Bin Laden - Dead

You may, perhaps, wish to punch me in the nuts. I am not ecstatic that he is dead.

I wish that he was captured and spent the rest of his life rotting in a federal prison. Given the choice between instant death or spending the rest of my life in prison, I'd take instant death.

I'm glad he wasn't captured. The circus that would have followed with what to do with him would have further torn this country apart. Instead I feel like his death has united us in a way..even if just for a short while.

I think we're all bummed it didn't happen Sept 12, 1981.

Fixed

But I completely hear what you are saying...

Unfortunately that is how far the trust in our elected officials has fallen. WMDs, Pat Tillman, Lynch (props to SEC for those), the belief that the Prez is a Kenyan socialist commie m00slim, death camps, 9-11 conspiracy talk, etc.

All these havent exactly spawned confidence in our elected officials and their declarations, which makes proof important. A perfect example is that political parties and individuals are clawing for gain off this event. Heck, in this thread the President has been accused of timing the release to mess up that ratings on Celebrity Apprentice  Just another example of how our gubment does not inspire trust.

I am glad that the Ginsuer is dead. I believe that he is dead, and God Bless the troops that have put boots in the sand and sacrificed to bring this Ginsuer to justice after 9 1/2 years.

Well said

No, I'm not saying the operation was timed. I'm saying the announcement was timed. I don't know the actual timeline of all this (but who among us does) but I would guess the precise timing on the announcement was purposeful. Come on man, you know it was.

its been several months since you last doped it up with your rhetoric. Welcome back.

I agree. counterargument is that it would be more damaging for his hero status to have been taken alive. I can see how that might be the case, but considering that alongside everything else, I am glad they just got'r done and shot the motherf*cker in the face.

No problem. I haven't been personally attacked for expressing an opinion lately and I can always count on the guys here.

Well, you were pretty apt at labeling people naive if they didn't agree with yer statement (that many have predictably found to be rather asinine) , so toughen up buttercup.

FWIW, I dont blame you (or anyone else) who wants to see the pics and/or get more details.

I dont think there is anything wrong with being very happy at the news but also having questions and/or wanting more in the way of confirmation. We definitely live in "dont believe everything you see/hear/read/etc" times and I dont blame anyone for having questions or even being skeptical at all. ObL has been pretty "ghost-like" since 9/11 so I dont blame anyone for wanting to see his dead carcass to help with closure or whatever. I dont think its disrespecting the efforts of those who brought him to justice to want to know more or see the results of the effort.

For me, I believe (one way or another) the POS is dead and that is a good thing. He will no longer be able to cause death and destruction or instill fear in this world. I completely agree that it is important to take care not to make the dirtball into a martyr, fuel the fire of the radicals, allow his remains to become any sort of shrine, etc as much as possible, but I also totally see how the quick burial at sea will leave people skeptical. I think him being gone is a good thing, but I think there are plenty of other scumbags and another one will soon rise up in his absence. I think its very fair to distrust parts of the Pakistani govt as there was certainly some playing both sides of the fence. I also think its fair to wonder just how (with SO much attention focused on that part of the world in the hunt for the most wanted individual on the planet) a fortress/compound could go up but not be more closely scrutinized for several years until recent intel pointed in its direction. I mean, it would seem no cave went uninspected nor rock unturned in the desert, but a military-grade compound (that I am reading stuck out like a sore thumb) was constructed in '05 and didnt necessarily raise a red flag? Seems at least curious to me...

Big thanks to all those good people who put their lives at risk to protect us and do the dirty work that allows us to live free every day

I could care less who is sitting in the Oval Office, and while I recognize the probability of retaliation, I could care less about that either. I'm just glad bin Laden is out of the picture and hopefully that can speed up our troops coming home. Hopefully in the future we can handle our reprisals a bit more quickly and a bit more delicately.

something to chew on

Officials say CIA interrogators in secret overseas prisons developed the first strands of information that ultimately led to the killing of Osama bin Laden.

Current and former U.S. officials say that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, provided the nom de guerre of one of bin Laden’s most trusted aides. The CIA got similar information from Mohammed’s successor, Abu Faraj al-Libi. Both were subjected to harsh interrogation tactics inside CIA prisons in Poland and Romania.

I know I shouldn't....for the conspiracy theorists....from the Pakistan news agency:

ISLAMABAD, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Urdu TV channel Geo News quoted Pakistani intelligence officials as saying that the world's most wanted terrorist Osama Bin Laden was killed in a search operation launched by the Pakistani forces after a Pakistani army helicopter was shot down in the wee hours of Monday in Abbotabad, a mountainous town located some 60 kilometers north of Pakistan's capital city of Islamabad.

At about 1:20 a.m. local time a Pakistani helicopter was shot down by unknown people in the Sikandarabad area of Abbotabad. The Pakistani forces launched a search operation in the nearby area and encountered with a group of unknown armed people. A fire exchange followed between the two sides.

When the fire exchange ended, the Pakistani forces arrested some Arab women and kids as well some other armed people who later confessed to the Pakistani forces they were with Osama Bin laden when the fire was exchanged and Bin Laden was killed in the firing.

Local media reported that after the dead body of Bin Laden was recovered, two U.S. helicopter flew to the site and carried away the dead body of Bin Laden.

Initial reports said that at least one was killed and two others were injured in the crash. At least two houses were engulfed by the huge fire caused by the crashed chopper.

Rescue team rushed to the site shortly after the crash was reported and the armed forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation there.

Sources of Xinhua said they tried to enter the area after the incident took place, but no media people were allowed inside.

"No one knows in that helicopter crash Bin Laden was killed," said the sources.

Some White Knuckle Moments for Elite Navy SEALs Team

Another white-knuckle moment – at the end of the operation, Pakistan’s military scrambled fighter jets looking for the US helicopters. Who knows what could have happened if the Pakistani planes had reached the US helicopters -- but they didn’t.

The US team got back to Afghanistan by around 5:45 pm ET.

I was just watching CNN and the Homeland Security guy (Brennan) was asked (paraphrasing) if the orders were to kill ObL on sight and he answered that they would have taken him alive if he hadnt fought back. Also, he was asked how certain they were that it indeed was ObL. He said they were 99.9% if IIRC. Shortly after, some reporter asked why he said 99.9% instead of 100% and Brennan never answered. The Press Secretary guy jumped in at that point answered for him and said (basically) it had to do with the DNA test reliability.

It is interesting to me that the Pres would declare (and that every headline today reads) Bin Laden is DEAD but they werent comfortable saying 100%

That was another question that was asked of Brennan and he said (again, I am paraphrasing) that all US aircraft involved in the assault were completely out of Pakistani air by the time the Pakistanis knew something was going down. He basically made it sound like they were watching the Pakistanis and would have given them a heads up if they saw them mobilizing against the US forces. Since the Pakistanis were slow to react, they didnt tell them until the deed was done and the US forces were out of Dodge is how I understood it explained...
