Give me couple days on this . . I have a relative that is a university professor that teaches social work. He also works part time for the state of WI interviewing and counseling people on food stamps/assistance and volunteers through a church-based charity counseling people on hard times as well.

I think a lot comes from where you fall on the political spectrum.

Right= Assumption that most people that receive food stamps are "gaming the system"

Left= Assumption that most people dont want to remain in poverty.

And yet ANOTHER response to "how people try to cheat the system" and another deferring of original discussion , , , , , how predictable . . .

Yeah, once again, lefties just want to do good and righties are just bad, cynical people who don't want to help.

I could assume this if you want to go this route:

Right = Assumption that we must do better to protect the system for what it was designed for.

Left = Let's keep people on the dole government dependancy = votes.

Cut the crap, bp. Even you know that is bull.

And we can start the investigations with most of Obama's cabinet picks. So you're right about it not just being the poor that cheat the system.

GOOD! You are learning!!!

Most of all politicians are VERY wealthy! Now how much "tax cheating" in the cabinet equals how much in food stamps on a yearly basis?

It is the problem of PROPORTION that is conveniently ignored when the "welfare bling queens" are talked about.

I said we could start with Obama's cabinet since you want to investigate tax frauds. No where did I imply that we would stop with them.

I'm still making the same point and you are still ignoring it. BP just made it too. Why won't you address it?

Edit: Daschle was an appointee to the Cabinet.

Can you please point out where someone mentioned that we should look the other way on people cheating on taxes? Nobody said this. Again, the discussion was about assistance.

Actually is really isnt crap.

The left have just as many wealthy cheats as the right. The right wants to consolidate their power base by parading out "welfare queens" and harnesses the righteous indignation of the moderates to vote them into office to "clean up the system". The left want to raise those people OUT of poverty to ensure life-long gratitude to the party and keep them voting for Democrats.

Two differnt ways to do the same thing, capture more votes and keep the politicians in power . .

Tos . . I really dont care which way you vote. But I like objectivity when discussing matters . . . takes the emotion out of the equation . .

The discussion was about how many people are reaching the point where they have to fall back on food stamps. Instead of some concern about the hugh increase in these numbers and the obvious fact that more people are disappearing below the laughably low poverty line, the immediate reaction was to hammer them.

Oh ok I see by your statement there a logical jump into rich people cheating on taxes and a war. Got it. Thanks.

And the left marches out the rich boys as examples as well, so it happens on both sides. Same strategy, different actors.

However, you make valid points for sure, but I disagree that the left wants to seriously raise people out of poverty. The left involves itself in class warfare and it can't do that effectively if it doesn't have people in poverty.

That's not true. I think what you misconstrue for "hammering them" is the tough questions behind the numbers that need to be asked. Once again, throwing out a poll and saying "Look at all the poor people" should not be the end of the conversation. We should be asking more questions. I believe I stated all of this earlier.

There was a time that people tried like hell to not accept public assistance. Not so much anymore. It isn't necessarily that there are more "poor" people as there are more people looking to get all they can from the government.

I agree with Perch and it also seems as the needy find the need to pop out more kids than they can afford. If you just pay attention and take note of the people that tend to have 4 or more kids they are the people that probably can't afford one.

Those four kids come from a crap family and have four kids each - now you have 20. That has to be part of the reason so many need assistance.

Cry me a river. The poor people I see don't really seem to be putting in the effort to get out of poverty. Instead they smoke, text with cell phones, drink Red Bull, get tattoos, play Xbox
Anothe gbfan post

It is just an example of the way people spend money when they don't have it. Just open your eyes - you see it all the time. How many poor people have cell phones and not just cheap cell phones - Iphones and Blackberry's.

Come to Wisconsin and take a walk through a casino here. It is a bunch of trash people gambling there money away and most are smoking texting instead of maybe saving money and trying to get out of the poor situation they are in.

It is easier to just stay poor and get handouts.

My favorite . . .

The issue is the loss of available jobs and the support system that . . in theory . . is there to catch down on their luck Americans that want to, but cant, climb out of abject poverty.

You really lost me on your last post with all of my posts? What was your point?

I stand by everything I said. I never said everyone on assistance is cheating the system. I think a lot do and it is wrong.

Tos . . can you imagine a more dedicated voter, than one that was raised out of poverty? That was able to buy a house because of programs put in place by a particular party? Very shrewd politics!

The right uses the term "class warfare" to rail against taxes and win the support of lower income people because everyone beleives in the American Dream that "they too!" can become a millionaire! Also "if" people DO create wealth eventually, they become more right-leaning to "protect their wealth".

Tos . . . my college degree is in political science. This isnt railing on either party . . but just showing you the flaws in the system.

I give up.

Can EVERYONE stipulate that there is inefficencies in the system?

Stipulate means STOP FOCUSING ON THAT ISSUE and move forward with the discussion . .

The question I wanted to have the answer to was why people like you are so keen to clobber welfare freeloaders - even when it's demonstrated that most aren't freeloading at all - when there are far bigger tax drains elsewhere. I agree about the freeloading needing to stop but I really am interested in why you find it so important to address the smaller loss over the bigger one(s).

Tax cheating costs us - yes, us - nearly $300 billion per year., enough to cover a third of the annual deficit. Can you say that of your target miscreants, the welfare queens?

Edit: And that's just income tax, never mind capital gains et al.

When are you going to get it that welfare freeloaders should get clobbered ALONG with tax cheats. I am sick of you putting words into my mouth. This whole discussion was about govt assistance NOT taxes - that is why I was talking about people freeloading on assistance.

If you want me to say that tax cheats are bad and it costs more money than welfare cheats I agree with you. I am not brushing one under the rug and I have no idea where you got that.
