It's time for a face lift...

Recommended Posts

Okay, so maybe there were some reasons from both sides in the past as to why ND didn't join the Big 10 (11)... but if ever there was time to make it happen, now is it.

Let's face it, they both need each other right now. Both are tremulously suffering. The Big 10 conference has lost it's legitimacy as a top conference and Notre Dame has now gone almost an entire generation without kids knowing what it was like to have this storied program continually be among the ranks of the USC's, Alabama's, Michigan's/OSU's of the nation.

With this one simple move, the Big 10 would be able to join the ranks of the conferences that have passed them by, and add a Championship Game. It would add to the SOS for all the teams, and it would draw better TV coverage. ND would finally get respectability for playing top tier teams (vs. what they have now), ties to bowl bids, and a share in the overall bowl money.

IMHO, this would be a huge face lift for both... What say you?

ND's schedule really isn't any different from anyone else's. They play USC, Navy and 3 Big Ten teams annually. They build their schedule around that, and if you look at the schedule of any team in the top ten you're going to find one, if not more Div2A opponents. They join the Big Ten how different is it to play Northwestern instead of Army?

Here's next year:

Sept. 4 PURDUE

Sept. 11 MICHIGAN

Sept. 18 at Michigan State

Sept. 25 STANFORD

Oct. 2 at Boston College

Oct. 9 PITTSBURGH

Oct. 16 WESTERN MICHIGAN

Oct. 23 at Navy (E. Rutherford, NJ)

Oct. 30 TULSA

Nov. 13 UTAH

Nov. 20 Army (at Bronx, NY)

Nov. 27 at USC

Those first 6 games are a grind, with the possible exception of Michigan and how odd is that to hear?

Their problem isn't a lack of conference it's been bad hires for the generation you speak of. Weis brought in a great college QB and a couple of WRs who'll probably make pretty good pros. He thought that would win games by scoring at will. Willingham didn't give 2 chits about recruiting in the end and Bob Davie simply used excuses when he wasn't tough enough to handle it. ANd there's a guy named O'Leary in there as well.

The only silver lining in that is all of those hires were by the old AD. There's a new guy in who can try to clean up the mess. If the talk if true about Stoops or Kelly they might be on the right track. They ahve a TV contract that's too good to give up quite frankly.

First of all, I say things are cyclical, and the Big Ten will be among the top conferences some day. To suggest otherwise is having a short memory.

But lets face it. Why would Notre Dame do it? They go to a BCS Bowl game, they get ALL of the revenue, and don't have to share it with the rest of the conference. And let's be honest, it's pretty easy for ND to get to a BCS Bowl game. Look at the last 3 times they've been to one. It's easier now, with the 5th game. Yeah they haven't been to one in 3 years, but that's because they have sucked for 3 years. And then you get to the tv deal. Until NBC pulls the plug on the deal, Notre Dame will never join a conference. And again, why would they? There is no reason to from a competitive standpoint, or more importantly from a financial standpoint.

Now I agree, in the pie in the sky theory, it's a great idea. It's simply not in the cards right now, and quite frankly there is no other team out there that fits the bill for a 12th team, from a competitive standpoint, a financial standpoint, and an academic standpoint.

Bottom line is, as long as the NBC TV Deal is there, Notre Dame won't go anywhere, and they would be stupid to do so. And I can't stand Notre Dame, but they got it made right now. They just need to get a coach who isn't an egomaniacal a$$hole.
