Going out on my own.

So after 15 years with the same shop I have finally decided to make a go of it on my own. I have never run my own business and I am a bit nervous. I am at the point now where I am making more on the weekends than I make all week and I have ZERO benefits with my current employer. I really don't see what I have to lose by trying this.?.?.?

Oddly enough it was my daughter who gave me the final push to do this. She said, " Daddy I am all grown up now and the only person you need to take care of is you. Your 43, what are you waiting for? "

I will be finishing out the month with my current employer while I put together the LLC and insurance issues then I am on my own. Wish me luck!

Good for you. One bit of advice if I may ... assuming you don't have prior experience with the "business end of the business" make sure you get some help from a reputable attorney/tax specialist, if only to try & avoid some of the novice mistakes that can turn things into a financial headache when the state/local/federal governments start to take notice of you.

Good luck with your new endeavor.

All good fortune to you! Will your current employer see you as a major rival for business?

Yes and that has been discussed already. My boss and I have really become friends over the years and I fear I may lose that friendship as I grow my business. Where someone takes their car for repairs is up to them not either one of us but I fear he will not see it that way.

That's what I thought. If you already have your own shop, is it quite close to your employer? What about renting some space further away? I ask because it might be possible to work together cooperatively, passing business to each other if you're not next door.

I dont and wont have a shop at first. I have a pretty nice set up here at the house which is several miles from the shop. When I am ready to take the step of moving into an actual shop I will try to keep it away from his so as not to have that be an issue.

Good luck Brother, I have been my own boss for going on 20 years now. Follow the advice above get a good accountant you can work with let them handle taxes etc. You do your thing.

Best of luck, Tom, in your new venture.

As far as a name, I still prefer doing business w/ people that have their name as at least part of the company's name. I'd never call a place to do work for me like "Royal Flush Plumbing". But that's just me.
