A sign of these economic times?

Last Friday, my sister and all of her co-workers in a large office environment, were notified by the head of the HR deparment that all employees must meet at 3PM for mandatory meeting. No clue was given as to the topic of the meeting, which left everyone to wonder what was going to happen. All morning, employees huddled to exchange ideas about what was going on. Many suspected that layoffs would be announced. Everyone hoped that it wouldn't be them - there had been no indication that things were bad at the company, in spite of the sad state of the overall economy.

The tension could be cut with a knife, as 3PM neared.

Finally, the time came and the meeting began.

The head of HR thanked everyone for coming, and promptly put everyone's nerves at ease by announcing that the company was doing fine and this meeting wasn't about layoffs or anything like that. She went on to announce that "next week, Mark in Accounts Payable will be away on vacation. When he comes back the following week, he will be "Maria".

The rest of the meeting was questions and answers about do's and don'ts regarding employee behavior pertaining to Maria's return.
