westvirginia
I don't have any time to read more than every 10th or so post, but something I heard the other day that I haven't seen here is this: The money for schools is either statutorily or constitutionally set as 2/3 having to come from the state and 1/3 to come from local property taxes. Therefore, if the state cuts funding the locals MUST cut funding to keep the ratio the same. Walker supposedly doesn't want to lay anyone off. If he reduces funding and doesn't kill the bargaining for teachers, then the locals will HAVE to cut jobs because they can't ask anyone to take a pay cut, removal of sick days, or other measures due to the collective bargaining. Again, this was heard on the radio. Don't know how accurate, but it does make sense. It does help explain why teachers are at issue right now and not police/firefighters too. As some have already said ad-naseum, when the unions are bargaining with people they've PAID to put in office, those people have an inherent conflict of interest and absolutely SHOULD NOT be a part of the negotiations. You folks that rail on foreign companies being able to contribute (and rightly so) to political campaigns, can you not see that this is EXACTLY the same thing? bushwacked
Just in his mid-20s, Brian Deschane has no college degree, very little management experience and two drunken-driving convictions. Yet he has landed an $81,500-per-year job in Gov. Scott Walker's administration overseeing environmental and regulatory matters and dozens of employees at the Department of Commerce. Even though Walker says the state is broke and public employees are overpaid, Deschane already has earned a promotion and a 26% pay raise in just two months with the state. How did Deschane score his plum assignment with the Walker team? It's all in the family. His father is Jerry Deschane, executive vice president and longtime lobbyist for the Madison-based Wisconsin Builders Association, which bet big on Walker during last year's governor's race. Walker is all about balancing the budget.
