a few more to the rock list: Steve Howe- Yes Alex Lifeson- Rush Buck Dharma- Blue Oyster Cult(very underrated, but just listen) Robin Trower(sounds alot like Hendrix) Michael Schenker- UFO & MSG

Bill Swerski
Lindsey Buckingham Often ignored because their music didn't always feature him. Not sure that he's one of the greatest ever, but is pretty f'n good at the very least. Very underrated songwriter as well.
